CHAPTER 27 — The Mother Behind the Glass

The world stopped.

Celeste couldn't breathe.

She couldn't move.

She could only stare.

Behind the glass stood a woman with the same eyes.

The same calm expression.

The same gentle sadness.

A face she had spent years trying to remember.

A face she had seen in photographs.

A face she had buried.

Her mother.

Eleanor Ashford.

"No..."

The word escaped Celeste's lips.

Not because she didn't believe it.

Because she couldn't.

Her entire life had been built around one painful truth.

Her mother was gone.

Dead.

Lost forever.

But now...

She was standing in front of her.

Alive.

The glass door remained locked.

Eleanor placed her hand against it.

"Celeste."

Her voice broke.

"I know you hate me."

Celeste stepped backward.

"No."

Her voice trembled.

"I don't know what I feel."

Behind her, the elevator opened.

Daniel, Arthur, Reed, Victoria, and Michael rushed inside.

Then they saw her.

Everyone froze.

Arthur looked like the ground had disappeared beneath him.

"Eleanor..."

The woman behind the glass looked at him.

For a moment...

The years vanished.

The pain vanished.

Only two people remained.

A husband.

And a wife who had been lost.

Arthur approached the glass.

"You died."

Eleanor looked down.

"I know."

"I watched your funeral."

"I know."

"I buried you."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I know."

Arthur's voice broke.

"Then why?"

Eleanor closed her eyes.

"Because if I came back..."

"I would have brought Phoenix to you."

Nobody spoke.

Celeste stared at her mother.

"You let me believe you were dead."

Eleanor looked at her.

"Yes."

"You let me grow up without you."

"Yes."

"You let me hate myself."

The pain in Eleanor's face was unbearable.

"No."

Celeste's voice became sharper.

"You weren't there."

"I needed you."

"I needed my mother."

Eleanor lowered her head.

"I know."

A pause.

"And that is the thing I regret most."

The glass door finally opened.

Eleanor stepped out slowly.

Older than the woman in the photographs.

But unmistakably the same.

She looked at Celeste like she was seeing her for the first time.

"My little girl..."

Celeste immediately stepped back.

"Don't."

Eleanor stopped.

Because she understood.

She didn't deserve that word.

Not yet.

Daniel moved beside Celeste.

"She saved your life."

Celeste looked at him.

"And she destroyed it."

Daniel nodded.

"Both are true."

That answer hurt more.

Because it was honest.

Eleanor looked around the hidden chamber.

"This room was built by my grandfather."

Arthur stared.

"Your grandfather?"

She nodded.

"The first Ashford who understood what Phoenix really was."

Michael frowned.

"Alistair?"

"No."

Everyone looked surprised.

Eleanor continued:

"The first Ashford was not the founder."

"He was the first person who tried to escape."

She walked toward the mirror.

Behind it was a hidden compartment.

Inside:

A small wooden box.

She opened it.

Inside was an old family photograph.

A photograph older than any they had seen.

It showed a young woman.

Standing beside Alistair Ashford.

But beneath the photograph was a name:

EVELYN ASHFORD

Arthur frowned.

"Who is she?"

Eleanor looked at him.

"The woman who created the first rebellion."

Celeste stepped closer.

"My ancestor?"

Eleanor nodded.

"She discovered what Phoenix would become."

"She tried to stop it."

"But the family erased her."

The pattern repeated.

Generation after generation.

Anyone who challenged the legacy disappeared.

Reed looked around.

"So this room was created as a hiding place."

"No."

Eleanor answered.

"It was created as a choice."

She pointed to the chair.

"The last Ashford always comes here."

Celeste frowned.

"Why?"

"Because every generation reaches a moment where they must decide."

"Continue Phoenix."

"Or end it."

Celeste looked at her.

"And everyone before me chose?"

Eleanor shook her head.

"No."

"They were never given the truth."

A screen appeared.

A list of Ashford heirs.

Names crossed out.

Failed successors.

But one name was different.

CELESTE ELEANOR ASHFORD

Status:

UNPREDICTABLE

Eleanor smiled sadly.

"Phoenix spent decades trying to understand why you were different."

Celeste looked at the screen.

"Because I refused to become them."

"Yes."

Arthur stepped forward.

"Why didn't you tell her?"

Eleanor looked at him.

"Because you loved her."

Arthur was confused.

"What?"

"If Celeste knew the truth as a child..."

"She would have grown up surrounded by suspicion."

"She would never have trusted anyone."

Eleanor looked at Daniel.

"We decided she deserved a chance to be normal."

Daniel nodded.

"And we failed."

The words were painful.

Because they both knew.

They had protected Celeste from Phoenix.

But they had not protected her from loneliness.

Suddenly, the hidden chamber shook.

An alarm activated.

Everyone turned.

A message appeared:

PHOENIX CENTRAL AUTHORITY RESTORED

NEW COMMANDER IDENTIFIED

Reed looked alarmed.

"Impossible."

Michael checked the system.

"Someone took control."

"Who?"

The screen changed.

A familiar face appeared.

Nathaniel Cross.

But Cross looked different.

No regret.

No hesitation.

Only confidence.

"You finally found her."

Celeste stared.

"Cross."

He smiled.

"The missing piece."

Eleanor stepped forward.

"You were never supposed to survive."

Cross laughed.

"Neither were you."

Arthur looked at him.

"You betrayed everyone."

Cross shook his head.

"No."

"I completed the mission."

Celeste narrowed her eyes.

"What mission?"

Cross looked directly at her.

"The mission your mother started."

Everyone froze.

Eleanor's face changed.

"That's a lie."

"Is it?"

Cross smiled.

"Tell them."

Silence.

"Tell them why you really disappeared."

Eleanor said nothing.

Cross continued:

"Tell them why Phoenix spent twenty years searching for you."

"Tell them why you left Celeste behind."

Celeste looked at her mother.

A terrible feeling appeared.

"Mom..."

Eleanor closed her eyes.

And whispered:

"Because I was not running from Phoenix."

A pause.

"I was running from what I created."

The room went silent.

Cross smiled.

"Now she knows."

The screen changed.

A new file appeared.

PROJECT DAWN: ORIGINAL DESIGN

CREATOR: ELEANOR WHITMORE ASHFORD

SUBJECT: CELESTE ASHFORD

Celeste stared.

Her heart sank.

"No."

Eleanor looked at her.

Tears filled her eyes.

"I wanted to save you."

"But I made the same mistake Phoenix made."

"What mistake?"

Eleanor whispered:

"I believed I could design the future."

The lights went out.

The last thing Celeste saw was her mother's face.

And Eleanor's final words:

May you like

"I didn't create a weapon, Celeste..."

"I created the person who would have to destroy me."
