CHAPTER 11 — The Voice in the Darkness

Darkness swallowed the room.
For a split second, no one moved.
Then instinct took over.
Celeste dropped to one knee, pulling Arthur down beside her.
"Stay low!"
A heartbeat later—
The crystal chandelier above Eleanor's study exploded.
Glass rained across the floor where they had been standing only moments before.
Several guests outside the room screamed.
The steel shutters had sealed every exit.
No one could get in.
No one could get out.
Admiral Reed drew his sidearm.
"Flashlights!"
Three federal agents switched on tactical lights.
White beams cut through the darkness.
The study looked untouched.
Books.
Portraits.
The grand piano.
Everything remained in place.
Yet the voice still echoed calmly from unseen speakers.
"Excellent reflexes, Commander."
"Just like your father."
Celeste slowly turned.
"Show yourself."
A quiet chuckle answered.
"If I wanted to be seen..."
"...I wouldn't have hidden for three decades."
Arthur's jaw tightened.
"Who are you?"
Silence.
Then—
"A man your wife almost exposed."
Arthur felt his stomach knot.
"Eleanor..."
The voice continued.
"She was much smarter than you ever realized."
Celeste walked slowly toward the center of the room.
Every step was measured.
Every corner examined.
"You're watching us."
"Of course."
"Hidden cameras."
"Very good."
She looked upward.
The antique grandfather clock in the corner.
The bronze eagle statue.
The painting above the fireplace.
Tiny lenses.
Nearly invisible.
"This room has been under surveillance."
She looked around again.
"For years."
The voice laughed softly.
"Not years."
"Decades."
Arthur's face turned pale.
"This room belonged to my wife."
"Exactly."
Reed motioned to an FBI technician.
"Find the transmitter."
The technician opened a portable scanner.
His expression changed immediately.
"Sir..."
"What?"
"There isn't one."
"What do you mean?"
"The voice isn't broadcasting live."
Everyone looked at him.
"It's prerecorded."
Celeste frowned.
"No."
She pointed toward the speaker.
"He answered my questions."
The technician shook his head.
"He didn't."
"He predicted them."
Silence.
Absolute silence.
The realization hit everyone at once.
Every answer.
Every pause.
Every sentence.
Had been recorded long before tonight.
Whoever designed this...
Had anticipated exactly how the conversation would unfold.
Arthur whispered,
"My God..."
The voice continued.
"Arthur..."
"You always believed you were the smartest man in every room."
A long pause.
"That arrogance made you useful."
Arthur clenched his fists.
"Useful to whom?"
The answer came immediately.
"To me."
Suddenly—
One wall of the study slid open with a deep mechanical rumble.
Behind it...
A hidden room.
Dust filled the air as lights flickered on automatically.
No one spoke.
Arthur stared in disbelief.
"I've lived here for thirty-eight years."
"I never knew..."
Michael Lawson slowly stepped forward.
"I did."
Everyone turned toward him.
Arthur frowned.
"You knew?"
Michael nodded.
"Eleanor found it six months before she died."
Celeste looked at him sharply.
"You never told me."
"I promised her I wouldn't."
"Why?"
"Because she believed..."
He looked toward the hidden room.
"...someone would eventually return."
The room beyond was small.
No larger than a private office.
A single wooden desk stood in the center.
Behind it hung an enormous wall map of the world.
Dozens of colored strings connected cities across continents.
Tokyo.
Singapore.
Reykjavík.
London.
Sydney.
Washington.
Shanghai.
Every line converged toward one location.
Harbor City.
Arthur's breathing became uneven.
"What is this?"
Michael answered quietly.
"Eleanor called it..."
"...the Spider's Web."
On the desk rested a leather journal.
Its cover bore Eleanor Ashford's initials.
E.A.
Celeste reached for it.
Before her fingers touched the cover—
The recorded voice returned.
"Congratulations."
"You've found her diary."
Arthur whispered,
"Eleanor kept a diary?"
"I never knew."
The voice laughed.
"There were many things you never knew."
Celeste opened the journal.
The first pages contained ordinary entries.
Family dinners.
Business events.
Charity galas.
Then...
The handwriting changed.
Sharper.
More urgent.
March 4
Arthur doesn't see it.
But someone inside Ashford Global is moving money through shell companies.
April 17
I confronted Victoria today.
She knew more than she admitted.
Arthur looked up.
"Victoria..."
His younger daughter instinctively stepped backward.
"I've never seen that journal."
No one answered.
Celeste turned another page.
May 22
Daniel is alive.
The room froze.
Arthur's head snapped upward.
"What?"
Celeste continued reading.
They lied to everyone.
Daniel survived.
Someone has been keeping him hidden.
Michael slowly closed his eyes.
"So she knew..."
Admiral Reed whispered.
"Twelve years ago."
Another page.
June 3
I finally know who controls Project Phoenix.
It isn't the government.
It never was.
Reed's expression hardened.
"What?"
The final written page appeared.
Unlike the others...
It was stained.
A dark brown mark spread across the bottom.
Old.
Dried.
Celeste recognized it immediately.
Blood.
Her heartbeat quickened.
She began reading aloud.
If you're reading this...
Then I failed.
They discovered what I knew.
I don't think I'll survive much longer.
Arthur closed his eyes.
"No..."
Arthur will blame himself.
He shouldn't.
He was never the target.
Celeste's voice trembled.
They wanted Daniel.
They couldn't find him.
So they came for everyone he loved.
The room fell completely silent.
Another line.
If anything happens to me...
Never trust...
The sentence ended abruptly.
The remainder of the page had been torn away.
Someone had deliberately removed it.
Arthur whispered,
"Never trust who?"
No answer.
Only silence.
Suddenly—
The grandfather clock in the hidden room chimed.
Once.
Twice.
Eleven times.
Then—
A compartment opened beneath the desk.
Inside rested a small brass key.
Attached to it was a faded luggage tag.
Written in Eleanor's handwriting were four words.
Safe Deposit Box 317
Harbor National Bank.
Celeste carefully picked up the key.
Michael looked at it.
His face lost all color.
"No..."
Arthur frowned.
"What?"
Michael whispered,
"She actually did it."
"What did she do?"
Michael looked directly at Celeste.
"Twelve years ago..."
"Eleanor told me..."
"If she disappeared..."
"...everything they needed to destroy Project Phoenix would be waiting inside that box."
Before anyone could speak—
A deafening alarm echoed throughout Ashford Manor.
One of the federal agents pressed a hand to his earpiece.
His expression turned white.
"Admiral!"
Reed turned immediately.
"What happened?"
The agent swallowed hard.
"Pier 19..."
"What about it?"
"It just exploded."
Silence.
Then the agent uttered the words that froze everyone in place.
May you like
"The entire warehouse..."
"...was empty."
