CHAPTER 7 — THE FATHER WHO WAS NEVER DEAD

The letter slipped from Ethan’s fingers.
For several seconds, he couldn’t move.
The words on the page blurred.
Not because he couldn’t read them.
Because his mind refused to accept them.
“Your mother was never the person Richard wanted to kill.”
“You were.”
Ethan stared at the paper.
His hands began shaking.
“No…”
The word escaped his mouth.
“No.”
Elizabeth immediately stepped toward him.
“Ethan—”
“Don’t.”
His voice cracked.
Everyone stopped.
Because Ethan wasn’t angry anymore.
He was terrified.
“My whole life…”
He looked at the letter.
“My whole life people have been trying to protect me from the truth.”
A pause.
“But nobody told me what the truth was.”
Elizabeth’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because we were afraid.”
Ethan looked at her.
“You were afraid of a twelve-year-old?”
“No.”
Her voice softened.
“We were afraid of what would happen if the wrong people knew who you were.”
The mansion remained silent.
The gunshot from moments earlier still echoed in everyone’s minds.
Daniel Parker was alive.
Richard was gone.
And now Ethan had a letter from a father he believed was dead.
A father who claimed Ethan had been the target all along.
Detective Carter carefully picked up the letter.
He examined it.
“This handwriting…”
Elizabeth looked at him.
“You recognize it?”
The detective nodded slowly.
“I saw Daniel’s files years ago.”
Ethan looked at him.
“You knew my father?”
Carter hesitated.
“Not personally.”
A pause.
“But I investigated his disappearance.”
Ethan froze.
“You did?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t you find him?”
The detective looked down.
“Because someone wanted him to stay missing.”
Ethan looked back at the letter.
“What does he mean?”
Elizabeth answered quietly.
“Your father discovered something about you before you were born.”
“What?”
She walked toward the old study.
Then opened a hidden compartment beneath the desk.
Inside were dozens of files.
Medical reports.
Research papers.
Photographs.
Ethan stared.
“How long have these been here?”
“Years.”
“Why didn’t you show me?”
Elizabeth looked at him.
“Because Daniel made me promise.”
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“Another promise.”
Elizabeth opened the first file.
Inside was a picture of a baby.
Ethan.
But something was written beside it.
Project Echo — Subject E.P.
Ethan frowned.
“What is that?”
Elizabeth sat down.
“This is why your father disappeared.”
Years earlier…
Daniel and Claire were expecting a child.
They believed they were building a normal family.
Then Daniel discovered something hidden inside Blackwood Holdings.
A private research program.
A project funded by powerful people.
A project involving genetics, inheritance, and identity.
At first, Daniel thought it was about money.
He was wrong.
The project was about bloodlines.
Certain families believed some people were born with the ability to unlock hidden assets, encrypted information, and legal inheritances.
They believed blood was a key.
And Ethan…
Was born carrying that key.
Present day.
Ethan stared at his own baby photograph.
“That’s impossible.”
Elizabeth shook her head.
“No.”
She looked at him.
“It is the reason people have spent your entire life watching you.”
Ethan felt sick.
“Watching me?”
“Yes.”
“Richard?”
“Yes.”
“Who else?”
Elizabeth didn’t answer.
And Ethan knew.
There were more.
Detective Carter opened another file.
“This isn’t medical research.”
Everyone looked at him.
He pointed to the documents.
“This is legal.”
“What do you mean?”
“These records show Ethan is the final beneficiary of several hidden trusts.”
Ethan frowned.
“Trusts?”
Elizabeth nodded.
“Your grandfather created them.”
“How much?”
Nobody answered.
Ethan looked at Detective Carter.
“How much money?”
The detective swallowed.
“Billions.”
The room became silent.
Ethan laughed.
A small, broken laugh.
“So that’s it.”
Claire’s voice appeared behind him.
Everyone turned.
She had arrived with officers.
She looked exhausted.
But alive.
“That’s not it.”
Ethan looked at his mother.
“Isn’t it?”
He pointed at the files.
“Everyone wanted me because of money.”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
“Then why?”
She walked closer.
“Because the money was only part of it.”
“What’s the other part?”
Claire looked at Elizabeth.
Then at Detective Carter.
Finally, she said:
“You are the only person who can expose the people who created it.”
Before Ethan could respond…
A phone began ringing.
Everyone froze.
Because it wasn’t their phone.
It was Richard’s.
The device he dropped during the escape.
Detective Carter picked it up.
Unknown caller.
He answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then a voice came through.
A woman’s voice.
Calm.
Cold.
“Did he read the letter?”
Everyone looked at Ethan.
Detective Carter put the call on speaker.
“Who is this?”
The woman ignored him.
“Ethan Parker.”
Ethan stepped closer.
“Who are you?”
A pause.
Then:
“Someone who has been protecting you longer than your family has.”
Claire’s face changed.
She recognized the voice.
“No…”
The woman continued:
“Your father told you Richard was the danger.”
A pause.
“He was wrong.”
Ethan looked confused.
“What are you talking about?”
The woman answered:
“Richard was only a soldier.”
Silence.
“The person who ordered everything is still alive.”
Detective Carter immediately traced the call.
But the signal was moving.
Multiple locations.
Impossible.
The woman continued:
“Ethan, listen carefully.”
His grip tightened around the phone.
“Your father will tell you he saved you.”
A pause.
“Your grandmother will tell you she protected you.”
Another pause.
“Your mother will tell you she loved you.”
Ethan looked at Claire.
The woman’s final words came quietly.
“But none of them will tell you what they did to create you.”
The call ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Ethan looked at his family.
The people who had protected him.
The people who had lied to him.
And asked the question nobody wanted to answer.
“What did you do?”
Nobody answered.
Because they all knew.
The woman on the phone was right.
There was another secret.
A bigger one.
A darker one.
Later that night…
Claire sat beside Ethan.
For the first time, she looked like someone who had no more strength to hide.
“I need to tell you something.”
Ethan looked at her.
“What?”
She took a deep breath.
“Before you were born…”
A pause.
“Your father and I made a choice.”
Ethan felt his stomach tighten.
“What choice?”
Claire looked away.
“We agreed to something.”
“With who?”
Her voice became barely a whisper.
“With Blackwood Holdings.”
Ethan froze.
“Why?”
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because they told us you would die if we refused.”
The room went silent.
Ethan stood.
“You knew?”
“I was afraid.”
“You knew people were watching me?”
“Yes.”
“You knew there was something wrong?”
“Yes.”
“And you still let me grow up without knowing?”
Claire started crying.
“Because I wanted you to have a normal life.”
Ethan shook his head.
“No.”
His voice broke.
“You wanted me to have the illusion of one.”
Outside the window…
A shadow watched the mansion.
Someone holding a photograph.
A photograph of Ethan.
On the back was written:
“SUBJECT ECHO HAS AWAKENED.”
The person smiled.
Because Ethan had finally discovered the truth.
But they knew something he didn’t.
The truth was not going to save him.
It was going to put a target on his back.
The next morning…
A package arrived at the mansion.
No sender.
No address.
Only Ethan’s name.
Inside was a small recording device.
And a message.
“PRESS PLAY IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY YOUR FATHER DISAPPEARED.”
Ethan looked at everyone.
Then pressed the button.
A voice began playing.
A voice he knew.
Daniel Parker.
His father.
But the message was not old.
It was recorded recently.

And the first sentence made everyone freeze:
“Ethan, if you are hearing this, then I am probably dead again.”
