Chapter 5 - The Woman Behind the Empire

The old Vale Estate stood on the edge of the city.
A forgotten monument to a family that once controlled everything.
The gates were covered in rust.
The gardens were overgrown.
The mansion looked abandoned.
But Charlotte knew better.
Places like this never truly died.
They only waited.
At exactly midnight, Charlotte stepped through the gates.
The air was cold.
The silence felt heavy.
She walked toward the mansion carrying a flashlight.
Every step brought back memories.
Her childhood.
Her mother’s voice.
The nights they spent discussing the future of the family.
Then came the night everything changed.
The night her mother died.
Charlotte entered the mansion.
The door opened easily.
Too easily.
She stopped.
Someone had been inside recently.
The dust on the floor had been disturbed.
The furniture had been moved.
Someone was searching.
Charlotte reached into her bag.
Not a weapon.
A small recorder.
Because she knew one thing.
People who hide secrets always leave evidence behind.
She entered her mother’s private study.
The room was exactly as she remembered.
Bookshelves.
Old paintings.
A large wooden desk.
But something felt wrong.
Charlotte walked toward the desk.
She remembered her mother sitting there.
Working late.
Writing documents.
Making decisions.
She opened the drawers.
Nothing.
Empty.
Too empty.
Then she noticed something.
A small scratch beneath the desk.
Charlotte touched it.
A hidden mechanism clicked.
A secret compartment opened.
Inside was a single envelope.
Her hands shook slightly.
Because the handwriting on the front belonged to her mother.
For Charlotte.
She opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Only one page.
But every word changed everything.
"My daughter,"
"If you are reading this, then Adrian Cross has already taken control."
Charlotte stopped breathing.
The letter continued.
"Do not trust the board. Do not trust the executives. The betrayal began before my death."
Charlotte felt her eyes burn.
Her mother knew.
She knew everything.
"The person who betrayed us is someone closer than you think."
Charlotte stared at that sentence.
Closer than you think.
Then the final line appeared.
"The person responsible for everything is not Adrian."
Charlotte froze.
The room became silent.
Because she had spent three years believing Adrian was the mastermind.
But her mother was saying something else.
Someone else was behind it.
Someone more powerful.
Someone Adrian answered to.
A sound came from behind her.
Charlotte turned quickly.
A man stood in the doorway.
Older.
Tired.
Holding his hands up.
“Charlotte.”
She recognized him.
Her mother’s former security chief.
Daniel Reeves.
A man who disappeared after her mother’s death.
Charlotte tightened her grip on the letter.
“You were alive.”
Daniel looked down.
“Yes.”
“Where were you?”
His expression filled with regret.
“Running.”
“From who?”
Daniel looked at the letter in her hand.
Then at Charlotte.
“From the people who killed your mother.”
The words hit harder than anything else.
Charlotte stepped closer.
“You knew?”
Daniel swallowed.
“I knew someone wanted her gone.”
“Who?”
He hesitated.
Because the answer was dangerous.
“Charlotte…”
“Who?”
Daniel finally spoke.
“The person who controls Adrian Cross.”
Charlotte’s heart raced.
“Name.”
Daniel looked toward the dark hallway.
Then whispered:
“Richard Vale.”
Charlotte froze.
Her father’s name.
A man she believed died years ago.
A man everyone told her was gone.
A man whose death was considered a tragic accident.
Daniel continued.
“Your father is alive.”
Charlotte stared.
Impossible.
Everything she knew about her family...
was a lie.
May you like
And somewhere in the darkness beyond the mansion...
someone had been waiting for her to discover the truth.
