CHAPTER 16 — THE MAN WHO CREATED EVERYTHING

The old man’s face remained on every screen.

For several seconds…

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone in that room understood the same thing.

They had finally reached the beginning.

Not the beginning of Project Echo.

Not the beginning of the Blackwood Council.

The beginning of the person who created all of it.

Daniel stared at the screen.

His face had lost all color.

“No…”

Ethan looked at him.

“You know him.”

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Dad.”

Slowly, Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“His name is Alexander Blackwood.”

The name meant nothing to Ethan.

But everyone else reacted.

Elizabeth stepped backward.

Claire covered her mouth.

Even Richard, standing silently near the damaged control room, looked terrified.

“Impossible.”

Richard whispered.

Daniel looked at him.

“You thought he was dead too.”

Richard swallowed.

“Yes.”

The old man on the screen smiled.

Not warmly.

Not kindly.

Like someone watching a game finally reach the final move.

“Hello, Ethan.”

The sound of his voice echoed through the facility.

“You have grown exactly as predicted.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“You know me?”

Alexander smiled.

“I knew you before your parents did.”

The words made Ethan sick.

Because that was the same sentence everyone who controlled his life seemed to share.

They knew him before he knew himself.

They had planned around him.

They had built a world around him.

Without asking him.

“Who are you?”

Ethan demanded.

Alexander looked amused.

“A reasonable question.”

A pause.

“I am your great-grandfather.”

Silence.

Nobody expected that.

Ethan looked at Elizabeth.

She slowly nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Elizabeth looked ashamed.

“Because I thought he was gone.”

Alexander laughed.

“Everyone always thinks that.”

The screen changed.

Old photographs appeared.

A young Alexander Blackwood.

William Parker.

Thomas Blackwood.

The original founders.

The beginning of the empire.

But then another photograph appeared.

A photograph of a laboratory.

A photograph of children.

A photograph of Victoria.

Alexander’s voice continued.

“Your families always misunderstood Project Echo.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“You turned it into something evil.”

Alexander smiled.

“No.”

A pause.

“I improved it.”

Ethan clenched his fists.

“You experimented on children.”

Alexander looked at him.

“I studied potential.”

“They were children.”

“They were descendants.”

A pause.

“Your family always becomes emotional when discussing legacy.”

Amelia looked disgusted.

“You never saw us as people.”

Alexander looked at her.

“No.”

A pause.

“I saw you as possibilities.”

Those words hurt more than anger.

Because Alexander wasn’t pretending.

He truly believed he had done nothing wrong.

Daniel stepped toward the screen.

“You created Victoria.”

“Yes.”

“You destroyed her life.”

Alexander tilted his head.

“Destroyed?”

A pause.

“I gave her purpose.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“She needed love.”

Alexander looked confused.

“Love?”

He almost laughed.

“That is exactly why humans fail.”

Ethan stared at the screen.

“You really believe this?”

Alexander looked directly at him.

“I believe history belongs to those capable of controlling it.”

The facility shook.

The system began activating.

FINAL SELECTION: 08 HOURS

Detective Carter looked at the control panel.

“He has access.”

Daniel nodded.

“Of course.”

“Can we stop him?”

Daniel looked at the three children.

“Only they can.”

Everyone turned.

Ethan.

Amelia.

Lily.

The three keys.

The three people Alexander spent decades creating.

Alexander continued:

“I spent my life searching for perfection.”

A pause.

“I believed power came from money.”

Another pause.

“Then I discovered something greater.”

He looked at Ethan.

“Information.”

The screens displayed thousands of files.

Government secrets.

Corporate crimes.

Hidden agreements.

Every piece of information the Blackwood Council had collected.

Alexander had created a system that could expose or destroy anyone.

Ethan understood.

“The key doesn’t control the inheritance.”

Alexander smiled.

“Finally.”

A pause.

“It controls the truth.”

Claire stepped forward.

“Why?”

Alexander looked at her.

“Why what?”

“Why create children for this?”

Alexander’s expression changed slightly.

Almost annoyed.

“Because adults lie.”

A pause.

“Children can be shaped.”

Amelia looked away.

The words hurt.

Because that was exactly what happened to her.

Richard suddenly laughed.

Everyone turned.

It wasn’t a happy laugh.

It was broken.

“You know what’s funny?”

Alexander looked at him.

Richard continued:

“I spent years trying to become powerful enough to defeat you.”

A pause.

“And I never realized…”

He looked around.

“I was just another experiment.”

Alexander ignored him.

“You were useful.”

Richard’s face changed.

“Useful?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“You proved something important.”

Richard stared.

“What?”

Alexander answered:

“People will destroy themselves for the illusion of belonging.”

Richard became silent.

Because those words described his entire life.

He wanted acceptance.

A place.

A family.

And Alexander used that weakness.

Ethan looked at Alexander.

“You made everyone suffer.”

Alexander shook his head.

“No.”

A pause.

“They chose.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“You’re wrong.”

Alexander raised an eyebrow.

“Am I?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“Because people don’t choose pain when someone gives them no other option.”

For the first time…

Alexander looked slightly surprised.

Not angry.

Interested.

“You sound like Daniel.”

Ethan answered:

“I’m his son.”

The screen flickered.

Then Alexander revealed something unexpected.

A file.

A hidden file.

ETHAN PARKER — ORIGINAL DESIGN

Ethan froze.

“What is that?”

Alexander smiled.

“Your true purpose.”

Daniel immediately reacted.

“No.”

Ethan looked at him.

“What?”

Daniel looked terrified.

“Don’t open that.”

Alexander smiled.

“Of course he should.”

A pause.

“He deserves to know.”

The file opened.

Inside were documents from before Ethan’s birth.

Before Claire became pregnant.

Before Daniel knew anything.

A plan.

A genetic blueprint.

A timeline.

And at the bottom…

A signature.

Daniel Parker.

Ethan stared.

His father’s signature.

“No.”

Daniel looked broken.

“Ethan…”

“You signed this?”

Silence.

“You knew?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

The betrayal hit harder than anything before.

Because this wasn’t Richard.

This wasn’t Victoria.

This was his father.

The man who said he protected him.

The man he just found.

Ethan stepped back.

“You created me?”

Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.

“No.”

A pause.

“I tried to save you.”

“Then why is your name on it?”

Alexander answered for him.

“Because your father agreed to Project Echo before he knew what it really was.”

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“What did you agree to?”

Daniel couldn’t speak.

Finally:

“I agreed to create a child who could expose them.”

A pause.

“But when I discovered what they planned…”

His voice broke.

“I tried to destroy everything.”

The facility went silent.

Ethan didn’t know what to feel.

Anger.

Pain.

Confusion.

Everything.

Then Lily’s voice came through the speakers.

“Ethan.”

Everyone froze.

She appeared on the screen beside Alexander.

Alive.

But different.

Calm.

Too calm.

Ethan stepped forward.

“Lily?”

She looked at him.

“I found out something.”

“What?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“The third child…”

A pause.

“Was never me.”

Everyone froze.

Amelia looked confused.

“What are you talking about?”

Lily looked toward Alexander.

“He lied.”

Alexander’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Lily continued:

“The system was never designed for three children.”

A pause.

“It was designed for four.”

The room became silent.

Ethan felt cold.

“Four?”

Lily nodded.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“And the fourth child…”

She looked directly at Ethan.

“Is the one Alexander was protecting.”

The lights went out.

A new message appeared.

Not from Alexander.

Not from the system.

A new name.

A name nobody recognized.

SUBJECT FOUR — ACTIVE

Alexander smiled.

Because for the first time…

He looked victorious.

“Now…”

He whispered.

“The real heir arrives.”

The doors at the end of the facility opened.

Slowly.

A figure stepped out.

A young man.

Around Ethan’s age.

Same eyes.

Same blood.

Same mark.

Ethan stared.

Because the stranger looked exactly like him.

The boy smiled.

May you like

And said:

“Hello, brother.”
