CHAPTER 9 — THE FIRST CHILD

The document trembled in Ethan’s hands.
He read the same sentence again.
And again.
But the words refused to change.
“SUBJECT ECHO WAS NOT THE FIRST.”
The room felt smaller.
The air felt heavier.
Because for the first time, Ethan understood something terrifying.
He wasn’t the beginning of the story.
He was a chapter in someone else’s story.
Claire stood frozen beside him.
Her eyes never left the document.
Ethan noticed.
“Mom.”
She didn’t respond.
“Mom.”
Slowly, she looked up.
“Who was first?”
The question was simple.
But the fear on Claire’s face answered before her words did.
“I don’t know.”
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“You do.”
Claire closed her eyes.
A tear slipped down her cheek.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“I know.”
Detective Carter took the document from Ethan.
He studied it carefully.
“This is not a normal birth record.”
“What is it?”
He pointed to the bottom.
“Someone altered the legal information.”
Ethan frowned.
“Meaning?”
“Meaning this child was erased.”
Elizabeth whispered:
“Like me.”
Everyone looked at her.
She stared at the paper.
“Like your father.”
The pattern was becoming clear.
People disappeared.
Records changed.
Lives rewritten.
The same thing happened again and again.
The powerful didn’t always kill people.
Sometimes…
They erased them.
“Who is the child?”
Ethan asked.
Nobody answered.
Finally, Claire spoke.
“Her name was Amelia.”
Ethan looked at her.
“Her?”
Claire nodded.
“The first subject.”
Detective Carter looked surprised.
“A girl?”
“Yes.”
Claire looked at the document.
“She was born two years before Ethan.”
Ethan felt confused.
“Where is she?”
Claire looked away.
“I don’t know.”
“But you knew she existed?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
Claire’s voice broke.
“Because Amelia was the reason your father became afraid.”
Twelve years earlier.
Daniel Parker wasn’t searching for money.
He wasn’t searching for power.
He was searching for a missing child.
A child connected to Blackwood Holdings.
Amelia.
The first person involved in Project Echo.
Daniel discovered that Blackwood Holdings had been studying families with rare genetic markers.
Not to cure disease.
Not to help people.
To control inheritance.
Control ownership.
Control history.
Amelia was their first success.
She could access information nobody else could.
Encrypted files.
Hidden accounts.
Old legal systems.
Everything protected by blood.
But when Daniel found her…
He discovered something worse.
She wasn’t the only one being used.
Present day.
Ethan stared at Claire.
“What happened to her?”
Claire looked down.
“She disappeared.”
“Like Dad?”
Claire nodded.
“Yes.”
Suddenly, Ethan understood.
“Richard wasn’t after me.”
Everyone looked at him.
“He was after Amelia.”
Elizabeth frowned.
“Explain.”
Ethan pointed at the documents.
“She disappeared first.”
A pause.
“Then Dad found out about her.”
Another pause.
“Then Dad disappeared.”
He looked at Claire.
“And after that, they came after me.”
Detective Carter slowly nodded.
“He may be right.”
A sound interrupted them.
A notification.
One of the security cameras had activated.
Detective Carter checked the screen.
Everyone gathered around.
The camera showed the mansion entrance.
Someone had left something outside.
A box.
No person.
No vehicle.
Just a box.
Carter and two officers inspected it carefully.
Inside was a small device.
And a photograph.
Ethan picked it up.
His blood ran cold.
It was a picture of a girl.
Around fourteen years old.
Dark hair.
Same eyes as Ethan.
On the back:
“THE FIRST CHILD IS WATCHING.”
Claire immediately sat down.
“No.”
Ethan looked at her.
“You know her.”
Claire’s silence was enough.
“Mom.”
Her voice broke.
“Yes.”
“Who is she?”
Claire whispered:
“Amelia Blackwood.”
The device suddenly turned on.
A girl’s voice filled the room.
Everyone froze.
She sounded young.
Calm.
But tired.
“Ethan.”
He stepped closer.
“How do you know my name?”
The voice continued.
“Because I’ve known about you since before you were born.”
Ethan looked around.
“Where are you?”
No answer.
Instead:
“I know you hate them.”
A pause.
“The lies.”
“The secrets.”
“The people who claimed they were protecting you.”
Ethan’s eyes moved toward his family.
The voice continued.
“But before you judge them…”
A pause.
“Understand something.”
The room became silent.
“Your father didn’t hide the truth from you because he didn’t trust you.”
The girl’s voice softened.
“He hid it because he was trying to keep you alive.”
Ethan grabbed the device.
“Where is my father?”
Silence.
Then:
“He’s closer than you think.”
Everyone froze.
Claire looked terrified.
“What does that mean?”
The girl answered:
“It means Daniel Parker never escaped.”
Ethan felt his heart stop.
“What?”
Amelia continued:
“Your father wasn’t hiding from Richard.”
A pause.
“He was hiding from the people Richard worked for.”
Detective Carter stepped forward.
“Who?”
The voice became quieter.
“The Blackwood Council.”
The name meant nothing to Ethan.
But everyone older in the room reacted.
Elizabeth.
Claire.
Even Detective Carter.
“What is that?”
Ethan asked.
Nobody wanted to answer.
Finally, Elizabeth whispered:
“The people who own the people who own everything.”
That night…
Ethan couldn’t sleep.
Too many truths.
Too many impossible things.
His father was alive.
His grandmother was alive.
A girl named Amelia existed.
And somewhere in the world…
A group of powerful people had controlled his life before he was even born.
At midnight…
Three knocks came from the door.
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
Ethan froze.
Again.
The signal.
But this time…
It wasn’t from his mother.
It wasn’t from a recording.
It was from outside his room.
He slowly opened the door.
Nobody was there.
Only a small envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
A recent photograph.
Not old.
Not damaged.
Fresh.
It showed Daniel Parker.
Alive.
Standing beside Amelia.
On the back were five words:
“COME FIND YOUR FATHER.”
Ethan ran downstairs.
“Mom!”
Everyone woke up.
Claire saw the picture.
And her face changed completely.
Because she recognized the location.
A place she hoped Ethan would never see.
“The old Blackwood facility.”
Detective Carter looked at her.
“You know where it is?”
Claire nodded.
“Yes.”
“Where?”
Her voice shook.
“Under the city.”
Before anyone could move…
Every television in the mansion turned on.
No channel.
No signal.
Just one image.
A man sitting in darkness.
Ethan immediately recognized him.
Richard Parker.
But this time…
He wasn’t smiling.
He looked afraid.
“Ethan.”
The screen flickered.
“You need to listen carefully.”
A pause.
“Because the people you think are trying to destroy you…”
Richard looked directly into the camera.
“Are the only ones who can save you.”
The screen changed.
A second person appeared.
A woman.
Ethan froze.
Because he knew her.
The same woman from the photograph.
Amelia.
She looked directly at him.
And said:
“Ethan…”
May you like
A pause.
“I’m your sister.”
