Chapter 11 - The Woman Who Held the Missing Piec

Charlotte returned to the Vale Estate before sunrise.
But she was not the same person who left.
She carried something heavier than evidence.
She carried a realization.
Someone had tried to kill Maria Bennett because Maria knew the truth.
And that meant one thing.
Charlotte was getting closer.
Too close.
Richard saw her expression.
“What happened?”
Charlotte placed Maria’s old identification card on the table.
Richard immediately recognized it.
His face changed.
“Where did you get this?”
“She found me.”
Richard went silent.
“She is dead.”
The words came quietly.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Another person lost.
Another secret buried.
Charlotte looked at her father.
“She said my mother was not the target.”
Richard froze.
“What?”
“She said I was.”
The room became silent.
Richard looked devastated.
Because he knew something.
Charlotte noticed.
“You knew.”
“No.”
“You knew someone wanted me.”
Richard looked away.
“That is why I disappeared.”
Charlotte’s anger returned.
“You keep saying that.”
She stepped closer.
“But you never tell me why.”
Richard finally broke.
“Because your mother discovered who was trying to take Solmere.”
“Who?”
Richard looked at her.
“I thought it was Blackthorne.”
“You thought?”
“Yes.”
Charlotte frowned.
“What changed?”
Richard answered:
“Your mother found evidence that Blackthorne was only a cover.”
Daniel looked confused.
“What do you mean?”
Richard opened an old file.
Inside was a photograph.
A group of people.
Executives.
Investors.
Family members.
Charlotte looked carefully.
Then she saw her mother.
Standing beside another woman.
The woman smiled.
Charlotte recognized her.
Her mother’s closest friend.
The woman who comforted Charlotte after her death.
The woman who helped arrange the funeral.
The woman everyone trusted.
Evelyn Hart.
Charlotte’s face changed.
“No.”
Richard nodded.
“Yes.”
“The board chairwoman?”
“Yes.”
Charlotte remembered.
Evelyn had acted supportive.
She had acted like an ally.
She had sat across from Charlotte in the boardroom.
Pretending she did not know the truth.
Richard continued.
“Your mother discovered Evelyn was connected to Blackthorne.”
Charlotte stared.
“But Adrian worked for her?”
“Yes.”
“And my father?”
Richard looked down.
“I was trying to expose her.”
A pause.
“But I failed.”
Later that day, Charlotte returned to Solmere.
She walked directly into Evelyn Hart’s office.
Evelyn looked surprised.
“Charlotte.”
No fear.
No panic.
Only a calm smile.
That bothered Charlotte.
Because people who were innocent were usually shocked.
Guilty people prepared.
“You knew my mother.”
Evelyn smiled.
“Of course.”
“You were her friend.”
“Yes.”
Charlotte placed the photograph on the desk.
Evelyn looked at it.
Nothing changed.
That was the first sign.
Charlotte watched carefully.
“You don’t seem surprised.”
Evelyn leaned back.
“Should I be?”
Charlotte said nothing.
Evelyn smiled.
“You came here looking for a villain.”
A pause.
“You found one.”
Charlotte’s eyes narrowed.
“Who?”
Evelyn looked directly at her.
“Your father.”
The room went silent.
Charlotte stared.
“You’re lying.”
“Am I?”
Evelyn opened a drawer.
She pulled out a document.
“I think you should see this.”
Charlotte took it.
Her hands became cold.
Because the document showed something impossible.
A transfer agreement.
Signed by Richard Vale.
Approving control of Solmere assets.
The date?
Three days before his disappearance.
Evelyn whispered:
“Your father didn’t lose the empire.”
She leaned closer.
“He sold it.”
Charlotte stared at the signature.
Her entire world shifted.
Because if the document was real...
May you like
then the person she spent years trying to save...
may have been the person who betrayed her first.
