CHAPTER 18 — The Daughter They Created

The library remained frozen long after the screen went black.

No one dared speak.

The image of Nathaniel Cross disappeared, but his words remained.

"Your daughter was selected before she was born."

Arthur stood in the center of the room, unable to move.

For years, he had believed he knew Celeste.

Her favorite books.

Her stubbornness.

Her kindness.

The way she always defended people weaker than herself.

Now a stranger had claimed all of it was part of a plan.

A design.

An experiment.

Celeste was the first to break the silence.

"No."

Her voice was quiet.

But certain.

"No one created me."

Admiral Reed looked at her.

"Commander..."

She shook her head.

"I know what they do."

"I know how they manipulate people."

"They take pieces of truth and build lies around them."

She looked at the blank screen.

"Cross wants me to question everything."

Michael Lawson slowly nodded.

"That is exactly what he wants."

Arthur turned toward him.

"You knew about this?"

Michael looked exhausted.

"I knew there was a possibility."

"A possibility?"

Arthur's voice rose.

"You knew someone was experimenting on my daughter?"

"No."

Michael answered firmly.

"I knew someone was interested in her."

"There's a difference."

Celeste looked at him.

"Explain."

Michael walked toward Eleanor's old desk.

"When Daniel discovered the Phoenix Circle, he learned something terrifying."

"What?"

"They weren't just recruiting people."

"They were studying bloodlines."

The room became silent.

"Families with specific traits."

"Intelligence."

"Memory."

"Pattern recognition."

"Emotional control under pressure."

Reed frowned.

"Genetic profiling."

Michael nodded.

"Exactly."

Arthur looked horrified.

"They were choosing children?"

"No."

Michael corrected.

"They were choosing possibilities."

He opened another drawer inside Eleanor's desk.

Hidden beneath the wood was a small metal case.

"Eleanor found this."

He placed it on the table.

A faded label covered the top.

PHOENIX — FAMILY ASSESSMENT

Celeste opened the case.

Inside were dozens of files.

Names.

Dates.

Photographs.

Families from around the world.

Military families.

Scientists.

Diplomats.

Engineers.

Then—

One file.

Her name.

She stared at it.

ASHFORD, CELESTE ELEANOR

Her fingers tightened.

The file contained medical records.

Academic evaluations.

Childhood observations.

But the most disturbing section was the first page.

PREDICTIVE PROFILE

Subject demonstrates:

  • Advanced spatial reasoning.

  • Exceptional memory retention.

  • High stress tolerance.

  • Leadership inclination.

  • Protective response toward others.

Below it...

A handwritten note.

Not Eleanor's.

Not Daniel's.

Someone else's.

Potential exceeds expectations.

Celeste closed the file.

"I was six years old."

Michael nodded.

"I know."

Arthur's anger finally exploded.

"Who gave them permission?"

No one answered.

He grabbed the file.

"My daughter was a child."

Michael looked at him sadly.

"That's why Eleanor fought."

"She wasn't protecting a secret."

"She was protecting Celeste's right to choose who she became."

A sudden sound interrupted them.

A phone ringing.

Everyone turned.

It was Victoria's phone.

She looked confused.

"No one has this number."

The screen showed:

UNKNOWN CALLER

Admiral Reed motioned.

"Answer it."

Victoria hesitated.

Then pressed speaker.

Silence.

Then a familiar voice.

"Nathaniel Cross."

Everyone froze.

Victoria whispered,

"You..."

Cross laughed softly.

"Hello, Victoria."

Her face turned pale.

"Why are you calling me?"

"Because you finally opened your mother's letter."

Victoria looked at Celeste.

"You knew?"

"Of course."

The voice became colder.

"I've been watching this family for years."

Celeste stepped closer.

"Where is my father?"

Cross didn't answer.

Instead—

A video appeared on Victoria's phone.

Daniel Carter.

Alive.

Sitting in a dark room.

His face bruised.

But conscious.

Celeste's breath caught.

"Father..."

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

For a moment...

His expression softened.

Then Cross appeared behind him.

"Say goodbye."

Daniel ignored him.

He spoke directly to Celeste.

"Listen to me."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Don't believe everything they tell you."

Cross grabbed him.

The video cut.

Reed immediately traced the signal.

"Can you locate it?"

The intelligence officer typed rapidly.

"Working."

Seconds passed.

Then—

His expression changed.

"That's impossible."

"What?"

"The signal is moving."

"Moving where?"

"Everywhere."

He looked confused.

"It's being bounced through hundreds of servers."

Cross had prepared for this.

Celeste stared at the phone.

"He wants me angry."

Reed looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because anger makes people predictable."

She looked at the Phoenix file.

"They don't want me dead."

"No."

"They want me to become exactly what they designed."

Arthur stepped beside her.

"Then what do we do?"

For the first time that night...

Celeste looked at him not as a wounded daughter.

But as a commander.

"We stop playing their game."

She picked up the Phoenix file.

"If they studied my entire life..."

"Then they know my strengths."

"And my weaknesses."

Reed nodded.

"So we do the unexpected."

Celeste looked at him.

"Exactly."

Suddenly, the mansion security alarm activated.

A warning appeared on every screen.

INTRUSION DETECTED

Federal agents moved instantly.

"Location?"

The security officer checked.

His face went pale.

"Lower basement."

Arthur frowned.

"The basement hasn't been used in twenty years."

Michael whispered,

"Yes, it has."

Everyone turned.

"What?"

Michael looked toward the floor.

"Eleanor discovered another hidden room."

Arthur stared.

"Another one?"

Michael nodded.

"But she told me never to open it."

"Why?"

Michael's voice lowered.

"Because she said..."

"...if that room was ever opened..."

"...it meant the Phoenix Circle had already won."

The basement doors opened.

The team descended slowly.

Dust covered the stairs.

At the bottom...

A single door waited.

No handle.

No lock.

Only a scanner.

A fingerprint reader.

Celeste approached.

The machine activated.

A red light scanned her hand.

Everyone held their breath.

Then—

ACCESS GRANTED

The door opened.

Inside was not a secret laboratory.

Not weapons.

Not files.

Only one thing.

A large photograph on the wall.

A photograph taken before Celeste was born.

It showed three people.

Daniel Carter.

Eleanor Ashford.

And...

A third person standing beside them.

Arthur stepped closer.

His face changed.

Because he knew that man.

Everyone in the room knew him.

The third person was...

Nathaniel Cross.

And beneath the photograph was a handwritten message from Eleanor:

May you like

The man who destroyed our family was never outside it.

He was invited in.
