CHAPTER 13 — The Daughter Who Stayed Behind

The tape stopped.
The soft click of the cassette echoed through the underground vault.
No one moved.
No one spoke.
Daniel Carter's final words hung in the air like a sentence waiting to be finished.
"The man you're looking for... is already inside the Ashford family."
Arthur slowly lowered himself into the nearest chair.
His hands trembled.
"Inside... my family?"
Admiral Reed removed the cassette and handed it to a federal evidence technician.
"I want three authenticated copies."
"Yes, sir."
"No one leaves this vault until it's secured."
Celeste remained perfectly still.
Something about Daniel's choice of words troubled her.
Not Ashford Global.
Not your company.
Not your house.
He had said...
The Ashford family.
She replayed the sentence in her mind.
Over and over.
Then she looked at Michael Lawson.
"My father chose his words carefully."
Michael nodded.
"He always did."
"He didn't say the enemy was working for the family."
"No."
"He said the enemy was inside the family."
Arthur looked up.
"What's the difference?"
Celeste answered quietly.
"The difference..."
"...changes everything."
Admiral Reed frowned.
"Explain."
"If someone works for the Ashfords..."
"...they can be fired."
"If someone is inside the family..."
"...they've been there from the beginning."
Silence settled over the vault.
Arthur felt a cold weight settle in his chest.
How many people had truly been part of his family?
How many had merely worn the name?
Just then, an FBI analyst hurried down the vault stairs.
"Admiral."
"What is it?"
"We've recovered security footage from Ashford Manor."
Reed frowned.
"The east wing?"
"Yes, sir."
"The cameras came back online two minutes after you left."
The analyst connected his tablet to a portable monitor.
Black-and-white footage filled the screen.
Time stamp:
10:41 P.M.
The hallway outside Eleanor's study.
Empty.
Ten seconds passed.
Twenty.
Then—
A figure appeared.
Not from the hallway.
From inside the wall.
The hidden door opened.
A tall man dressed entirely in black stepped into the corridor.
His face was concealed beneath a hood.
He calmly walked away.
No panic.
No hurry.
As though he knew no one could stop him.
Arthur leaned closer.
"Can you enhance his face?"
The analyst shook his head.
"No."
"He deliberately avoided every camera."
Celeste narrowed her eyes.
"He wanted us to see him."
Reed looked at her.
"What makes you say that?"
She pointed at the footage.
"He walked directly beneath every camera."
"He knew exactly where they were."
Arthur frowned.
"So why hide his face?"
"Because..."
Celeste paused.
"...his face isn't important."
The video continued.
The man reached the front entrance.
Instead of leaving...
He stopped.
Turned toward the security camera.
Then slowly raised his right hand.
On his wrist...
A silver bracelet caught the light.
A bracelet engraved with a single symbol.
A phoenix.
The same emblem from the airport.
The same emblem from the cargo container aboard the USS Resolute.
The same emblem from the ransom photograph.
The man looked directly into the camera.
Then—
He saluted.
Not a military salute.
Not a civilian greeting.
A gesture no one recognized.
Except...
Michael Lawson.
His face drained of color.
"Oh, God..."
Arthur turned sharply.
"You know that salute?"
Michael whispered,
"It was never supposed to exist."
Reed stepped closer.
"What is it?"
Michael hesitated.
Then answered.
"It belonged to the original Phoenix Circle."
Silence.
Arthur frowned.
"I've never heard of it."
"No."
Michael nodded.
"Very few people have."
"The Phoenix Circle wasn't a government agency."
"It wasn't a corporation."
"It wasn't even an organization."
"It was..."
He searched for the right word.
"...a network."
Celeste folded her arms.
"What kind of network?"
Michael looked directly at her.
"The kind that places one person..."
"...inside every institution."
The room grew colder.
"Military."
"Banking."
"Politics."
"Courts."
"Intelligence."
"Media."
"They spent decades placing loyal people in positions of power."
Arthur whispered,
"Sleeping agents."
Michael nodded.
"Exactly."
Admiral Reed's expression hardened.
"Who created it?"
Michael closed his eyes.
"I don't know."
"But Daniel did."
"He discovered them thirty-four years ago."
"And that's why they captured him."
Arthur slowly stood.
"If this network is real..."
"...then how do we fight it?"
No one answered immediately.
Finally—
Celeste spoke.
"We stop assuming we know who to trust."
At that exact moment, her phone vibrated.
One message.
Unknown number.
No caller ID.
She opened it.
Attached was a single photograph.
Her heart stopped.
It showed Ashford Manor.
Taken only seconds earlier.
Victoria stood on the front steps...
Speaking to the hooded man.
Face to face.
Arthur saw the image.
His expression darkened.
"No..."
The timestamp proved it had been taken less than one minute ago.
Victoria hadn't remained inside.
She had gone outside.
Alone.
To meet him.
Arthur immediately called her.
No answer.
Again.
Straight to voicemail.
His breathing quickened.
"She's involved."
Celeste looked at the photograph.
Something felt wrong.
She enlarged the image.
Then enlarged it again.
Finally...
She smiled.
Reed noticed.
"What?"
"Victoria isn't meeting him."
Arthur frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
Celeste handed him the phone.
"Look at her hands."
Arthur zoomed in.
Victoria's fingers were clenched so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.
One hand was hidden behind her back.
"What does that mean?"
Celeste answered softly.
"She's terrified."
Before anyone could respond—
The bank manager rushed downstairs.
"Commander!"
"What happened?"
"A package was just delivered."
"Delivered where?"
"To the front desk."
"No courier."
"No security footage."
"It was simply..."
"...there."
Reed took the small wooden box.
No markings.
No lock.
He opened it carefully.
Inside lay an antique silver pocket watch.
Arthur's breath caught.
"I know that watch."
Celeste looked at him.
"It belonged to Daniel Carter."
Michael nodded slowly.
"Eleanor kept it after he disappeared."
Arthur frowned.
"Then how..."
Beneath the watch rested another folded note.
This one contained only seven handwritten words.
You're running out of time, Arthur.
There was no signature.
But on the back of the note...
Pressed into the paper with dark red sealing wax...
Was the Ashford family crest.
Not a copy.
Not a photograph.
The original seal.
The one kept inside Arthur's private office safe.
Only three people had access to that safe.
Arthur.
His executive assistant.
And...
Victoria.
Arthur slowly closed his eyes.
His daughter had lied to him before.
She had framed her sister.
She had destroyed their family.
But this...
This was different.
Because if someone had used the Ashford family seal...
May you like
Then the enemy hadn't just infiltrated his company.
The enemy had possessed the keys to his empire all along.
