CHAPTER 29 — The Man Who Owned the Shadows

The screen remained frozen.

A face stared back at them.

A face that belonged to a dead man.

A man whose funeral had been attended by thousands.

A man whose legacy had built one of the greatest corporations in the world.

Edmund Ashford.

Nobody spoke.

Not even Nathaniel Cross.

For the first time since they had discovered Phoenix...

Cross looked afraid.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

Afraid.

Celeste noticed immediately.

She turned toward him.

"You knew."

Cross said nothing.

Her eyes narrowed.

"You knew he was alive."

Still silence.

"Didn't you?"

Cross slowly looked at the screen.

Then he whispered:

"Yes."

The answer shocked everyone.

Arthur stepped forward.

"My father has been alive this entire time?"

Cross looked at him.

"Yes."

Arthur's face twisted with disbelief.

"You let me bury him."

"I watched you mourn him."

"I spent twenty years believing I lost my father."

Cross looked away.

"Because that was what he wanted."

Arthur's anger exploded.

"What he wanted?"

"You mean what he planned?"

Cross didn't answer.

Because Arthur was right.

Daniel stared at the image.

"I thought he was gone."

Cross looked at him.

"Everyone did."

"Even Phoenix?"

Cross nodded.

"Especially Phoenix."

Celeste looked between them.

"Explain."

Cross sighed.

"The truth is..."

"Phoenix was never one organization."

"It was two."

A new diagram appeared.

Two symbols.

One:

PHOENIX

The other:

ECLIPSE

Cross pointed toward the screen.

"Phoenix believed in control through influence."

"Money."

"Information."

"Politics."

"Power from the shadows."

He pointed to the second symbol.

"Eclipse believed something different."

Reed stepped closer.

"What?"

Cross answered:

"Control through collapse."

The room became silent.

"Eclipse believed the world was too corrupt to repair."

Cross continued.

"They believed the only solution was destruction."

"Destroy governments."

"Destroy economies."

"Destroy systems."

"Then rebuild everything under their command."

Michael whispered:

"So Phoenix was the moderate side."

Cross nodded.

"And Eclipse was the extremist side."

Celeste looked at the screen.

"And my grandfather?"

Cross's expression hardened.

"Edmund created Eclipse."

Arthur closed his eyes.

"No."

Cross continued.

"Your father didn't believe in guiding the world."

"He believed in owning it."

The words cut deep.

Because Arthur finally understood.

His father's ambition had never been business.

Business was only the mask.

Celeste looked at Daniel.

"You knew?"

Daniel shook his head.

"Not everything."

"What did you know?"

Daniel answered quietly:

"That Edmund was not the victim everyone believed."

The room went silent.

Daniel continued.

"When I joined Phoenix, I believed I was fighting corrupt people inside the organization."

"But eventually I discovered something worse."

"What?"

"Eclipse was controlling Phoenix."

Celeste understood.

"The enemy was inside the enemy."

Daniel nodded.

Suddenly, the screen changed.

A live video appeared.

A man sitting in a dark room.

Older.

Gray hair.

Calm eyes.

Edmund Ashford.

Alive.

Arthur stepped toward the screen.

"Father."

Edmund smiled.

"My son."

The sound of his voice broke something inside Arthur.

Not because he was happy.

Because he realized the truth.

His father had watched him suffer.

"Why?"

Arthur asked.

"Why did you let me believe you were dead?"

Edmund smiled.

"Because grief makes people obedient."

Arthur's face changed.

"You used me."

"Of course."

No regret.

No apology.

Nothing.

Edmund looked at Celeste.

"And there she is."

Celeste stared back.

"The granddaughter you built everything around."

Edmund smiled.

"Not built."

"Prepared."

Her expression hardened.

"You watched me."

"Since birth."

"You manipulated my family."

"Yes."

"You destroyed people's lives."

Edmund nodded.

"Yes."

The honesty was disturbing.

Like he believed every answer was obvious.

"Why?"

Edmund leaned closer.

"Because every generation needs a successor."

Celeste shook her head.

"I rejected Phoenix."

Edmund smiled.

"Phoenix."

A pause.

"Yes."

"But Phoenix was never the final objective."

The room became cold.

"What was?"

Edmund answered:

"Eclipse."

A file appeared.

PROJECT ECLIPSE — FINAL SUCCESSOR

A name.

CELESTE ASHFORD

Everyone froze.

Again.

Her name.

Always her name.

Celeste looked at her mother.

"You knew."

Eleanor looked devastated.

"I suspected."

"And you still hid it."

"Because I wanted you free."

Edmund laughed softly.

"Eleanor always believed love could defeat destiny."

He looked at Celeste.

"She was wrong."

Celeste stepped closer to the screen.

"No."

Edmund raised an eyebrow.

"No?"

She looked at the files.

"Everyone keeps making the same mistake."

"What mistake?"

"You think knowing my blood means owning me."

For the first time...

Edmund's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Celeste continued:

"My grandfather."

"My father."

"Phoenix."

"Eclipse."

"All of you believe power comes from inheritance."

She looked directly at him.

"But power comes from choice."

Edmund smiled.

"You sound exactly like Eleanor."

"Good."

The screen flickered.

Then another message appeared.

ECLIPSE ACTIVATION: 10 MINUTES

Reed looked alarmed.

"What is happening?"

Edmund answered.

"The world is about to experience a correction."

Arthur stared.

"You would destroy everything?"

Edmund looked at him.

"I would rebuild everything."

The countdown started.

09:59

Cross suddenly moved.

Everyone turned.

He walked toward the central terminal.

Celeste raised her weapon.

"Don't."

Cross stopped.

Then slowly turned.

"I spent thirty years believing control was the answer."

A pause.

"I was wrong."

Edmund's expression changed.

"Nathaniel."

Cross ignored him.

He looked at Celeste.

"Your mother was right."

Everyone froze.

Cross continued:

"The successor was never supposed to inherit the system."

"The successor was supposed to end it."

Edmund's face darkened.

"You always were weak."

Cross smiled.

"No."

"I was human."

He entered a command.

The system reacted.

ACCESS DENIED

ECLIPSE OVERRIDE REQUIRED

Cross looked frustrated.

"It's protected."

Celeste stepped forward.

"Because it needs an Ashford."

Everyone looked at her.

She understood.

This was the final trap.

Not Phoenix.

Not Eclipse.

Her own bloodline.

Edmund spoke calmly.

"Come home, Celeste."

"No."

"You don't even know what you could become."

She looked at the screen.

"I know exactly what I could become."

A pause.

"And that's why I won't."

The countdown continued.

07:32

Suddenly, a hidden message appeared.

Not from Edmund.

Not from Phoenix.

From Eleanor.

A final recording.

Her mother's voice filled the room:

"Celeste..."

"If Edmund is alive, then there is one thing you must know."

The room became silent.

"He was never the first Ashford to create Eclipse."

Everyone froze.

Eleanor continued:

"He inherited it too."

A new photograph appeared.

Older than Edmund.

Older than Alistair.

A woman.

The same woman from the ancient photograph.

Evelyn Ashford.

Celeste whispered:

"She started it."

Eleanor's final words appeared:

"The first Ashford who created darkness..."

"was also the first Ashford who tried to escape it."

The countdown continued.

06:59

And then the last line appeared:

EVELYN ASHFORD IS ALIVE

Everyone turned toward the screen.

Because if that was true...

Then the Ashford family secret was not decades old.

It was a century old.

May you like

And the person who started the war...

Had been watching from the beginning.
