Chapter 9 - The Truth Behind the Disappearance

For several seconds...
Charlotte could not move.
The man standing in front of her was someone she had mourned.
Someone whose death she had accepted.
Someone she buried in her heart years ago.
Richard Vale looked older.
His hair had turned gray.
His face carried years of regret.
But his eyes were the same.
The same eyes Charlotte remembered from childhood.
“Charlotte.”
Her name sounded different when he said it.
Like he had been waiting years to say it.
She stepped backward.
“No.”
Richard’s expression broke.
“I know.”
“No.”
Her voice became stronger.
“You don’t get to appear after eight years and say my name like nothing happened.”
Daniel looked away.
He knew this moment belonged to them.
Charlotte walked closer.
“You let me believe you were dead.”
Richard lowered his head.
“Yes.”
“You let me think I lost both parents.”
“Yes.”
“You let Adrian Cross destroy my life.”
Richard closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
The honesty hurt more than an excuse.
Charlotte’s anger grew.
“Why?”
Silence.
Then Richard answered.
“Because I was trying to keep you alive.”
Charlotte laughed bitterly.
“Alive?”
She pointed around the mansion.
“You abandoned me.”
“I protected you.”
“You disappeared.”
“I had to.”
“You left me alone.”
Richard looked at her.
“And if I stayed…”
A pause.
“They would have killed you too.”
The room became silent.
Charlotte wanted to reject it.
She wanted to call it another lie.
But something in his voice stopped her.
Fear.
Not for himself.
For her.
“What happened?”
Richard slowly walked toward the table.
He placed a small black box down.
“This is why I disappeared.”
Charlotte stared.
“What is it?”
“The reason your mother died.”
Her expression changed.
Richard opened the box.
Inside was a single flash drive.
Charlotte looked at him.
“What is this?”
“Everything.”
They moved to the hidden archive beneath the mansion.
Richard stood among the files he created years ago.
“I knew someone was trying to take Solmere.”
Charlotte crossed her arms.
“Adrian.”
Richard shook his head.
“No.”
“Then who?”
Richard looked at her.
“The person above him.”
Charlotte already knew the answer.
But hearing it was different.
“Who?”
Richard took a breath.
“The Vale family itself.”
Charlotte frowned.
“What?”
“There was another branch of the family.”
Daniel looked surprised.
Richard continued.
“They believed your mother and I had no right to control the empire.”
Charlotte listened carefully.
“They wanted Solmere.”
“Why?”
“Because Solmere was never just a hotel.”
Richard opened an old document.
Inside were records of hidden assets.
International investments.
Private foundations.
A network worth billions.
“The person controlling everything believed your family name belonged to them.”
Charlotte looked at the documents.
“Who?”
Richard hesitated.
Then said:
“Your uncle.”
Charlotte froze.
“My uncle died years ago.”
Richard shook his head.
“No.”
A pause.
“He disappeared.”
The same word.
The same pattern.
Another person erased from history.
Charlotte felt a cold realization.
Her entire family story had been rewritten.
Richard continued.
“Your uncle created the organization behind Adrian.”
“Aurelius?”
“No.”
He looked at her.
“The organization has another name.”
Charlotte waited.
Richard whispered:
“Blackthorne.”
The name carried weight.
Danger.
Power.
A hidden empire operating behind the Solmere Empire.
Charlotte looked at the flash drive.
“What is on this?”
Richard answered:
“The evidence.”
“Against Blackthorne?”
“Yes.”
“And Adrian?”
“Yes.”
“And you?”
Richard looked down.
“Especially me.”
Charlotte frowned.
“What?”
Richard’s voice became quiet.
“I made mistakes.”
He looked at his daughter.
“Terrible mistakes.”
The door suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
Ethan stood there.
His face was pale.
“Charlotte.”
She immediately knew something happened.
“What?”
He held up his phone.
“The documents you gave me…”
“What about them?”
“They were copied.”
Charlotte’s expression changed.
“By who?”
Ethan looked at Richard.
Then at Charlotte.
“The leak came from inside your team.”
Silence.
Charlotte slowly turned.
Because she realized something terrifying.
The enemy was not just watching her.
The enemy was standing beside her.
And before she could discover who...
her phone received a message.
One sentence.
You finally found your father. Now find the person who betrayed you.
Charlotte stared at the screen.
Because the war had changed.
May you like
It was no longer about reclaiming an empire.
It was about finding out who she could still trust.
