CHAPTER 11 — THE THIRD CHILD

The paper fell from Ethan’s hand.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The sentence remained visible.

Only seven words.

But they carried more fear than anything Ethan had discovered before.

“THE THIRD CHILD IS ALREADY WITH YOU.”

Ethan looked around the room.

His eyes moved from person to person.

His mother.

His grandmother.

Detective Carter.

Amelia.

Every person had a reaction.

Fear.

Shock.

Confusion.

But one person looked different.

One person looked like they already knew.

Amelia.

Ethan noticed immediately.

“You know.”

Amelia looked away.

“Know what?”

His voice hardened.

“Who the third child is.”

Silence.

“Amelia.”

She closed her eyes.

Because she knew there was no point hiding anymore.

“Yes.”

The room went completely quiet.

Ethan stepped closer.

“Who?”

Amelia looked at him.

“You’re not ready.”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“People keep saying that.”

A pause.

“But I’m the only one who has been living inside all these lies.”

He pointed at the paper.

“I’m ready.”

Claire stepped forward.

“Ethan, please.”

He turned toward her.

“No.”

His voice broke.

“Mom, I love you.”

A pause.

“But I can’t keep trusting people who refuse to trust me.”

Those words hurt Claire more than anything Richard had done.

Because she realized something.

By trying to protect Ethan from pain…

She had created another kind of pain.

Amelia looked at Claire.

“She deserves the truth.”

Claire whispered:

“I know.”

Amelia looked back at Ethan.

“The third child is not someone who was created after you.”

A pause.

“They were created before you.”

Ethan frowned.

“But you said there were three children.”

“Yes.”

“Then who was the third?”

Amelia’s expression became heavy.

“The first.”

Nobody understood.

Detective Carter stepped forward.

“Explain.”

Amelia looked at the old files.

“The project didn’t begin with me.”

A pause.

“It began with someone else.”

She looked at Ethan.

“Someone who was never supposed to survive.”

Years earlier…

Before Project Echo.

Before Blackwood Holdings became powerful.

Before Daniel discovered the truth.

There was another experiment.

One they erased completely.

A child born with a genetic marker that matched the original Blackwood inheritance system.

The scientists called the child:

Subject Zero.

The first attempt.

The first success.

The first mistake.

Ethan frowned.

“Who was Subject Zero?”

Amelia looked at him.

“We don’t know.”

“You don’t know?”

“No.”

A pause.

“Because Blackwood erased every record.”

Detective Carter looked disturbed.

“Then how do you know they existed?”

Amelia looked at the key.

“Because your father found the file.”

The room became silent.

Ethan remembered the recording.

His father’s voice.

The warnings.

The secrets.

“What did my father say?”

Amelia answered quietly:

“He said Subject Zero was the reason everything started.”

Suddenly, Detective Carter received an alert.

His phone vibrated.

He checked the screen.

Then his expression changed.

“What?”

Claire immediately noticed.

“What happened?”

He showed them.

A message.

From an unknown sender.

A photograph.

Everyone looked.

It was a security image.

A person walking through the underground Blackwood facility.

The image was blurry.

But the face was visible.

Ethan froze.

Because he knew that face.

The person in the photograph…

Was Detective Carter.

Nobody spoke.

Carter immediately stepped back.

“No.”

Ethan stared at him.

“What is this?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect us to believe that?”

Carter looked genuinely shocked.

“I’ve never been there.”

Amelia looked at the image carefully.

“This is a trap.”

Everyone looked at her.

“What?”

She pointed.

“The timestamp.”

Detective Carter looked.

His face changed.

“It’s impossible.”

“Why?”

“Because this photograph was taken fourteen years ago.”

Ethan looked confused.

“Before I was born?”

Carter nodded.

“Yes.”

Amelia’s voice became quiet.

“That means someone knew him before he became a detective.”

The room changed.

The trust everyone had placed in Carter suddenly disappeared.

Not because they believed he was guilty.

Because they realized the enemy had been planning for years.

Decades.

Carter looked at Ethan.

“I swear to you.”

Ethan remained silent.

“I don’t know why my image is there.”

A pause.

“But I know one thing.”

“What?”

“Someone is trying to make us turn against each other.”

A sound interrupted them.

A phone ringing.

Not Carter’s.

Not Ethan’s.

Claire’s.

Everyone froze.

She looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

Her hands trembled.

“No.”

Ethan noticed.

“Mom?”

She didn’t answer.

The phone kept ringing.

Finally, Ethan took it.

He answered.

Silence.

Then a voice.

A child’s voice.

A girl.

“Hello, Ethan.”

Everyone froze.

Because the voice was familiar.

Ethan whispered:

“Who is this?”

The girl answered:

“You don’t remember me.”

A pause.

“But I remember you.”

Ethan looked at Amelia.

Amelia looked terrified.

“No…”

The girl continued:

“Your father told me to wait.”

Ethan’s heart raced.

“Wait for what?”

The girl answered:

“For the day you found out the truth.”

Claire grabbed the phone.

“Who are you?”

The girl didn’t answer.

Instead, she said:

“Mom.”

Claire froze.

Because nobody had called her that voice in years.

Nobody except…

A child.

The phone slipped from Claire’s hand.

Ethan looked at her.

“Mom?”

She was crying.

Because she recognized the voice.

The voice belonged to someone she thought was gone forever.

Someone who shouldn’t exist.

Someone whose name was never written in any file.

The girl spoke again through the phone.

“Claire.”

A pause.

“I’m sorry.”

Claire covered her mouth.

“No…”

The girl continued:

“I didn’t want to hide anymore.”

Ethan stared.

“Who are you?”

A long silence.

Then:

“I’m Lily.”

Everyone froze.

Ethan looked confused.

“Lily?”

Amelia whispered:

“That’s impossible.”

Claire looked destroyed.

Because she knew exactly who Lily was.

Twelve years earlier.

Before Ethan was born.

Claire had a sister.

A baby girl.

Born prematurely.

A child doctors said wouldn’t survive.

A child Claire was told died.

But now…

That child was alive.

Ethan looked at his mother.

“You had another daughter?”

Claire cried.

“No.”

A pause.

“I had a sister.”

She looked at the phone.

“And they took her.”

The voice continued.

“I was Subject Zero.”

The room went silent.

Ethan felt the world shift.

The missing first child.

The beginning of Project Echo.

The person everyone believed disappeared.

Was not a stranger.

Was family.

Amelia looked at Ethan.

“Now you understand.”

Ethan shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at the phone.

“How old are you?”

Silence.

Then Lily answered:

“Same age as you.”

Ethan froze.

Same age.

Another child.

Another life.

Another version of him.

A twin.

Claire whispered:

“They told me you died.”

Lily’s voice became emotional.

“They told me you forgot me.”

Claire broke down.

“No.”

Lily continued:

“They made me believe I was never loved.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

The truth was finally complete.

The third child wasn’t someone standing beside him.

The third child was someone who had been stolen from his family before he was even born.

His twin sister.

Then Lily said something that changed everything.

“Ethan…”

“Yes?”

“Dad is with me.”

Everyone froze.

Ethan’s heart stopped.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“But he’s not safe.”

The line crackled.

Then Lily whispered:

“Because the person who created us…”

“Is coming back.”

The call ended.

Immediately.

The lights in the mansion flickered.

Three knocks echoed again.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

But this time…

The sound didn’t come from outside.

It came from inside the wall.

Everyone turned.

Detective Carter slowly approached the hidden panel.

He opened it.

Behind the wall was a secret room.

Inside…

Was a chair.

A table.

Old documents.

And a photograph.

A photograph of three children.

Ethan.

Amelia.

Lily.

Standing together.

Taken years ago.

Before Ethan ever knew they existed.

On the back of the photograph was written:

“THE THREE KEYS MUST NEVER MEET.”

Ethan stared.

Because the people who controlled Project Echo had spent twelve years keeping three children apart.

And now…

May you like

For the first time…

All three knew the truth.
