CHAPTER 8 — The Man Who Was Never Dead

The ballroom erupted into chaos.

"Alive?"

"That's impossible!"

"They declared him dead thirty-four years ago!"

Reporters shouted questions over one another. Camera flashes lit the room like lightning.

Arthur Ashford never moved.

His eyes remained fixed on the single word that had shattered everything he believed about his life.

STATUS UPDATED: ALIVE

His voice barely escaped his lips.

"...No."

Michael Lawson slowly closed the file.

"I'm afraid it's true."

Arthur shook his head.

"People don't come back after thirty-four years."

"No."

Michael answered quietly.

"They don't."

"Unless someone made sure they never came home."

Celeste stared at the old photograph.

The man in the Navy uniform looked no older than thirty.

Strong jaw.

Dark eyes.

A faint smile.

The resemblance was undeniable.

For the first time in her life, she understood why strangers had occasionally told her she "didn't look like an Ashford."

She had always assumed they meant her personality.

Now she realized...

They meant her face.

She whispered,

"My father..."

The words felt unfamiliar.

Almost foreign.

Admiral Reed looked at her with sympathy.

"I've searched military archives for twenty-five years."

"I never found his name."

Michael nodded.

"Because it wasn't in the Navy's records."

"It belonged somewhere else."

He turned another page.

Across the top was a faded government seal.

Not Navy.

Not Army.

Not Air Force.

No military branch anyone recognized.

Only four letters.

D.S.A.

Arthur frowned.

"What is DSA?"

The retired intelligence officer who had dropped his glass finally spoke.

His voice trembled.

"It no longer exists."

Every head turned.

Michael nodded slowly.

"Tell them."

The old man hesitated.

Then sighed.

"It stood for..."

Directorate of Strategic Activities.

"It was a covert intelligence organization created during the Cold War."

"No public oversight."

"No official acknowledgment."

"If an operative disappeared..."

"The government denied they ever existed."

The ballroom fell silent.

Arthur whispered,

"And Daniel Carter..."

"...worked for them."

"Yes."

The old officer lowered his head.

"He was one of our best."

Victoria laughed nervously.

"This is absurd."

"It sounds like a spy movie."

No one responded.

Because no one was laughing.

Michael removed another document.

A mission report.

Date:

Thirty-Four Years Earlier.

Operation:

PHOENIX

Objective:

Prevent the illegal sale of next-generation naval encryption systems to foreign buyers.

Commander:

Daniel James Carter

Mission Result:

Compromised

Agent Status:

Presumed Captured

Arthur frowned.

"Captured?"

Michael nodded.

"They believed he died."

"But they never found a body."

Celeste slowly turned the page.

The next document contained a single handwritten sentence.

She froze.

The handwriting...

It looked hauntingly familiar.

Not because she had seen it before.

Because it resembled her own.

The same sharp angles.

The same narrow lettering.

The note read:

Tell Eleanor I never stopped coming home.

A tear rolled down Celeste's cheek.

She hadn't cried once that evening.

Not when Victoria humiliated her.

Not when the scars were exposed.

Not even when she learned Arthur wasn't her biological father.

But this...

This was different.

A man she'd never met...

Had spent thirty-four years trying to return.

Arthur quietly stepped beside her.

"I didn't know."

She nodded.

"I know."

"I swear..."

"I know."

His shoulders sagged.

Those two words hurt more than blame.

Admiral Reed studied the remaining pages.

"These files were updated six months ago."

Michael nodded.

"Yes."

"Why now?"

"Because they finally found him."

The room became still again.

Arthur looked up.

"They found Daniel Carter?"

Michael answered.

"No."

"He found them."

The room gasped.

Another page appeared.

Recent intelligence summary.

Date: Six Months Earlier.

An unidentified elderly male entered the U.S. Embassy in Reykjavík, Iceland.

The screen showed a surveillance photograph.

An old man.

Gray beard.

Weathered face.

Walking with a cane.

No one would have recognized him.

Except...

Celeste.

She stared at his eyes.

The same eyes she saw in the mirror every morning.

The report continued.

Subject identified himself as:

Commander Daniel James Carter

The embassy staff initially believed he suffered from dementia.

Until...

He recited classified naval encryption codes that had never been declassified.

Codes only one missing operative could possibly know.

DNA testing followed.

Result:

99.997% Match

Identity confirmed.

Arthur whispered,

"My God..."

Michael continued.

"Daniel had been held for decades."

The ballroom turned toward him.

"He escaped."

"Three years ago."

"But severe injuries and memory loss delayed his return."

"He spent nearly two years recovering under another identity."

"When his memory finally returned..."

"The first thing he asked was..."

Michael's voice softened.

"Where is Eleanor?"

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Celeste closed her eyes.

He had come home.

Too late.

Her mother had been gone for twelve years.

Admiral Reed looked down at the final page.

Then frowned.

"This report is incomplete."

"It ends abruptly."

Michael nodded.

"There's one page missing."

"Missing?"

"Removed before the file reached me."

"What was on it?"

Michael answered honestly.

"I don't know."

Suddenly—

A young intelligence officer hurried into the ballroom.

"Admiral!"

Reed turned immediately.

"What is it?"

The officer whispered into his ear.

Reed's expression changed instantly.

"What?"

He grabbed the tablet.

Read the message twice.

Then looked directly at Celeste.

"He's here."

She frowned.

"Who?"

Reed answered quietly.

"Daniel Carter."

The ballroom froze.

Arthur looked toward the entrance.

"So... he's alive."

Reed nodded once.

"He landed in Harbor City forty minutes ago."

Celeste's heartbeat accelerated.

After thirty-four years...

The man she had never known...

Was finally here.

She took one hesitant step toward the ballroom doors.

Then another.

But before she could reach them—

The doors burst open.

Two federal agents rushed inside.

Their faces were tense.

"Commander Ashford!"

Everyone turned.

The lead agent spoke urgently.

"We have a problem."

"What happened?" Reed asked.

The agent looked directly at Celeste.

"Your father has disappeared."

Celeste frowned.

"My father?"

The agent clarified.

"Daniel Carter."

"He vanished ten minutes after leaving the airport."

The ballroom fell silent.

The second agent added the words no one wanted to hear.

May you like

"We believe..."

"...someone took him."
