CHAPTER 18 — THE WOMAN BEFORE THEM ALL

The facility trembled.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Warning alarms screamed through the underground halls.

But nobody moved.

Nobody cared about the collapsing walls.

Because the screen had just revealed the impossible truth.

SUBJECT ZERO WAS NOT VICTORIA.

SUBJECT ZERO WAS EMILY PARKER.

Ethan stared at the photograph.

The woman in the image looked peaceful.

Kind.

Nothing like the monsters he had imagined.

Nothing like the people who controlled Project Echo.

She looked like someone’s grandmother.

Someone’s family.

Not the beginning of a decades-long nightmare.

“Who is Emily Parker?”

Ethan whispered.

Nobody answered.

Because everyone was looking at Elizabeth.

Elizabeth’s face had lost all color.

She slowly stepped toward the screen.

“No…”

Her voice broke.

“No, that can’t be true.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Mom.”

Elizabeth shook her head.

“I was told she died.”

A pause.

“She was supposed to be gone.”

Ethan looked between them.

“Who was she?”

Daniel took a deep breath.

“Your great-grandmother.”

A pause.

“My grandmother.”

Ethan frowned.

“But you said Alexander started everything.”

Daniel looked at the screen.

“I was wrong.”

The truth began to unfold.

Before Blackwood Holdings.

Before the Council.

Before the experiments.

There was Emily Parker.

A scientist.

A brilliant woman who believed information could change the world.

She was the first person to discover something hidden inside human genetics.

Not a superpower.

Not magic.

Something much simpler.

A connection.

A way certain families preserved knowledge.

Through blood.

Through memory.

Through inherited information.

“She wasn’t trying to create weapons,” Daniel explained.

Ethan looked at him.

“Then what was she trying to do?”

Daniel answered:

“Protect people.”

Emily Parker discovered that powerful families had spent generations hiding information.

Illegal deals.

Stolen wealth.

Corruption.

Entire histories rewritten.

She believed the truth should belong to everyone.

So she created a system.

A system that could preserve the truth beyond one person’s lifetime.

Project Echo.

Amelia looked confused.

“Then how did it become this?”

Daniel looked at the destroyed facility.

“Because people changed it.”

Power always found a way.

Alexander saw opportunity.

The Blackwood family saw control.

The Council saw ownership.

A project created to protect the truth became a weapon to control it.

Ethan looked at Noah.

“And Victoria?”

Daniel sighed.

“Victoria was the first person created after Alexander corrupted the project.”

A pause.

“She wasn’t the beginning.”

“She was the first victim.”

Noah stared at the screen.

For the first time, his emotionless expression disappeared.

“She never knew.”

Everyone looked at him.

“What?”

Noah looked down.

“She never knew she was created from someone else’s mistake.”

Ethan noticed something.

Noah wasn’t defending Victoria.

He was mourning her.

Because he understood her.

The system suddenly activated again.

A voice echoed:

“ORIGINAL SUBJECT ACCESS REQUIRED.”

Everyone froze.

Detective Carter looked around.

“Original subject?”

Daniel looked terrified.

“No.”

Ethan turned.

“What?”

Daniel whispered:

“The system is looking for Emily.”

Then…

The lights in the deepest part of the facility turned on.

A door opened.

Slowly.

A woman stepped out.

Everyone froze.

Because the woman looked old.

Very old.

But alive.

Ethan couldn’t move.

The woman looked directly at him.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Ethan.”

Nobody spoke.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Emily.”

The woman smiled sadly.

“Hello, Daniel.”

The room became silent.

Because the woman who started everything…

Was standing in front of them.

Alive.

Ethan stared.

“You’re my great-grandmother?”

Emily looked at him.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“And I am sorry.”

Those two words shocked him.

Not an explanation.

Not a justification.

An apology.

“You’re sorry?”

Emily nodded.

“For everything my discovery caused.”

Ethan looked around.

“All these years.”

A pause.

“All these people.”

He looked at Amelia.

“Victoria.”

He looked at Lily.

“Me.”

His voice cracked.

“This happened because of you?”

Emily closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Nobody expected her honesty.

Not even Daniel.

“You’re admitting it?”

Emily nodded.

“I should have destroyed the research.”

A pause.

“But I believed truth alone could save people.”

She looked at Ethan.

“I forgot that people with power will always try to own the truth.”

Amelia stepped forward.

“You knew about us?”

Emily looked at her.

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you save us?”

The question hurt.

Because Amelia wasn’t asking as an investigator.

She was asking as a child.

A child who had waited her entire life.

Emily looked down.

“Because I failed.”

A pause.

“I was too late.”

Ethan looked at her.

“What happened to you?”

Emily walked toward the old computer.

“Alexander locked me away.”

Everyone froze.

“Alexander?”

“Yes.”

“He said the world needed him.”

A pause.

“He believed I was too weak because I cared about people.”

The truth was finally complete.

Alexander did not create Project Echo.

He stole it.

Victoria did not create the system.

She inherited it.

Richard did not begin the war.

He was another person consumed by it.

And Emily…

Was the person who started everything because she wanted to help.

Suddenly, a gunshot echoed.

Everyone turned.

A guard collapsed near the entrance.

Another group entered.

Armed.

Leading them was…

Victoria.

But she looked different.

Not powerful.

Not calm.

Desperate.

“You found her.”

Everyone froze.

Ethan stepped forward.

“Victoria.”

She looked at Emily.

“I spent my whole life searching for the person who ruined me.”

A pause.

“And it was you.”

Emily didn’t run.

She didn’t defend herself.

She simply nodded.

“Yes.”

Victoria laughed.

“You admit it?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“I created the world that hurt you.”

For a moment…

Victoria had no answer.

Because she expected excuses.

Not responsibility.

Then she raised her weapon.

Everyone reacted.

Daniel moved.

Ethan stepped forward.

But Emily stopped them.

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

Emily faced Victoria.

“If you need someone to blame…”

A pause.

“Blame me.”

Victoria’s hand shook.

“You don’t understand.”

Emily whispered:

“I understand.”

A pause.

“I was your mother before they took that from you.”

The words hit Victoria harder than any weapon.

Her face changed.

“You…”

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“I looked for you.”

A pause.

“Every year.”

Victoria lowered the gun slightly.

Because for the first time in her life…

Someone told her she was wanted.

Then Alexander’s voice came through the speakers.

Everyone froze.

A laugh.

Cold.

Controlled.

“You always were sentimental, Emily.”

The screens turned on.

Alexander.

Alive.

Watching.

Emily looked up.

“You’re dead.”

Alexander smiled.

“No.”

A pause.

“I simply waited.”

Daniel looked terrified.

“You weren’t controlling the system.”

Alexander smiled.

“No.”

A pause.

“I was waiting for it to bring everyone together.”

Ethan felt cold.

“What are you talking about?”

Alexander answered:

“The four subjects.”

A pause.

“The original creator.”

A pause.

“The complete family.”

The entire facility locked down.

Doors slammed shut.

A final message appeared.

PROJECT ECHO FINAL PHASE INITIATED

Alexander’s voice echoed:

“For decades, everyone believed the goal was control.”

A pause.

“They were wrong.”

The screen displayed one final file.

PROJECT ECHO: HUMAN SUCCESSION

Alexander smiled.

“The goal was never to control the children.”

A pause.

“It was to replace humanity.”

Everyone froze.

Because the final secret was not about inheritance.

Not about money.

Not about power.

It was about something far more dangerous.

A plan to create a new generation.

Designed.

Selected.

Controlled.

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“Dad…”

Daniel whispered:

“I’m sorry.”

“Why?”

Because Daniel looked at the four children.

And said:

“Because you were never the final experiment.”

May you like

A pause.

“The world was.”
