Chapter 4 - The Secret Hidden in the Shadows

For three years, Adrian Cross believed he had buried the past.
He believed Charlotte Vale would never return.
He believed the evidence against him was destroyed.
He believed the Solmere Empire belonged to him.
But as Charlotte walked away from the boardroom, Adrian realized one terrifying truth.
He had underestimated the woman he tried to erase.
The executives remained frozen after Charlotte left.
Nobody wanted to speak first.
Because everyone in that room understood what had just happened.
The balance of power had changed.
Evelyn Hart slowly looked at Adrian.
“What did she mean?”
Adrian did not answer.
“What did she mean about her mother’s death?”
His silence was enough.
The executives exchanged nervous looks.
Adrian finally turned around.
“Everyone leaves.”
Nobody moved.
His voice became sharper.
“I said leave.”
The board members quickly stood.
Within seconds, the room emptied.
Only Adrian and Evelyn remained.
Evelyn closed the door.
“You never told me she knew.”
Adrian stared through the glass wall.
“She didn’t.”
“She does now.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“That recording was a bluff.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“You don’t believe that.”
For the first time in years...
Adrian looked uncertain.
Because Charlotte had never been reckless.
If she claimed to have evidence...
she probably had it.
“She was always smarter than people realized,” Adrian said quietly.
Evelyn frowned.
“You sound afraid.”
Adrian turned.
“I sound realistic.”
A long silence followed.
Then Evelyn asked the question neither of them wanted to say.
“What if she finds the original file?”
Adrian’s expression changed.
Because there was one thing Charlotte did not know.
One thing hidden deeper than the stolen company documents.
The original Solmere inheritance archive.
A private collection created by Charlotte’s mother.
Inside were records that could expose everything.
Including the truth behind her death.
Adrian walked toward the window.
“She won’t find it.”
Evelyn watched him.
“How can you be sure?”
“Because I made sure nobody could.”
Charlotte sat inside a quiet café across from the Solmere Hotel.
For the first time that day, she allowed herself to breathe.
The confrontation had gone exactly as planned.
Almost.
She expected Adrian to deny everything.
She expected the board to protect him.
But she did not expect fear.
She saw it.
A small moment.
A single second.
When she mentioned her mother’s death.
Adrian was afraid.
And that meant Charlotte had finally found the weakness.
Her phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
Unknown Number.
Charlotte opened it.
A photograph appeared.
Her mother’s old office.
The private study inside the Vale family mansion.
A room that had been sealed after her death.
Below the image were four words:
"You are looking wrong."
Charlotte stared at the screen.
Then another message arrived.
"The truth was never inside the company."
Her heart slowed.
Because whoever sent this knew something.
Something impossible.
Only a few people knew about her mother’s private study.
Charlotte replied.
Who are you?
The answer came immediately.
Someone who failed your mother.
Charlotte looked around the café.
Everyone seemed normal.
But she knew better.
Secrets always had witnesses.
She typed again.
Meet me.
The response appeared.
Tomorrow. Midnight. Old Vale Estate.
Charlotte froze.
The Vale Estate had been abandoned since her mother’s death.
Nobody went there.
Not even Charlotte.
Because that place held the memories she tried hardest to forget.
But now she understood.
The past she avoided...
was the same past that could save her future.
That night, Charlotte returned to her apartment.
She opened an old wooden box.
Inside were memories.
Photographs.
Letters.
And one item she had never been able to throw away.
A handwritten note from her mother.
Charlotte unfolded it carefully.
The ink had faded.
But the words remained.
"Charlotte, if anything happens to me, trust no one who tells you they are protecting you."
She read the sentence again.
And again.
Because for years, she believed those words were about grief.
Now she understood.
They were a warning.
Her mother knew.
She knew someone was coming for the Solmere Empire.
And she knew Charlotte would need to fight.
A sound interrupted her.
A notification.
A news alert appeared.
"Solmere Holdings Announces Emergency Leadership Meeting After Unexpected Appearance of Missing Heiress Charlotte Vale."
Charlotte smiled bitterly.
They were already moving.
Adrian was trying to control the story.
But Charlotte expected that.
What she did not expect...
was the next headline.
"Anonymous Sources Question Charlotte Vale’s Mental Stability."
Charlotte stared at the screen.
Then laughed softly.
The same strategy.
The same lies.
Three years later.
Still the same enemy.
But this time...
Charlotte was ready.
She picked up her phone.
One message was sent.
To her private investigator.
Find everything about Adrian Cross.
Then another.
Start with his secrets.
May you like
Because Charlotte did not need to destroy Adrian with anger.
She would destroy him with the truth.
