CHAPTER 12 — The Ghost in the Fire

The words struck the room like a shockwave.

"The entire warehouse... was empty."

No one spoke.

Arthur looked from the federal agent to Admiral Reed.

"What exploded?"

The agent took a slow breath.

"Warehouse 47."

"The one mentioned in the ransom note."

Celeste's expression remained unreadable.

She had already reached the same conclusion.

"It wasn't a rescue."

She looked toward the burning image now appearing on the agent's tablet.

"It was a distraction."

Satellite footage streamed onto the screen.

Towering flames swallowed Pier 19.

Firefighters surrounded the building.

Emergency vehicles filled every road leading to the harbor.

The explosion had been powerful enough to shatter windows nearly half a mile away.

Reed narrowed his eyes.

"Any casualties?"

"None."

"No hostages."

"No bodies."

"No evidence Daniel Carter was ever there."

Arthur frowned.

"Then why lure us there?"

Celeste answered quietly.

"So we wouldn't be somewhere else."

The room fell silent.

Michael Lawson suddenly looked toward the old grandfather clock.

His face stiffened.

"No..."

Celeste followed his gaze.

"What is it?"

"Eleanor once told me..."

He swallowed.

"If they ever create a distraction..."

"...it means they're already stealing something more important."

Arthur's pulse quickened.

"What?"

Michael whispered one word.

"The bank."

Every head turned toward the brass key resting in Celeste's hand.

Safe Deposit Box 317

Harbor National Bank.

Reed didn't hesitate.

"We move now."

Fifteen minutes later...

A convoy of black SUVs raced through the deserted streets of Harbor City.

Red and blue lights reflected across rain-soaked pavement.

Inside the lead vehicle, silence filled the cabin.

Arthur sat beside Celeste.

Neither had spoken since leaving the mansion.

Finally...

Arthur broke the silence.

"When you were little..."

Celeste kept her eyes on the road ahead.

"You wanted to tell me something every Friday."

She didn't answer.

"You'd wait in my office."

"I remember."

"I almost never came."

"No."

"You didn't."

Arthur closed his eyes.

"I always thought I had more time."

Celeste finally looked at him.

"That's the lie successful people tell themselves."

Arthur couldn't argue.

In the second vehicle...

Admiral Reed reviewed Daniel Carter's file.

One page had caught his attention.

Psychological Evaluation

He read a handwritten note from thirty years earlier.

Daniel Carter possesses an exceptional ability to detect patterns others overlook.

Another note followed.

Recommended successor if Carter is ever lost: None.

Reed frowned.

"No replacement?"

The intelligence officer beside him shook his head.

"There wasn't one."

"He was unique."

The convoy reached Harbor National Bank in less than ten minutes.

The building stood dark.

Elegant.

Silent.

Too silent.

Reed raised a hand.

"No one goes in until it's cleared."

Federal tactical teams spread across the entrance.

Moments later—

The team leader spoke through his radio.

"Ground floor clear."

"Second floor clear."

"No hostiles."

Reed nodded.

"Let's move."

The bank manager hurried downstairs in his pajamas.

His hands trembled.

"What is happening?"

Reed displayed his credentials.

"We need access to Safe Deposit Box 317."

The manager frowned.

"I'm sorry..."

"That's impossible."

"Why?"

"It was opened tonight."

Celeste's heart skipped.

"What time?"

The manager checked the electronic log.

"Eight forty-three."

Arthur looked at his watch.

That was...

Exactly when the ballroom hack had begun.

"It was synchronized," Celeste whispered.

Reed's expression hardened.

"Who accessed it?"

"I'm afraid I can't—"

"The law says you can."

The manager nodded nervously.

He opened the digital record.

Then froze.

"That's strange."

"What?"

"There isn't a customer name."

"Only..."

He leaned closer.

"An authorization code."

Arthur frowned.

"What code?"

The manager slowly read it aloud.

PHOENIX-001

The room became still.

They hurried into the underground vault.

Steel doors several feet thick slowly swung open.

Thousands of deposit boxes lined the walls.

The manager stopped before Box 317.

"It's empty."

Celeste inserted Eleanor's brass key anyway.

The lock turned.

She pulled open the drawer.

Nothing.

Arthur whispered,

"We're too late."

"No."

Celeste's military instincts told her something was wrong.

She reached inside.

Ran her fingers along the wooden base.

Then paused.

"There."

A tiny notch.

She pressed it.

Click.

A false bottom lifted.

Hidden beneath it...

Was a single cassette tape.

And one folded letter.

Michael exhaled in relief.

"Eleanor..."

"You were always one step ahead."

Celeste unfolded the letter.

Across the front, her mother's elegant handwriting read:

If Box 317 is ever opened before you arrive...

...they've taken the wrong prize.

Arthur frowned.

"The wrong prize?"

Celeste opened the letter.

My dearest Celeste,

If you're reading this, it means two things.

First...

I'm gone.

Second...

They've finally revealed themselves.

Don't be afraid that the box is empty.

It was never meant to hold evidence.

It was meant to attract thieves.

The real evidence has always been somewhere they would never think to search.

Inside the place they helped build themselves.

Love,

Mom.

Arthur looked confused.

"What does that mean?"

Michael slowly smiled.

"I know."

Everyone turned toward him.

"Eleanor told me once..."

"If evil builds its own throne..."

"...that's where it eventually buries its secrets."

Reed frowned.

"Speak plainly."

Michael looked directly at Arthur.

"The evidence isn't in a bank."

"It's inside Ashford Global Headquarters."

Arthur stared.

"What?"

Before anyone could respond—

The cassette tape player on the manager's desk suddenly activated by itself.

No one had touched it.

The tape began to play.

Static.

Then—

A man's voice.

Older.

Calm.

Measured.

Every hair on Celeste's arms stood up.

She had never heard him before.

Yet somehow...

She knew.

Instinctively.

It was Daniel Carter.

"If you're hearing my voice..."

"...then Eleanor succeeded."

Celeste's eyes filled with tears.

Arthur slowly stepped back.

The recording continued.

"There's a possibility I won't survive long enough to come home."

"If that's true..."

"Celeste..."

A long pause.

Then—

"I've loved you every single day of your life."

The room fell silent.

Celeste closed her eyes.

The voice continued.

"I never abandoned you."

"I was imprisoned."

"I escaped."

"And I'm still running."

Reed exchanged a glance with his agents.

Daniel had recorded this recently.

Which meant...

He knew he was being hunted.

The tape crackled again.

Then Daniel spoke the words that changed everything.

"The man you're looking for..."

"...is already inside the Ashford family."

Arthur's breathing stopped.

Victoria wasn't with them.

She had remained at the mansion.

For the first time that night...

Arthur felt genuine fear.

May you like

Because whoever Daniel meant...

Was still waiting there.
