CHAPTER 17 — THE FOURTH CHILD

The entire facility went silent.

The young man stood beneath the flickering lights.

No fear.

No confusion.

No hesitation.

Like he had been waiting his entire life for this moment.

Ethan stared at him.

Because the resemblance was impossible.

The same eyes.

The same expression.

The same calmness when facing danger.

It felt like looking at a reflection that belonged to someone else.

“Brother?”

The word echoed in Ethan’s mind.

He looked at Daniel.

Then Claire.

Then Amelia.

Nobody spoke.

Because nobody had an answer.

Except one person.

Alexander Blackwood.

He smiled.

“Finally.”

A pause.

“All four pieces are together.”

Ethan’s voice was quiet.

“Who is he?”

Alexander looked proud.

“This is Noah.”

The young man stepped forward.

“The fourth subject.”

Amelia immediately stepped back.

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

Her face was filled with fear.

Not because Noah looked dangerous.

Because she recognized him.

“You know him?”

Ethan asked.

Amelia didn’t answer.

“Noah…”

The young man looked at her.

“You remember me.”

The room became tense.

Ethan looked between them.

“How?”

Amelia swallowed.

“Because he was there.”

“Where?”

“During the first tests.”

Noah walked closer.

His expression remained calm.

“I was the one who watched them take you away.”

Amelia’s eyes filled with anger.

“You watched?”

Noah looked down.

“I was a child.”

A pause.

“I didn’t understand.”

Ethan looked at Alexander.

“You created four children?”

Alexander shook his head.

“No.”

A pause.

“I created a system.”

He looked at Noah.

“And he was the final result.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Alexander.”

For the first time…

His voice carried fear.

“Tell him the truth.”

Alexander smiled.

“Why?”

A pause.

“You spent years hiding it.”

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“What truth?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Because he knew this moment would come.

“The four children were never meant to be equal.”

The room became colder.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel looked at Noah.

“Amelia was created to access information.”

A pause.

“Lily was created to connect the bloodlines.”

A pause.

“You were created to expose the system.”

Then he looked at Noah.

“And he…”

Daniel stopped.

Ethan finished the sentence.

“He was created to control it.”

Nobody spoke.

Because Ethan was right.

Alexander smiled.

“Exactly.”

He looked at Noah.

“The perfect subject.”

Noah remained expressionless.

“The child without emotional weakness.”

Ethan stared.

“What?”

Alexander continued:

“You all failed because you developed attachments.”

He pointed toward Amelia.

“Love.”

Toward Lily.

“Fear.”

Toward Ethan.

“Compassion.”

A pause.

“But Noah…”

He smiled.

“Was designed without those limitations.”

Ethan looked at Noah.

“Is that true?”

For the first time…

Noah hesitated.

Only slightly.

But Ethan saw it.

“You feel something.”

Noah looked away.

Alexander noticed.

And his smile disappeared.

“You were not supposed to question.”

Noah looked at him.

“I am not a machine.”

The words shocked everyone.

Especially Alexander.

Because they were the first emotional words Noah had spoken.

Alexander’s expression hardened.

“You were created for a purpose.”

Noah answered:

“So were all of us.”

A pause.

“But we became people.”

Ethan felt something change.

Noah wasn’t the enemy.

He was another victim.

Another child who had been told his worth depended on what he could do.

Suddenly, the system activated.

The countdown changed.

FINAL SELECTION: 01 HOUR

Detective Carter looked at the screen.

“One hour.”

Daniel nodded.

“The system will choose.”

Ethan looked at him.

“And if it chooses?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Only one subject will gain full control.”

A pause.

“The others will be locked out permanently.”

Amelia looked at Ethan.

“So this is what Alexander wanted.”

A competition.

A final battle.

A winner.

Alexander’s voice echoed.

“You finally understand.”

The walls opened.

Four separate rooms appeared.

Each marked with a number.

001

002

003

004

“No.”

Claire stepped forward.

“They’re children.”

Alexander looked at her.

“They are heirs.”

Daniel looked furious.

“They are human beings.”

Alexander smiled.

“That is the weakness that destroyed you.”

The four doors opened.

Inside each room was a chair.

A scanner.

A screen.

A choice.

Ethan looked at the rooms.

“What happens if we refuse?”

Alexander answered:

“Then nobody receives control.”

A pause.

“And everything you have ever known disappears.”

The screens showed the truth.

The hidden accounts.

The company.

The evidence.

Everything.

If the system shut down…

Millions of records would vanish.

Criminals would escape.

The truth would disappear forever.

Alexander had designed the perfect trap.

Choose power.

Or lose justice.

Ethan looked at Amelia.

She shook her head.

“No.”

“What?”

“We don’t play his game.”

Noah looked at her.

“You don’t understand.”

Amelia looked at him.

“I understand better than anyone.”

A pause.

“They wanted us to fight.”

She looked at Ethan.

“But they never expected us to choose each other.”

Alexander laughed.

“You think love defeats systems?”

Ethan looked at him.

“No.”

A pause.

“I think people do.”

The countdown continued.

00:45

Ethan walked toward the center of the room.

Everyone watched.

“What are you doing?”

Alexander asked.

Ethan held the metal key.

“The thing you never understood.”

He looked at the four scanners.

“This was never a competition.”

He placed the key in the center.

The system reacted.

Warning lights flashed.

ERROR

UNAUTHORIZED ACTION

MULTIPLE SUBJECTS DETECTED

Alexander’s expression changed.

“What did you do?”

Ethan smiled.

“I stopped choosing.”

The system began processing.

Four identities.

Four subjects.

Four lives.

Not one.

All.

Daniel stared.

“Ethan…”

“What?”

He looked at his son.

“You found the flaw.”

Alexander stepped closer.

“No.”

His voice became angry.

“You cannot rewrite decades of design.”

Ethan looked at him.

“Maybe not.”

A pause.

“But we can stop obeying it.”

The system displayed a new message.

REDEFINING PURPOSE

Everyone froze.

The original programming was changing.

The final selection was being canceled.

Alexander became furious.

“No!”

For the first time…

The powerful man looked afraid.

“You don’t understand what you’re destroying.”

Ethan looked at him.

“No.”

A pause.

“I understand exactly.”

Suddenly…

The facility shook violently.

Smoke filled the room.

The walls cracked.

A security failure began.

Detective Carter shouted:

“We need to leave!”

But Alexander didn’t move.

He stared at Ethan.

“You think you won.”

A pause.

“You haven’t seen the final secret.”

The screens changed one last time.

A hidden file appeared.

PROJECT ECHO — TRUE ORIGIN

The file opened.

Everyone looked.

And their faces changed.

Daniel whispered:

“No…”

Claire grabbed Ethan’s hand.

“What?”

Daniel stared at the screen.

“Project Echo…”

A pause.

“It wasn’t created by Alexander.”

Everyone froze.

“Then who?”

Daniel looked at the final image.

A woman.

An old photograph.

A woman Ethan had never seen.

But the name underneath made Elizabeth collapse.

EMILY PARKER

Ethan stared.

“Who is she?”

Daniel whispered:

“Your great-grandmother.”

The screen revealed the final truth:

Project Echo existed before the Blackwoods.

Before the Parkers.

Before every secret.

And the person who started everything…

Was not a villain.

Was family.

The final message appeared:

“SUBJECT ZERO WAS NOT VICTORIA.”

“SUBJECT ZERO WAS EMILY PARKER.”

Everyone turned.

Because the entire history they believed…

Was a lie.

And somewhere in the darkness beneath the facility…

A woman’s voice whispered:

“Ethan…”

May you like

A pause.

“You finally found me.”
