CHAPTER 4 — THE BOY WHO INHERITED A SECRET

The message on the hospital window remained there for hours.
Three words.
Written in red.
“HE KNOWS NOW.”
Nobody could remove them.
Not because they were difficult to clean.
Because nobody wanted to.
Everyone in that room understood what it meant.
Someone had been inside the hospital.
Someone had watched Claire.
Someone had watched Ethan.
And they wanted them to know they were still being watched.
Detective James Carter immediately ordered the hospital locked down.
Two officers guarded the hallway.
Security cameras were checked.
Every entrance was searched.
But the person who left the message was already gone.
Like a ghost.
Like Richard Parker.
Or whoever Richard truly was.
Ethan sat beside his mother’s bed, staring at the window.
He had spent twelve years believing his life was ordinary.
A normal house.
A normal family.
A normal childhood.
Now he wondered if anything had ever been normal.
“Mom?”
Claire looked at him.
“Yes?”
“Who am I?”
The question broke her heart.
Because she knew Ethan wasn’t asking about his name.
He was asking about his entire existence.
Claire reached for his hand.
“You’re my son.”
“That’s not what I mean.”
His voice became quieter.
“I mean… why would someone kill Dad because of me?”
Claire looked away.
Because she had spent years trying to protect him from this exact moment.
But hiding the truth had only delayed it.
It had never stopped it.
Before Claire could answer, Detective Carter entered.
He carried a thick file.
“We found something.”
Ethan immediately looked up.
“What?”
The detective placed the file on the table.
“Richard Parker’s real identity.”
Claire became tense.
“What did you find?”
Detective Carter opened the first page.
“Richard Vale.”
A photograph appeared.
The man Ethan knew as his stepfather looked younger.
Different.
But unmistakably the same person.
“He changed his name seventeen years ago,” Carter explained.
“Before he met your mother.”
Ethan frowned.
“So he planned everything?”
The detective didn’t answer immediately.
“That’s what we need to prove.”
The file contained years of information.
Fake identities.
Suspicious business deals.
Missing people.
Unsolved cases.
Richard Vale wasn’t just a man hiding a secret.
He was a man who built his entire life around secrets.
But one detail stood out.
A connection that appeared again and again.
A company.
A name.
Blackwood Holdings.
Ethan looked at his mother.
“Do you know them?”
Claire’s face changed.
Only for a second.
But Ethan saw it.
“You do.”
Claire sighed.
“Yes.”
“Who are they?”
She looked at Detective Carter.
Then at Ethan.
“They are the reason your father died.”
Twelve years earlier.
Daniel Parker was not searching for Richard Vale at first.
He was investigating Blackwood Holdings.
A company that seemed perfect from the outside.
Luxury buildings.
Charity events.
Political connections.
But behind the success was something darker.
Money laundering.
Illegal contracts.
People disappearing after asking too many questions.
Daniel followed the trail.
And eventually found something impossible.
A hidden account.
A private document.
A list of names.
At the bottom of that list…
Was Ethan Parker.
Present day.
Ethan stared.
“My name was on a list?”
Claire nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
She looked devastated.
“Because before you were born, your father discovered something.”
“What?”
Claire took a deep breath.
“He discovered that you weren’t supposed to exist.”
The words felt like a punch.
Ethan stepped back.
“What?”
“No.”
Claire immediately reached for him.
“That’s not what I mean.”
She held his hand.
“I mean powerful people had already decided what your life would become before you were born.”
Detective Carter looked confused.
“Claire, explain.”
She hesitated.
Then finally opened the secret she had protected for twelve years.
“When I was pregnant with Ethan…”
She looked at her son.
“Daniel and I discovered that my pregnancy was connected to an inheritance.”
Ethan frowned.
“An inheritance?”
Claire nodded.
“Your biological grandfather left something behind.”
“Who was my grandfather?”
Claire looked down.
“His name was William Parker.”
Detective Carter frowned.
“Parker?”
Claire nodded.
“Yes.”
The detective checked his notes.
“Is there any relation to Blackwood Holdings?”
Claire answered quietly:
“He founded it.”
The room went silent.
Ethan felt dizzy.
His grandfather created a company worth billions.
His father investigated it.
His stepfather tried to kill his mother.
And somehow…
He was connected to all of it.
“What happened to him?”
Claire whispered:
“He died.”
“When?”
“Before you were born.”
“How?”
Claire looked at the detective.
“That’s the problem.”
Detective Carter understood.
“It was never investigated.”
Ethan looked at his mother.
“You knew all this?”
Claire nodded.
“I knew some of it.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because I wanted you to have a childhood.”
A pause.
“I wanted you to be Ethan.”
She touched his face.
“Not a name on someone’s list.”
That night, Ethan couldn’t sleep.
Too many questions.
Too many memories.
Every moment of his childhood felt different now.
The day Richard taught him how to ride a bike.
The night Richard helped him with homework.
The times Richard told him:
“Family means protecting each other.”
Every memory felt poisoned.
Because Ethan didn’t know which parts were real.
Around 2:00 a.m., Ethan heard something.
A sound.
From the hallway.
Three knocks.
He froze.
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
His heart stopped.
Not because he was scared.
Because he knew that pattern.
He opened his bedroom door.
Nobody was there.
Only darkness.
Then he saw something on the floor.
An envelope.
His name was written on it.
ETHAN PARKER
His hands trembled as he opened it.
Inside was an old photograph.
A photograph of his father.
Daniel.
Standing beside a man Ethan had never seen before.
On the back was written:
“Your father trusted the wrong person.”
Ethan immediately ran to Claire.
“Mom.”
She woke up.
“What happened?”
He showed her the photograph.
The moment she saw it…
She stopped breathing.
Because she recognized the man beside Daniel.
“No…”
Ethan looked at her.
“Who is he?”
Claire’s face turned pale.
“He was supposed to be dead.”
Detective Carter arrived minutes later.
He examined the photograph carefully.
“Do you know him?”
Claire nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Her voice shook.
“Thomas Blackwood.”
The detective froze.
“Blackwood?”
Claire nodded.
“The man who owned the company before it became Blackwood Holdings.”
Ethan stared.
“But you said he died.”
Claire looked at the photograph.
“That’s what everyone believed.”
The detective turned the photograph over.
A second message had appeared beneath the first.
Not written in the same handwriting.
Fresh ink.
New words.
“THE BOY HAS THE KEY.”
Ethan looked confused.
“What key?”
Nobody answered.
Because Claire knew.
The secret she buried for twelve years.
The thing Daniel died protecting.
The thing Richard tried to take.
The thing every powerful person wanted.
Was not money.
Was not an inheritance.
It was something Ethan carried with him since birth.
Claire slowly reached into her bag.
From a hidden pocket, she removed a small metal object.
A key.
Old.
Silver.
With a strange symbol carved into it.
Ethan stared.
“You had that the whole time?”
Claire nodded.
“Your father gave it to me the night before he died.”
“Why?”
Her eyes filled with fear.
“Because he knew someone would come for it.”
Ethan touched the key.
The moment his fingers closed around it…
The hospital lights went out.
Again.
The same darkness.
The same silence.
Then a voice came from the hallway.
A voice Ethan recognized.
A voice that made Claire’s blood run cold.
Richard.
“You should have listened, Claire.”
Everyone froze.
Because Richard Parker was standing outside the room.
Alive.
Smiling.
And he wasn’t alone.
Behind him stood three armed men.
Richard looked directly at Ethan.
“You have no idea what your father left you.”
A pause.
“But tonight…”
May you like
He smiled.
“I’m going to take it back.”
