CHAPTER 15 — The Asset Who Refused to Obey

The archive room remained silent.

No one reached for the light switch.

No one spoke.

The final frame from the projector seemed burned into every mind.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE UPDATED

CAPTURE ALIVE

Arthur stared into the darkness.

"They're hunting my daughter."

Admiral Reed answered without hesitation.

"They've been hunting her since before she knew her own name."

The lights flickered back on.

No one looked the same.

Celeste remained calm.

Almost unnaturally calm.

She picked up the microfilm from the projector.

"There are missing frames."

Reed looked at her.

"How can you tell?"

"The reel should contain approximately three hundred images."

She held it against the light.

"There are gaps."

"Someone cut sections out."

Michael nodded slowly.

"Eleanor."

Arthur frowned.

"What?"

"She removed part of the microfilm before hiding it."

"Why?"

"So if someone found it..."

"...they would never possess the entire truth."

Celeste smiled faintly.

"My mother trusted puzzles."

The FBI technician interrupted.

"Commander..."

"I enhanced the surveillance file."

He placed several printed photographs on the table.

"The Green Asset designation."

"What about it?"

"I don't think it belongs to Victoria."

Arthur frowned.

"Her name was beside it."

"Yes."

"But look closely."

The analyst enlarged the document.

Every name had been typed.

Except one.

Victoria's.

Hers had been pasted over another.

Someone had physically replaced the original name.

The paper beneath showed traces of different letters.

Celeste leaned closer.

"Can you recover them?"

"I've already started."

Arthur exhaled slowly.

"So Victoria may not have been the original asset."

"No."

The analyst answered.

"Someone wanted us to believe she was."

Back at Ashford Manor...

Victoria sat alone in Eleanor's old study.

She had entered after the federal teams left.

The hidden room remained sealed as evidence.

The rest of the study was quiet.

She looked at the family portrait above the fireplace.

Arthur.

Eleanor.

Celeste.

Herself.

A perfect family.

A perfect lie.

She whispered,

"I'm sorry."

The words disappeared into the empty room.

She reached into her purse.

Removed a folded letter.

Its edges had yellowed with age.

She had carried it for twenty-one years.

Never opened it.

Because Eleanor had made her promise.

"Only read this if I die before I can explain everything."

Victoria closed her eyes.

"My time's up."

She broke the seal.

Inside...

Only one handwritten page.

My sweet Victoria,

If you're reading this, I've already failed to protect both of you.

You will spend years believing I loved Celeste more.

I didn't.

I protected her differently because the danger around her was different.

One day you'll understand.

If that day comes...

Find Michael.

Tell him the words:

The lighthouse never went dark.

He'll know what to do.

Love always,

Mom.

Victoria stared at the sentence.

The lighthouse never went dark.

She had no idea what it meant.

But she finally understood one thing.

Her mother had expected this night.

Meanwhile...

At Harbor National Bank...

The FBI analyst looked up from his computer.

"I recovered part of the erased name."

Everyone gathered around.

The damaged letters slowly appeared.

Not complete.

Only fragments.

...CHA...

Arthur frowned.

"Charles?"

"Charlotte?"

The analyst shook his head.

"Too damaged."

Then another fragment appeared.

...TER

Celeste's eyes narrowed.

"Carter."

The room fell silent.

The analyst typed faster.

More letters emerged.

Not Victoria.

Not Ashford.

CARTER

Reed's expression changed.

"My God..."

Arthur looked confused.

"What?"

The analyst completed the reconstruction.

The original Green Asset designation had read:

DANIEL CARTER

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Arthur whispered,

"Daniel..."

"...was the asset?"

Michael slowly shook his head.

"No."

"He was their operative."

Reed's voice became cold.

"Explain."

Michael looked exhausted.

"Thirty-five years ago..."

"Daniel infiltrated the Phoenix Circle."

"He pretended to work for them."

Arthur frowned.

"So he really was one of them?"

"No."

"He was undercover."

"He spent years gaining their trust."

"Until..."

"They discovered the truth."

Celeste finally understood.

"They captured him."

Michael nodded.

"And replaced him."

Arthur blinked.

"Replaced him?"

Michael walked toward the window.

"The Phoenix Circle couldn't admit Daniel had betrayed them."

"So they created another operative."

"Someone who would inherit his position."

Reed frowned.

"Who?"

Michael answered quietly.

"We never found out."

At that exact moment...

A secure military satellite phone rang.

Reed answered immediately.

"This is Reed."

He listened.

His face hardened.

"When?"

Another pause.

"Are you certain?"

He slowly lowered the phone.

"What happened?" Celeste asked.

"The Iceland embassy just contacted us."

"They found new evidence."

"And?"

"They reviewed Daniel Carter's medical examination."

Reed swallowed.

"There are signs..."

"...that he escaped years earlier than he claimed."

Arthur looked puzzled.

"What does that mean?"

Reed answered carefully.

"If the report is correct..."

"...Daniel wasn't imprisoned for thirty-four years."

Silence.

"He was free."

"For nearly eight."

Celeste's heartbeat quickened.

"No..."

"If that's true..."

"...where was he?"

No one had an answer.

Before anyone could process the revelation—

Michael's phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

He hesitated.

Then answered.

No one spoke on the other end.

Only breathing.

Slow.

Steady.

Then...

A familiar male voice.

Older.

Calmer.

But unmistakable.

"Michael."

The old accountant's eyes widened.

"...Daniel?"

The room froze.

Michael put the phone on speaker.

"Where are you?"

A quiet chuckle answered.

"Closer than all of you think."

Celeste stepped forward.

"Father?"

A long silence followed.

Then his voice softened.

"Celeste..."

"I wish we had met under different circumstances."

Tears filled her eyes.

"Where are you?"

"I'm somewhere they can never find me."

Reed interrupted.

"Who's hunting you?"

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he said something that made Michael's blood run cold.

"They finally activated..."

"...the Second Asset."

Michael staggered backward.

"No..."

Arthur grabbed his arm.

"What is the Second Asset?"

Michael looked horrified.

"I prayed..."

"...it was only a rumor."

Daniel's voice returned.

"If you want the truth..."

"Ask Victoria..."

"...who taught her how to shoot."

The line went dead.

The room remained frozen.

Every eye slowly turned toward Arthur.

Because Arthur knew something no one else did.

Victoria had never learned firearms from him.

She had always claimed...

Her mother had taught her.

May you like

But Eleanor...

Had never fired a weapon in her life.
