CHAPTER 3 — THE SECRET CLAIRE HID FOR TWELVE YEARS

The chapel was no longer a place of mourning.
It was a crime scene.
Yellow police tape surrounded the broken coffin.
Flashing lights reflected against the stained-glass windows.
The flowers that once represented love and goodbye were now scattered across the floor.
And in the middle of all of it…
Claire Parker was alive.
But Ethan couldn’t stop shaking.
Not because he was afraid anymore.
Because he was angry.
For twelve years, he believed he knew his mother.
He believed he knew his family.
He believed his father’s death was a tragic accident.
But now everything had changed.
His mother had been buried alive.
His stepfather had tried to murder her.
And his father…
His real father…
Had apparently been killed.
Ethan sat beside Claire in the ambulance.
The paramedics wrapped a blanket around her shoulders.
Her hands were bruised.
Her lips were dry.
Her body was exhausted.
But she kept looking at him.
Like she was afraid he would disappear.
“I’m sorry.”
Those were the first words she said.
Not thank you.
Not I’m scared.
Not I survived.
Only:
“I’m sorry.”
Ethan looked away.
“For what?”
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“For making you carry a truth you were never supposed to know.”
The ambulance doors closed.
Outside, reporters had already gathered.
The story was spreading.
A woman declared dead.
A coffin opened by her own son.
A husband accused of murder.
The world wanted answers.
But Claire knew one thing.
The truth was more dangerous than the headlines.
Because Richard Parker wasn’t acting alone.
She had known that from the beginning.
At the hospital, Detective James Carter entered the room.
He had been assigned to the case immediately.
A woman found alive inside a coffin.
A missing suspect.
A gun fired inside a funeral.
It was already one of the strangest cases of his career.
He looked at Claire.
“Mrs. Parker.”
Claire nodded.
“Detective.”
“I need you to answer some questions.”
She looked toward Ethan.
The detective followed her eyes.
“Is he your son?”
“Yes.”
“And does he know everything?”
Claire went silent.
That answer told him enough.
“No.”
Detective Carter sighed.
“Then we need to talk before he hears it from someone else.”
But Ethan was already listening.
He stood outside the hospital room.
The door was slightly open.
And for the first time in his life…
He was hearing adults discuss his life like it belonged to them.
Just like Richard had done.
Just like everyone else.
He pushed the door open.
“No.”
Claire turned.
“Ethan…”
“No more secrets.”
The room went silent.
His voice shook.
“But everyone keeps saying they’re protecting me.”
He looked at his mother.
“Protecting me from what?”
Claire couldn’t answer.
Ethan stepped closer.
“My dad didn’t die in an accident?”
Silence.
That was the answer.
A twelve-year-old boy didn’t need anyone to explain.
He already understood.
His entire childhood had been built on something false.
Claire looked at Detective Carter.
Then back at Ethan.
Finally, she nodded.
“Your father was named Daniel Parker.”
Ethan swallowed.
“I know.”
“He was not killed in a car accident.”
The words hit harder than he expected.
“How did he die?”
Claire looked down.
“He found something.”
“What?”
“A secret.”
Ethan waited.
Claire took a deep breath.
“Your father discovered that Richard wasn’t the man he claimed to be.”
The name made Ethan freeze.
Richard.
The man who raised him.
The man he called family.
The man who almost buried his mother.
“What was Richard?”
Claire’s hands trembled.
“He wasn’t always Richard Parker.”
Detective Carter leaned forward.
“What does that mean?”
Claire looked at him.
“His real name is Richard Vale.”
The detective’s expression changed.
“Vale?”
Claire nodded.
“Yes.”
Ethan frowned.
“Who is that?”
Claire looked at her son.
“The man your father spent years investigating.”
Twelve years earlier.
Before Ethan was born.
Daniel Parker was an investigative journalist.
Not famous.
Not wealthy.
Just someone who believed powerful people should answer for what they did.
He discovered a financial network connecting businessmen, politicians, and criminals.
At the center of it all…
Was Richard Vale.
A man who changed identities.
A man who erased his past.
A man who built new lives by destroying old ones.
Daniel got too close.
And that was when everything changed.
“Your father found evidence,” Claire continued.
“Evidence against Richard.”
Ethan whispered:
“And Richard killed him.”
Claire didn’t answer immediately.
Because the truth was more complicated.
“I don’t know.”
Ethan looked shocked.
“You don’t know?”
“No.”
Claire’s eyes filled with pain.
“I thought he did.”
A pause.
“But your father left me a warning.”
“What warning?”
Claire looked toward the window.
“He told me if anything happened to him…”
She swallowed.
“Never trust the man who replaces him.”
Ethan felt cold.
“Richard replaced him.”
Claire nodded.
“Yes.”
“He married you?”
“Yes.”
“He became my stepfather?”
“Yes.”
Ethan stepped back.
The betrayal was too big.
Richard wasn’t just a bad man.
He had entered their lives.
He had studied them.
He had become part of their family.
Detective Carter placed a folder on the table.
“We found something in Richard’s vehicle.”
Claire looked at him.
“What?”
“A hidden compartment.”
He opened the folder.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Records.
Ethan looked at them.
And froze.
Because one photograph showed him.
A younger version of himself.
Standing outside school.
Richard watching from a distance.
Another photo.
Claire at work.
Another.
Their house.
Their daily routine.
Ethan’s stomach turned.
“He was watching us.”
Detective Carter nodded.
“For years.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Because she finally understood.
Richard didn’t suddenly become dangerous.
He had been planning.
Waiting.
Preparing.
“What did he want?” Ethan asked.
Nobody answered.
Then Detective Carter said:
“That’s the question we need to answer.”
He placed another document down.
“This was found with the photos.”
Ethan looked.
It was a handwritten note.
The handwriting belonged to Richard.
Only one sentence:
“The boy is the key.”
Ethan looked confused.
“The boy?”
Detective Carter looked at Claire.
“Does Richard have any reason to believe Ethan knows something?”
Claire became pale.
“No.”
But her reaction said otherwise.
Ethan noticed.
“Mom.”
She looked at him.
“What aren’t you telling me?”
Claire looked away.
And that was when Ethan realized.
There was still another secret.
Another thing everyone had hidden.
That night, after Ethan finally fell asleep, Claire sat alone with Detective Carter.
She placed an old envelope on the table.
“I was hoping I would never have to show this.”
The detective opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A man.
A woman.
A newborn baby.
Ethan.
And behind them…
A symbol.
A mark Detective Carter recognized immediately.
His face changed.
“Where did you get this?”
Claire whispered:
“Daniel left it before he died.”
The detective stared.
“Do you know what this means?”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
He looked at the symbol again.
“Yes, you do.”
Claire became silent.
Because she did.
She just didn’t want to say it.
The detective leaned forward.
“Claire.”
Her voice broke.
“My son was never the target.”
A pause.
“He was the reason.”
At that exact moment…
Ethan opened his eyes.
He wasn’t asleep.
He had heard everything.
He walked out of the darkness.
“Reason for what?”
Claire froze.
Her son stood there.
No longer just a child.
A child who had uncovered death.
A child who saved his mother.
A child who now deserved the truth.
Claire looked at him.
And finally said the words she had spent twelve years avoiding.
“Ethan…”
“Your father didn’t die because he discovered Richard.”
A pause.
“He died because he discovered who you really are.”
Ethan stared.
“What does that mean?”
Claire reached for the old photograph.
Her hands trembled.
“Before you were born…”
She looked at him.
“Your father found out you were connected to something much bigger than our family.”
Ethan looked confused.
“Connected to what?”
Claire whispered:
“A fortune.”
A pause.
“A secret.”
A pause.
“And a family that would kill to control it.”
Before Ethan could respond…
The hospital lights flickered.
A nurse screamed from the hallway.
Everyone turned.
A shadow moved past the door.
Detective Carter reached for his weapon.
Too late.
A message had already been left on Claire’s hospital room window.
Written from the outside.
In red paint.
Three words.
“HE KNOWS NOW.”
Ethan stared at the message.
Claire grabbed his hand.
Because she finally understood.
Richard wasn’t running away.
He was preparing.
May you like
And whoever was behind him…
Was coming next.
