CHAPTER 12 — THE CHILDREN THEY TRIED TO ERASE

The photograph lay on the table.
Three children.
Three faces.
Three lives connected by a secret nobody was supposed to discover.
Ethan.
Amelia.
Lily.
The three keys.
The three subjects of Project Echo.
For years, powerful people had spent billions trying to separate them.
And now…
They were finally together.
Even if only through a photograph.
Ethan stared at the picture.
His hands trembled.
“That’s impossible.”
Claire looked at him.
“Ethan…”
“No.”
He pointed at the photograph.
“This was taken before I knew Amelia existed.”
A pause.
“And Lily…”
His voice became quieter.
“Lily was supposed to be dead.”
Nobody answered.
Because that was the truth everyone had been forced to accept.
Until now.
Detective Carter carefully picked up the photograph.
“This isn’t old.”
Everyone looked at him.
“What?”
He examined the edges.
“The picture was printed recently.”
Ethan frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Carter looked toward the hidden room.
“It means someone wanted us to find it.”
The secret room was unlike any place they had discovered before.
Richard’s hidden rooms were about control.
William Parker’s files were about secrets.
But this place…
This place felt like a warning.
The walls were covered with drawings.
Children’s handwriting.
Medical records.
Photographs.
Three names appeared everywhere.
Ethan Parker.
Amelia Blackwood.
Lily Parker.
Amelia walked slowly around the room.
Her face changed.
She recognized something.
“This was mine.”
Everyone turned.
“What?”
She touched a small drawing pinned to the wall.
A picture of three children holding hands.
“I drew this.”
Ethan looked confused.
“When?”
Amelia’s eyes filled with sadness.
“When I was five.”
A pause.
“I don’t remember drawing it.”
Claire stepped closer.
“Why?”
Amelia looked at her.
“Because they erased parts of my memory.”
The room became silent.
“They did the same to Lily.”
Ethan looked at the files.
“They erased memories?”
Amelia nodded.
“Not completely.”
A pause.
“Only the ones that could lead us back here.”
Detective Carter opened one of the files.
Inside were medical reports.
His expression changed.
“Ethan.”
He looked serious.
“What?”
“These aren’t experiments.”
Everyone looked at him.
“These are protection records.”
Nobody understood.
Carter continued.
“The project was changed.”
“When?”
“After Daniel discovered the truth.”
Ethan looked at his father’s name.
“What truth?”
Carter read the document.
“Project Echo was not created to control children.”
A pause.
“It was created to protect them.”
Everyone froze.
Amelia shook her head.
“No.”
She stepped back.
“That’s not true.”
“Why?”
“Because they hurt us.”
Her voice broke.
“They locked me in rooms.”
“They took blood.”
“They tested me.”
A tear fell.
“That isn’t protection.”
Nobody argued.
Because she was right.
Even if the original purpose was different…
The people who controlled it turned protection into cruelty.
Ethan looked at the files.
“Who changed it?”
A name appeared repeatedly.
A name nobody wanted to say.
Finally, Elizabeth whispered:
“Victoria Blackwood.”
The room became colder.
The woman who created the Blackwood Council.
The woman who appeared at the mansion.
The woman who wanted the key.
She wasn’t just searching for Ethan.
She had been controlling Project Echo from the beginning.
“But why?”
Ethan asked.
“Why create us?”
Elizabeth answered quietly:
“Because of your grandfather.”
Ethan frowned.
“My grandfather?”
“Yes.”
She opened another file.
Inside was an old agreement.
Signed by:
William Parker.
Thomas Blackwood.
And a third person.
A woman.
Ethan recognized the name.
Victoria Blackwood.
The agreement was dated forty years earlier.
The title:
THE BLACKWOOD SUCCESSION PROGRAM
Ethan read the first line.
“The future of both families depends on the next generation.”
He looked up.
“What does this mean?”
Elizabeth sighed.
“It means your families were connected long before you were born.”
Decades earlier…
The Parker and Blackwood families built an empire together.
But when Thomas Blackwood died, the partnership collapsed.
Two families fought over control.
Instead of ending the war…
They created a solution.
A child who could unite both bloodlines.
A person with access to both inheritances.
Both histories.
Both secrets.
Ethan stared.
“So I was created to fix a family argument?”
Claire immediately shook her head.
“No.”
She held his face.
“You were born because we loved you.”
A pause.
“Never let them make you believe otherwise.”
Before Ethan could respond…
The mansion security alarm activated.
Again.
But this time…
The warning was different.
Every screen in the house turned on.
A countdown appeared.
10:00
09:59
09:58
Everyone froze.
“What is that?”
Detective Carter moved toward the control panel.
“Someone hacked the system.”
The countdown continued.
09:45
A video appeared.
Victoria Blackwood.
She sat in a dark room.
Calm.
Perfectly composed.
As if she wasn’t threatening an entire house.
“Hello, Ethan.”
Nobody spoke.
Victoria smiled.
“I know you have questions.”
A pause.
“And I know you believe I am the villain.”
Ethan stepped closer.
“You tried to take me.”
Victoria shook her head.
“No.”
She looked directly into the camera.
“I tried to save you.”
Everyone reacted.
Claire laughed bitterly.
“Save him?”
Victoria ignored her.
“Ethan, you have been told lies your entire life.”
A pause.
“Your mother lied.”
“Your father lied.”
“Your grandmother lied.”
The screen changed.
Images appeared.
Daniel.
Claire.
Elizabeth.
Files.
Documents.
“Everyone protected their own version of the truth.”
Ethan stared.
“What do you want?”
Victoria smiled.
“The key.”
“No.”
“You don’t understand.”
The countdown continued.
07:32
“If the three keys come together…”
A pause.
“Every secret hidden by your families will be released.”
Amelia stepped forward.
“You’re afraid.”
Victoria looked at her.
For the first time…
Her expression changed.
“You.”
A pause.
“You should have stayed forgotten.”
Amelia’s face hardened.
“I survived.”
Victoria smiled.
“Barely.”
Ethan noticed something.
Victoria wasn’t angry.
She was afraid.
The woman who controlled everything was afraid of one thing.
The truth.
“Where is my father?”
Ethan asked.
Victoria became silent.
That silence told him everything.
She knew.
“You have him.”
A pause.
“Don’t you?”
Victoria looked away.
Then answered:
“Yes.”
Ethan’s heart stopped.
“Where?”
Victoria leaned closer to the camera.
“Where the first child was born.”
The countdown continued.
05:00
Claire suddenly grabbed Ethan’s arm.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
She was crying.
“Where?”
Victoria smiled.
“Beneath St. Joseph’s Hospital.”
Claire went pale.
Because she knew that place.
That was where Ethan was born.
That was where Lily disappeared.
That was where Daniel vanished.
Victoria’s final words echoed:
“You have one hour.”
A pause.
“Bring me the three keys.”
The screen went black.
Nobody moved.
Then Ethan looked at Amelia.
“Can you find her?”
Amelia nodded.
“Yes.”
Claire looked terrified.
“Ethan, no.”
He turned.
For the first time, his voice wasn’t that of a scared child.
It was determined.
“She took my father.”
A pause.
“She took my sister.”
Another pause.
“She took years from all of us.”
He picked up the key.
“But she made one mistake.”
Everyone looked at him.
Ethan stared at the hidden room.
“She thought we were three separate children.”
A pause.
“But we’re not.”
He looked at Amelia.
Then at the phone where Lily’s voice had come from.
Then at his mother.
“We’re a family.”
The countdown reached:
03:00
Far beneath the city…
In an abandoned underground facility…
Daniel Parker opened his eyes.
He was sitting in a locked room.
Across from him…
Was Lily.
His daughter.
Alive.
And beside them…
Was Richard Parker.
Not as a captor.
As a prisoner.
Daniel looked at him.
“You know they’re coming.”
Richard nodded.
“Yes.”
“Then you know what happens next.”
Richard looked down.
For the first time in twelve years…
He looked defeated.
“I was wrong.”
Daniel stared.
Richard whispered:
“I thought controlling the truth would save us.”
A pause.
“But all I did was create the same monsters I hated.”
A door opened.
A figure entered.
Victoria Blackwood.
She smiled.
“Time is almost up.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You lost.”
Victoria laughed.
“No.”
She looked at Lily.
“I finally have all three.”
But she didn’t know…
Ethan was already coming.
May you like
And this time…
He wasn’t coming alone.
