CHAPTER 8 — THE RECORDING FROM THE DEAD

The room went completely silent.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
The recording device sat on the table.
A small piece of technology carrying the voice of a man who was supposed to have been dead for twelve years.
Daniel Parker.
Ethan’s father.
The man whose death had shaped his entire childhood.
The man whose absence had left a hole nobody could fill.
And now…
His voice was speaking again.
“Ethan…”
The recording crackled.
A deep breath followed.
Then Daniel continued.
“If you are hearing this, then I am probably dead again.”
Ethan froze.
Again.
That word was impossible.
Claire covered her mouth.
Elizabeth closed her eyes.
Detective Carter stared at the device.
Nobody expected that sentence.
Nobody except the people who knew the truth.
Daniel’s voice continued.
“I know you have questions.”
“You want to know why I disappeared.”
“Why your mother lied.”
“Why your grandmother was forced to hide.”
A pause.
“And why Richard Vale tried to erase your existence.”
Ethan’s hands tightened.
Richard.
Again.
Everything always returned to him.
But Daniel’s next words changed everything.
“Richard was never the person who started this.”
Ethan looked at Claire.
She looked terrified.
Not confused.
Terrified.
The same fear she had shown when she saw the hospital window message.
The same fear she had when Richard said the words:
The boy has the key.
“What does he mean?” Ethan whispered.
Nobody answered.
Because Daniel was still talking.
“Ethan, before you judge your mother…”
The recording paused.
A faint sound of breathing.
“Understand something.”
“She did what I asked her to do.”
Claire looked down.
Tears filled her eyes.
Ethan stared.
“What?”
The recording continued.
“Your mother didn’t hide the truth because she didn’t trust you.”
“She hid it because I asked her to.”
Ethan felt something inside him break.
His entire life, he believed Claire kept secrets from him.
But now…
His father was saying she was protecting him.
Still.
Even from beyond the grave.
“When you were born, Ethan…”
Daniel’s voice became heavier.
“You were not just my son.”
A pause.
“You became evidence.”
Ethan frowned.
“Evidence of what?”
Daniel answered.
“That the Blackwood experiment worked.”
Nobody spoke.
Detective Carter immediately stood.
“Experiment?”
Elizabeth looked away.
Claire closed her eyes.
Ethan looked at them.
“Everyone knows.”
His voice became bitter.
“Everyone except me.”
Daniel continued.
“The people behind Blackwood Holdings believed they could control inheritance through blood.”
“They believed certain families carried specific genetic markers that could unlock information hidden for generations.”
“At first, I thought it was insane.”
A pause.
“Then I saw the records.”
“The proof.”
“And I realized they weren’t looking for money.”
“They were looking for a person.”
The recording stopped for three seconds.
Then:
“They were looking for you.”
Ethan stepped backward.
“No.”
Claire reached for him.
“Ethan…”
He pulled away.
“No.”
His voice shook.
“I’m not some experiment.”
Daniel’s voice immediately followed.
“You are not a project.”
“You are not a weapon.”
“You are my son.”
A pause.
“Never let them convince you otherwise.”
For the first time that night…
Ethan felt something besides anger.
Pain.
Because even though Daniel wasn’t there…
He sounded like he was trying to protect him.
Trying to explain.
Trying to be the father he never got the chance to be.
The recording continued.
“But there is something you must know.”
“The key they are searching for is not the inheritance.”
Ethan looked at the metal key on the table.
“It is not the money.”
A pause.
“It is not the company.”
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“The key is information.”
Detective Carter leaned closer.
“What information?”
Daniel answered.
“The names of everyone involved.”
The room became silent.
“Every person who bought power.”
“Every person who erased innocent lives.”
“Every person who believed they could control the truth forever.”
Ethan stared at the device.
“So my father recorded evidence.”
Elizabeth nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
“Where is it?”
Nobody answered.
Ethan looked at them.
“Where is it?”
Claire whispered:
“Hidden.”
“Where?”
Her face changed.
“In the one place nobody would ever search.”
Before Ethan could ask…
The mansion alarm suddenly activated.
Everyone turned.
Detective Carter immediately reached for his weapon.
“What happened?”
An officer’s voice came through the security system.
“Movement detected near the east entrance.”
Elizabeth’s face went pale.
“No…”
Claire looked at her.
“What?”
Elizabeth whispered:
“They found us.”
The power suddenly cut.
Darkness.
Again.
But this time…
Everyone was ready.
Detective Carter positioned himself near Ethan.
Claire grabbed her son’s hand.
Elizabeth moved toward the hidden room.
Then…
Three knocks echoed through the mansion.
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
Ethan froze.
Not because he was afraid.
Because he recognized them.
The same message.
The same signal.
The same warning.
Someone was communicating with him.
A voice came from the darkness.
“Ethan.”
Everyone turned.
A flashlight appeared.
A figure stepped forward.
Not Richard.
Not a stranger.
Someone Ethan knew.
Someone from his childhood.
Someone he trusted.
His old school principal.
Mr. Harrison.
Ethan stared.
“What are you doing here?”
The man smiled sadly.
“I’m sorry.”
Detective Carter raised his weapon.
“Don’t move.”
Mr. Harrison ignored him.
He looked only at Ethan.
“I tried to stop them.”
Ethan frowned.
“Stop who?”
The principal looked around the room.
Then whispered:
“The people who created you.”
Claire stepped forward.
“No.”
Mr. Harrison looked at her.
“You knew this day would come.”
Claire’s face turned pale.
“You were involved.”
The man sighed.
“I was.”
Ethan felt betrayed again.
Another person.
Another lie.
“How?”
Mr. Harrison looked at him.
“Because before I was your principal…”
A pause.
“I was your father’s closest friend.”
The room went silent.
Ethan stared.
“My father trusted you?”
“Yes.”
“Then why are you here?”
Mr. Harrison looked at the key.
“Because Daniel asked me to protect it.”
Ethan picked up the key.
“You know what this opens?”
Mr. Harrison nodded.
“Yes.”
“What?”
His answer was quiet.
“A vault.”
Everyone froze.
“A vault where?”
Mr. Harrison looked toward the old mansion walls.
“Not here.”
A pause.
“Not anywhere you know.”
Then he looked at Ethan.
“It was built beneath the place where your life began.”
Ethan’s face changed.
“The hospital?”
Mr. Harrison shook his head.
“No.”
He whispered:
“Your childhood home.”
At that moment…
Detective Carter’s phone rang.
He answered.
A voice came through.
A voice that made everyone freeze.
Richard.
“You’re all looking in the wrong direction.”
Carter put it on speaker.
Richard continued:
“The vault is not where Daniel hid the truth.”
A pause.
“It’s where he hid the reason Ethan exists.”
Ethan stared.
“Richard…”
Richard laughed softly.
“You still think I’m the villain.”
A pause.
“You’ll understand soon.”
Then his final words came:
“Ask your father why he chose Claire to be your mother.”
The call ended.
Ethan looked at Claire.
She looked devastated.
Because Richard had just revealed something she never wanted Ethan to know.
Something even Daniel had hidden.
A secret about his own birth.
A secret about why Claire…
Was chosen.
That night, Ethan found one final document inside Daniel’s recording case.
A birth certificate.
But not his.
Another child.
Another name.
Another secret.
At the bottom was a signature.
Daniel Parker.
And beneath it:
“Subject ECHO was not the first.”
Ethan stared at the paper.
Because suddenly he understood.
He wasn’t the beginning of the experiment.
He was the continuation.
And somewhere…
There was another person like him.
May you like
Someone who knew the truth before he did.
Someone who had been waiting.
