CHAPTER 20 — The Purge Protocol

The basement erupted into chaos.

The emergency lights flashed red.

The alarm screamed through the Ashford estate.

The message remained projected on the wall:

ELIMINATE ALL ASSETS.

No one moved for a second.

Because everyone understood what those words meant.

Not a threat.

Not a warning.

An order.

Admiral Reed immediately took control.

"Everyone down!"

The agents formed a protective circle.

Celeste grabbed Nathaniel Cross and pulled him behind the concrete pillar.

The movement surprised everyone.

Even Cross.

He looked at her.

"You're protecting me?"

She didn't look at him.

"You're a witness."

A faint smile appeared on his face.

"Still thinking like an officer."

"No."

Celeste finally looked at him.

"I'm thinking like someone who wants answers."

The second bullet had missed Cross's heart by inches.

The forensic agent examined the wound.

"Clean entry."

"High-caliber weapon."

"Professional shooter."

Reed looked toward the security monitors.

"Find the shooter."

The technician typed rapidly.

Then froze.

"Sir..."

"What?"

"Every camera inside the mansion just went offline."

Reed's face hardened.

"Again?"

"No."

The technician swallowed.

"This is different."

"What do you mean?"

"The cameras weren't disabled."

"They were deleted."

Michael Lawson looked terrified.

"That's impossible."

Reed turned.

"Why?"

"Because Eleanor designed this security system."

"And?"

Michael's voice dropped.

"She built it so no one could erase anything."

Silence.

"Unless..."

He looked at the hidden Phoenix room.

"...they had administrator access."

Arthur slowly looked around.

"Who has that?"

Nobody answered.

Because everyone already knew.

Someone inside the Ashford family.

Suddenly, every phone in the room received a message.

One after another.

The same notification.

UNKNOWN SENDER

Celeste opened hers.

A photograph appeared.

A live image.

Taken moments ago.

It showed the basement.

It showed all of them.

But the angle was impossible.

The camera was inside the hidden room.

Someone was watching.

The message below appeared:

YOU BROKE THE FIRST RULE.

YOU TRUSTED THE WRONG PERSON.

Victoria's face turned pale.

"That's what he always said."

Celeste looked at her.

"Who?"

Victoria whispered:

"Cross."

Everyone looked at Nathaniel.

He shook his head.

"No."

"This isn't me."

For the first time...

No one was sure.

Admiral Reed stepped closer.

"Then prove it."

Cross looked at him.

"You think I can prove anything?"

"You built Phoenix."

"No."

Cross's voice became sharp.

"I destroyed parts of it."

"After I realized what it had become."

Reed didn't lower his weapon.

"Convenient story."

Cross looked exhausted.

"You're right."

"It is."

"But if I were the enemy..."

He pointed toward the screen.

"Why would I warn you?"

Celeste studied him.

She had spent years reading people.

On battlefields.

In negotiations.

Under pressure.

Cross was hiding something.

But not fear.

Not guilt.

Something else.

Regret.

She turned toward Victoria.

"Tell me everything."

Victoria looked shocked.

"Everything?"

"About Cross."

"About the training."

"About the people who contacted you."

Victoria hesitated.

Then slowly nodded.

"I was sixteen when I met the woman."

Arthur frowned.

"What woman?"

Victoria looked down.

"She said she worked with Mom."

"She knew everything about our family."

"She knew what Celeste was doing at the academy."

"She knew what Daniel had discovered."

Celeste's eyes narrowed.

"What did she want?"

Victoria answered:

"She wanted me to watch."

"Watch what?"

"You."

Silence.

Victoria continued.

"They told me Celeste was dangerous."

"That one day she would destroy our family."

Arthur shook his head.

"No..."

Victoria looked at him.

"I believed them."

A tear fell.

"Because I was jealous."

The confession surprised everyone.

"I thought Mom loved Celeste more."

"I thought Dad respected Celeste more."

"I thought everyone saw me as the second daughter."

Celeste remained silent.

Victoria continued.

"They gave me attention."

"They made me feel important."

"They told me I had a purpose."

Michael looked away.

"They recruited you."

Victoria nodded.

"But I didn't know the truth."

"Not until tonight."

The basement suddenly shook.

A deep explosion echoed somewhere above them.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Reed immediately checked his radio.

"Report."

Static.

Then—

A voice.

"Admiral..."

The security officer sounded terrified.

"The east wing is on fire."

Arthur froze.

"Eleanor's study."

They rushed upstairs.

Smoke filled the hallway.

Fire consumed the old east wing.

The hidden rooms.

The journals.

The evidence.

Everything.

Except—

The basement.

The Phoenix files remained safe.

Because Eleanor had expected this.

Celeste stared at the flames.

"Someone came here to destroy the evidence."

Reed nodded.

"And they knew exactly where it was."

Arthur looked around.

His home.

His empire.

His family.

All built on secrets.

Then—

A federal agent approached.

"Commander."

"What?"

"We recovered a person near the east gate."

"Who?"

The agent hesitated.

Then answered:

"Your executive assistant."

Arthur's eyes widened.

"James?"

The agent nodded.

"He was attempting to leave the property."

"With a hard drive."

They brought James into the courtyard.

Arthur stared at the man who had worked beside him for fifteen years.

"Why?"

James said nothing.

Celeste stepped forward.

"What was on the hard drive?"

The agent opened the evidence bag.

Inside was a device marked:

PHOENIX CENTRAL ARCHIVE

Arthur looked sick.

"My assistant..."

"...was part of this?"

James finally laughed.

Not nervously.

Not fearfully.

Almost proudly.

"You still don't understand."

Everyone turned.

James looked at Celeste.

"The Phoenix Circle doesn't need people inside your company."

"It doesn't need people inside your family."

"It owns the foundation everything is built on."

Celeste narrowed her eyes.

"Who do you work for?"

James smiled.

Then looked toward the burning mansion.

"The same person your mother feared."

A pause.

"The person who was there the night she died."

Arthur stepped forward.

"Who?"

James looked at him.

And said the name that froze the entire courtyard.

"Your father."

Silence.

Arthur went completely still.

"My father died twenty years ago."

James smiled.

"That's what they wanted you to believe."

A phone rang.

Everyone turned.

The sound came from inside the burning east wing.

Impossible.

No one was there.

A single device continued ringing among the flames.

Celeste walked toward it.

Against every instinct.

She entered the smoke.

And found an old landline phone sitting on Eleanor's desk.

The receiver was off the hook.

She picked it up.

A man's voice spoke.

Old.

Calm.

Familiar.

"Hello, Arthur."

Arthur's face turned white.

Because he recognized that voice.

A voice he had not heard in twenty years.

The voice of his dead father.

"It's time you learned what your family really is."

The line went dead.

May you like

And for the first time that night...

Arthur Ashford looked afraid.
