CHAPTER 2 — The Footage Never Lies

No one spoke.
The only sound inside the dining room was the soft hum of the air conditioner and Victoria's carefully measured breathing.
Emma still stood beside Daniel, unable to process what had just happened.
He had believed her.
Not because she was his wife.
Because something in the room didn't make sense to him.
Daniel squeezed her hand once before letting go.
"Take Emma upstairs."
Every head turned.
One of the housemaids hesitated.
"Sir?"
Daniel repeated himself, his tone calm but absolute.
"Mrs. Ashford will remain a guest in this house until the evidence proves otherwise."
The words landed like stones.
Victoria's younger sister slammed her purse onto the table.
"This is outrageous!"
"Your mother was poisoned!"
"And you're protecting the woman who did it?"
Daniel didn't even look at her.
"I'm protecting the truth."
The room fell silent again.
Emma wanted to speak.
She wanted to explain.
To defend herself.
Instead, Daniel looked at her and quietly said,
"Don't answer another accusation."
She nodded.
There was something different about him tonight.
He wasn't acting like a husband defending his wife.
He was acting like the CEO who had dismantled billion-dollar frauds by finding the one detail everyone else ignored.
Emma followed the maid upstairs.
As she disappeared, Victoria watched her with burning hatred.
She should have been leaving in handcuffs.
Instead...
Daniel had placed her under his protection.
That had never happened before.
Ten minutes later...
The mansion's private security office.
Eight large monitors covered one wall.
Every camera in the estate fed directly into the encrypted server.
Marcus Hill, the head of security, inserted the backup drive.
"Recording loaded, sir."
Daniel removed his jacket and rolled up his sleeves.
"Start one hour before dinner."
Marcus nodded.
The footage began.
The dining room looked peaceful.
Servants arranged plates.
Candles were lit.
Crystal glasses sparkled beneath the chandelier.
Guests gradually entered.
Victoria laughed.
Emma smiled politely.
Nothing unusual.
Daniel watched without blinking.
"Kitchen camera."
The image switched.
Emma filled a crystal pitcher from the filtered water tap.
One maid walked past.
Another carried dessert.
Nothing suspicious.
Marcus frowned.
"It looks normal."
Daniel didn't answer.
"Continue."
The footage advanced.
Emma carried the pitcher toward the dining room.
Again...
Nothing.
Victoria entered moments later.
Still nothing.
Marcus sighed.
"I don't see—"
"Pause."
Daniel leaned closer.
"Rewind."
Five seconds.
Marcus obeyed.
Daniel narrowed his eyes.
"There."
Marcus squinted.
"What?"
"The reflection."
"What reflection?"
Daniel pointed toward the stainless-steel refrigerator.
The polished surface reflected part of the kitchen behind Emma.
Tiny.
Distorted.
Barely noticeable.
But someone appeared behind the pantry door for less than two seconds.
Marcus frowned.
"I didn't even notice that."
"Zoom."
The software enlarged the reflection.
The image became grainy.
Still...
A figure could be seen.
Black sleeves.
White gloves.
Standing completely still.
Watching Emma.
Marcus looked confused.
"Who is that?"
Daniel answered quietly.
"I don't know."
Meanwhile...
Upstairs.
Emma sat alone inside the bedroom.
She hadn't changed clothes.
She hadn't removed her wedding ring.
She simply stared at her shaking hands.
A knock came.
She looked up.
Lily entered carrying tea.
Lily had worked for the Ashford family for twenty-three years.
She had practically raised Daniel.
Unlike the others, she had never treated Emma as an outsider.
Lily placed the tray down gently.
"You should eat."
Emma smiled weakly.
"I don't think I can."
Lily hesitated.
"There is something..."
Emma looked up.
"What?"
"I wasn't sure if it mattered."
Emma immediately leaned forward.
"What did you see?"
Lily lowered her voice.
"Before dinner..."
"I went into the kitchen."
Emma waited.
"I thought someone was inside."
"But when I opened the door..."
"No one was there."
Emma frowned.
"What made you think someone was there?"
Lily's expression changed.
"The smell."
"The smell?"
She nodded.
"A very strong perfume."
Emma's eyes widened.
"What kind?"
"I don't know."
"But..."
Lily searched her memory.
"It smelled expensive."
"Sweet..."
"...with jasmine."
Emma froze.
Jasmine.
She knew exactly who wore jasmine perfume.
Victoria.
No...
That couldn't be right.
Victoria had been greeting guests in the front hall.
Hadn't she?
Unless...
Emma suddenly remembered something.
Just before dinner...
Victoria had disappeared for almost ten minutes.
Everyone assumed she was changing jewelry.
Emma had thought nothing of it.
Until now.
Downstairs...
Daniel continued watching footage.
Kitchen.
Dining room.
Hallway.
Nothing.
Again.
Again.
Again.
Four complete viewings.
Marcus rubbed his eyes.
"I'm sorry, sir."
"I still don't see enough."
Daniel nodded slowly.
"Neither do I."
Marcus blinked.
"Then why are we still watching?"
Daniel stood.
"Because whoever planned this..."
"...made one mistake."
Marcus waited.
Daniel looked toward the frozen image of Emma holding the pitcher.
"People can control what they do."
He paused.
"They rarely control where they look."
Marcus didn't understand.
Daniel replayed the footage again.
This time...
He ignored everyone's hands.
Their movements.
Their expressions.
He watched only their eyes.
Guest after guest.
Servant after servant.
Then...
Victoria entered.
She smiled warmly.
She greeted relatives.
She embraced her sister.
Everything looked perfect.
Except...
For one second...
Her eyes never looked at Emma.
They looked directly...
At the glass.
Daniel leaned forward.
Again.
Replay.
Same result.
Victoria wasn't watching the people.
She was checking one specific glass sitting near the center of the table.
Marcus whispered,
"Almost like..."
Daniel finished the sentence.
"...she already knew which one mattered."
Neither man spoke.
Because if Victoria already knew...
Then she had known before anyone drank.
Across the mansion...
Victoria sat inside her private suite.
Her physician had confirmed she was perfectly stable.
No hospital required.
No lasting damage.
Exactly as planned.
Or almost exactly.
She picked up her phone.
A single encrypted message waited.
Did he believe her?
Victoria hesitated before replying.
Not yet.
Three dots appeared.
Then another message.
Destroy everything connected to the glass.
Victoria's hands trembled.
Too late.
Daniel had secured it.
She quickly typed another reply.
He already has it.
Several seconds passed.
Finally...
One sentence appeared on her screen.
A sentence that made even Victoria's blood run cold.
Then Daniel is closer than we expected.
She stared at the message.
Closer...
To what?
Before she could answer...
The sender deleted the entire conversation.
Every message vanished.
Victoria swallowed hard.
She suddenly realized something terrifying.
She wasn't the only one keeping secrets.
Someone else...
Was playing this game too.
And they were willing to sacrifice anyone—including her—to make sure the truth never surfaced.
At that exact moment...
Downstairs in the security office...
Daniel paused the footage one final time.
Not on Emma.
Not on Victoria.
But on the reflection in the refrigerator.
The mysterious figure.
Marcus frowned.
"The resolution is terrible."
Daniel nodded.
"It is."
He reached for his phone.
"Call Ethan Brooks."
Marcus looked surprised.
"The forensic video analyst?"
Daniel nodded.
"The best in the country."
Marcus hesitated.
"He usually works for federal agencies."
Daniel's expression remained unreadable.
"Tell him Daniel Ashford is asking."
Marcus made the call.
After less than thirty seconds...
His eyes widened.
"He said..."
"What?"
Marcus looked up.
"He said he'll be here within two hours."
Daniel looked back at the frozen reflection.
Barely visible.
Almost invisible.
But not invisible enough.
May you like
Because one shadow hidden inside a reflection...
Was about to expose a conspiracy far bigger than a poisoned glass.
