CHAPTER 17 — The Night Daniel Came Home

The library fell into absolute silence.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

The forensic specialist repeated the words slowly, as if saying them again would somehow make them less impossible.

"Daniel Carter's DNA was found on Eleanor Ashford's diary."

Arthur stared at the report.

His face had lost all color.

"That can't be true."

The specialist looked uncomfortable.

"Sir, the sample is old, but the match is conclusive."

"How old?"

"Approximately twelve years."

The exact year Eleanor died.

Celeste took the report from him.

She read it carefully.

Then again.

Her military training told her not to react emotionally.

But this wasn't a battlefield.

This was her family.

Her mother's death.

Her father's disappearance.

Her entire life built on missing pieces.

She looked at Arthur.

"Someone lied."

Arthur swallowed.

"About what?"

"About everything."

Admiral Reed walked toward the fireplace.

His expression was cold.

"If Daniel returned twelve years ago..."

"...then the official timeline is false."

Michael nodded.

"Eleanor wasn't alone when she died."

"No."

Reed looked at him.

"She wasn't."

Victoria stood slowly.

Her voice was barely audible.

"I remember that night."

Everyone turned.

Arthur looked at his youngest daughter.

"You were fifteen."

She nodded.

"I remember hearing voices."

"Whose?"

Victoria looked toward the old staircase.

"My mother's."

"And a man."

The room became still.

Arthur stepped closer.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Victoria laughed bitterly.

"Because I was afraid."

"Of me?"

She looked at him.

"No."

"Of what would happen if I told the truth."

Twelve Years Earlier

Ashford Manor had been covered in rain.

The night Eleanor died.

Victoria had been studying upstairs when she heard shouting.

Not an argument.

A confrontation.

She quietly walked down the hallway.

The voices came from Eleanor's study.

She stopped outside the door.

Her mother's voice was angry.

"You can't stay."

A man's voice answered.

"I came back for my daughter."

Victoria froze.

Her daughter?

Who was he talking about?

Eleanor whispered,

"Daniel, you don't understand."

"I have been running for years."

"I know."

"They'll kill you."

"They already tried."

Silence.

Then—

A crash.

Victoria remembered seeing the door slightly open.

Inside...

A man stood beside the desk.

Older than the photograph.

Exhausted.

Bleeding.

But alive.

Daniel Carter.

He looked toward the door.

Their eyes met.

For one second...

Victoria thought he looked exactly like Celeste.

Then Eleanor pulled the door closed.

And Victoria ran.

Present day.

Arthur struggled to breathe.

"You saw him."

Victoria nodded.

"Yes."

"And you said nothing?"

She looked down.

"I thought..."

Her voice broke.

"I thought he was the reason Mom was dying."

Celeste closed her eyes.

Her sister hadn't known.

She had been a frightened teenager trapped inside a family full of secrets.

Michael Lawson spoke quietly.

"Daniel came to Eleanor because he had discovered something."

"What?"

Michael looked toward the dark window.

"The Phoenix Circle had infiltrated Ashford Global."

Arthur stiffened.

"What does my company have to do with intelligence operations?"

Michael answered:

"Everything."

He walked to the bookshelf.

Pulled out an old financial ledger.

"Eleanor found irregular transactions."

"She thought someone was stealing from Ashford Global."

"But the truth was worse."

He opened the ledger.

"Your company was being used as a financial pipeline."

"For what?"

"Operations."

"Illegal operations."

Arthur stared at the numbers.

Billions.

Moved through hidden accounts.

Political donations.

Military contracts.

Private security companies.

All connected.

"This was happening under my name."

Michael nodded.

"Yes."

Arthur's face hardened.

"And I didn't know."

"No."

"Because they needed you clean."

Everyone looked at him.

Michael continued.

"A respected billionaire businessman."

"A philanthropist."

"A public figure."

"The perfect cover."

Celeste looked at Daniel's blood report.

"If Daniel came here to warn Mom..."

"...who attacked him?"

Michael hesitated.

That hesitation said everything.

Arthur noticed.

"You know."

Michael looked away.

"I suspect."

"Who?"

Before Michael could answer—

The mansion lights went out.

Every single one.

Federal agents immediately moved.

"Stay where you are!"

Weapons were drawn.

Emergency lights activated.

The library glowed red.

Then every screen in the room turned on.

The television.

The security monitors.

The laptops.

All displaying the same image.

A man sitting in darkness.

Older.

Gray hair.

Calm expression.

Everyone froze.

Because they recognized him.

Daniel Carter.

Alive.

Arthur stepped closer.

"Daniel?"

The image smiled faintly.

"No."

The voice was different.

Deeper.

Colder.

"This isn't Daniel."

Celeste stared.

"Then who are you?"

The man leaned toward the camera.

"My name is Nathaniel Cross."

Victoria went pale.

The man who had trained her.

The man she trusted.

The man she thought was dead.

Cross continued.

"Your father believed he could destroy the Phoenix Circle."

"He was wrong."

Admiral Reed raised his weapon toward the screen.

"Where is Daniel?"

Cross smiled.

"Still alive."

A pause.

"But not for long."

Celeste stepped forward.

"What do you want?"

Cross looked directly into the camera.

Not at Reed.

Not at Arthur.

At Celeste.

"You."

Silence.

"You were never the daughter they erased."

"You were the daughter they created."

Celeste frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Cross smiled.

"Eleanor never hid you because she was ashamed."

"She hid you because she knew what you were."

The screen flickered.

A document appeared.

A file.

Her name.

PROJECT PHOENIX — SUBJECT CELESTE

Her heart stopped.

"No..."

Cross continued.

"Your father was the greatest operative we ever had."

"Your mother was the smartest woman I ever met."

"And you..."

A pause.

"...were their final experiment."

Arthur stepped forward.

"She's my daughter."

Cross looked at him.

"Yes."

"And that's why you were useful."

Arthur froze.

"What?"

Cross smiled.

"You raised her."

"You taught her compassion."

"You gave her a normal life."

"You made her human."

The room became silent.

Then Cross spoke the sentence that shattered Celeste's world.

"But you never knew..."

"...your daughter was selected before she was born."

The screen went black.

The lights returned.

No one moved.

Because every person in that room now had the same terrifying question.

May you like

Was Celeste Ashford a survivor...

or was she the Phoenix Circle's greatest creation?
