CHAPTER 5 — THE MAN WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

The hospital hallway became a battlefield of silence.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Because the man standing at the entrance was supposed to be gone.

Richard Parker.

The man who had tried to bury Claire alive.

The man who disappeared before police could arrest him.

The man Ethan believed he would never see again.

Was standing right there.

Alive.

Smiling.

And holding all the power.

Detective Carter slowly reached for his weapon.

Richard noticed.

And immediately raised his hand.

One of the men behind him lifted a gun.

“Don’t.”

The detective stopped.

Richard smiled.

“That’s the problem with people like you.”

He looked at Carter.

“You always think the badge makes you untouchable.”

Carter stared at him.

“You’re surrounded.”

Richard laughed softly.

“No.”

He looked around the room.

“I’m exactly where I need to be.”

His eyes moved to Ethan.

“The boy has the key.”

Ethan stepped backward.

His fingers tightened around the small metal key.

He suddenly understood.

Everything.

The coffin.

The fake funeral.

His mother being hunted.

His father’s death.

None of it was random.

It all led here.

To this moment.

To him.

“What is this key?”

Richard’s smile faded.

“You really don’t know, do you?”

Ethan said nothing.

Richard looked almost disappointed.

“Daniel never told you.”

“Don’t talk about my father.”

Richard’s expression changed.

For the first time…

Ethan saw something beneath the cruelty.

Hatred.

Pure hatred.

“Your father was a fool.”

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

“He tried to expose people much more powerful than himself.”

“And you killed him?”

The question hung in the air.

Richard didn’t answer.

That silence was worse.

Claire pushed herself upright.

The nurses tried to stop her.

But she ignored them.

“Richard.”

Everyone turned.

Her voice was weak.

But full of anger.

“You failed.”

Richard looked at her.

“You’re still alive.”

“Yes.”

She looked at Ethan.

“Because our son believed me.”

Something changed in Richard’s face.

The word.

Our son.

It reminded him of something.

Something he hated.

Family.

Love.

Things he never understood.

“You always believed love would protect you.”

Claire stared.

“And you always believed fear would protect you.”

Richard smiled.

“Fear works.”

Claire shook her head.

“Until someone stops being afraid.”

She looked at Ethan.

“And he did.”

Richard stepped into the room.

The armed men followed.

“Give me the key.”

Ethan didn’t move.

“No.”

Richard sighed.

“Ethan.”

His voice became softer.

Almost like the stepfather he pretended to be.

“I raised you.”

Ethan looked at him.

“No.”

A pause.

“You watched me grow.”

Richard froze.

The words hit.

Because Ethan was right.

Richard had been present.

But he was never truly family.

“You know nothing about me.”

Ethan’s voice shook.

“You never loved me.”

For a moment…

Richard looked hurt.

Only for a moment.

Then the mask returned.

“You’re just like your father.”

Ethan replied:

“I hope I am.”

Suddenly, one of the armed men moved.

Not toward Ethan.

Toward Richard.

“Enough.”

Everyone turned.

The man lowered his weapon slightly.

Richard’s expression changed.

“What are you doing?”

The man removed his mask.

Detective Carter recognized him immediately.

“Officer Mason?”

The room exploded into confusion.

The armed man was not one of Richard’s people.

He was undercover.

Carter moved instantly.

“NOW!”

Everything happened at once.

Gunshots.

Shouting.

People running.

The lights flickered.

Claire pulled Ethan down.

Detective Carter tackled one attacker.

The hospital room became chaos.

But Richard was ready.

He grabbed Ethan.

The key fell from his hand.

“Ethan!”

Claire screamed.

Richard dragged him toward the hallway.

“Let go of him!”

Carter fired.

Richard disappeared around the corner.

Ethan fought.

He kicked.

He screamed.

But Richard was stronger.

“You don’t understand.”

Richard dragged him through the emergency exit.

“Your father left you something.”

Ethan struggled.

“I don’t want anything from you.”

Richard stopped.

For a second.

Then whispered:

“You should.”

He looked at Ethan.

“Because what your father discovered could destroy half the world.”

Outside the hospital…

A black vehicle waited.

Richard pushed Ethan inside.

The driver immediately accelerated.

The city disappeared behind them.

Ethan looked back through the window.

He saw his mother.

Standing in the hospital entrance.

Crying.

Unable to reach him.

Inside the vehicle, Richard sat across from Ethan.

For the first time, he looked exhausted.

Not powerful.

Not confident.

Just tired.

“You have questions.”

Ethan glared.

“You kidnapped me.”

Richard nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then why are you explaining?”

Richard looked out the window.

“Because soon, you’ll hate me.”

A pause.

“And I want you to know why.”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“There is no reason.”

Richard looked at him.

“There is always a reason.”

The vehicle drove outside the city.

Toward an old abandoned property.

A place Ethan had never seen.

But Richard knew it well.

“This was your grandfather’s house.”

Ethan looked outside.

The building was huge.

Old.

Destroyed.

“What happened here?”

Richard opened the door.

“Your family happened.”

Inside the mansion…

Everything was covered in dust.

But one room was untouched.

A study.

Richard opened the door.

On the wall were photographs.

Ethan’s grandfather.

His father.

And a woman Ethan had never seen.

Richard pointed.

“That woman changed everything.”

Ethan looked closer.

“Who is she?”

Richard answered:

“Your grandmother.”

Ethan froze.

“My grandmother?”

“Yes.”

“But she died before I was born.”

Richard smiled.

“That’s what you were told.”

Ethan stared at the photograph.

The woman looked familiar.

The same eyes.

The same expression.

A feeling he couldn’t explain.

“Why bring me here?”

Richard walked toward a locked cabinet.

“Because your father hid the truth here.”

He opened it.

Inside was a file.

Old.

Thick.

And marked with a warning:

PROJECT ECHO

Ethan frowned.

“What is that?”

Richard looked at him.

“The reason your father died.”

Richard placed the file on the table.

“You think this is about money.”

He opened the first page.

“You think it’s about an inheritance.”

Another page.

“You’re wrong.”

He pointed.

“This is about a discovery.”

Ethan looked down.

The file contained medical records.

Research.

Names.

Dates.

And one name appeared repeatedly.

His own.

Ethan Parker.

His heart began racing.

“Why is my name here?”

Richard didn’t answer.

Instead, he opened the final page.

A document signed by Daniel Parker.

Ethan’s father.

The last sentence made Ethan stop breathing.

“If anything happens to me, protect Ethan. He is not the key because of what he owns.”

A pause.

“He is the key because of what he is.”

Ethan looked up.

“What does that mean?”

Richard stared at him.

For the first time…

He looked afraid.

“Your father discovered something about you.”

“What?”

Richard whispered:

“You were never supposed to survive.”

At that exact moment…

The mansion doors opened.

Someone walked inside.

Richard turned.

And his face changed.

Because the person standing there was the last person he expected.

A woman.

Older.

Powerful.

Calm.

Ethan looked at her.

He didn’t know her.

But Richard did.

“No…”

Richard whispered.

“You’re dead.”

The woman smiled.

“No, Richard.”

She looked at Ethan.

“I was waiting.”

A pause.

“Waiting until he was old enough to learn the truth.”

Ethan stared.

“Who are you?”

The woman stepped closer.

May you like

And said:

“I’m your grandmother.”
