Chapter 8 - The Betrayal Inside the House

Charlotte Vale had spent years believing betrayal came from strangers.
She was wrong.
The most dangerous betrayals always came from people who knew exactly where to hurt you.
As Adrian Cross left the executive office, Charlotte remained standing beside the window.
The city stretched beneath her.
Millions of people moving through their ordinary lives.
Unaware that inside the Solmere Empire...
a war for control had already begun.
She replayed Adrian’s final words.
"You found the first layer."
That sentence bothered her.
Not because it was a threat.
Because it sounded like a warning.
Adrian wanted her to believe she was chasing him.
But what if she was actually being led somewhere?
Charlotte picked up the Project Phoenix file.
She studied every page.
Every signature.
Every transaction.
Then she noticed something strange.
One name appeared repeatedly.
Not Adrian.
Not Victoria.
Not even her father.
A company.
Aurelius Strategic Holdings.
Charlotte frowned.
She had never heard of it.
Which meant it was exactly the kind of company powerful people used to hide behind.
She immediately called her investigator.
“Ethan.”
The phone connected.
“Charlotte.”
“I need everything on Aurelius Strategic Holdings.”
A pause.
“That name is not in public records.”
“I know.”
“That is not normal.”
“No.”
Charlotte looked toward Adrian’s office.
“It means someone worked very hard to erase it.”
Three hours later, Ethan sent the first report.
Charlotte opened it.
And immediately knew something was wrong.
The company existed.
But barely.
Created twelve years ago.
No employees.
No public headquarters.
No visible operations.
A ghost company.
But there was one detail.
One transaction.
A payment made eight years ago.
The exact month her father disappeared.
Charlotte stared at the screen.
Her father.
Aurelius.
Adrian.
Everything connected.
But she still needed proof.
Not suspicion.
Not theories.
Proof.
That evening, Charlotte returned to the Vale Estate.
Daniel Reeves was waiting.
“You found something.”
Charlotte placed the report on the table.
“Aurelius Strategic Holdings.”
Daniel’s face changed.
“You know that name?”
“Yes.”
His reaction told her everything.
“What is it?”
Daniel looked away.
“Your father’s private investment company.”
Charlotte froze.
“You said my father was investigating Adrian.”
“He was.”
“Then why was his company connected?”
Daniel remained silent.
Charlotte’s voice became colder.
“Daniel.”
He finally answered.
“Because your father was not only investigating Adrian.”
A pause.
“He was investigating himself.”
The words felt impossible.
“My father?”
Daniel nodded.
“Richard Vale created Aurelius years before Solmere became what it is today.”
Charlotte shook her head.
“No.”
“Charlotte—”
“No.”
Her voice cracked.
“My father built this empire with my mother.”
“Yes.”
“Then why hide something from her?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Because he believed someone inside the family was dangerous.”
Charlotte stared.
“Who?”
Daniel did not answer.
Because suddenly...
the lights went out.
The entire mansion fell into darkness.
Charlotte immediately moved.
Years of training.
Years of surviving.
She reached for her phone.
Daniel whispered:
“Someone followed you.”
A sound came from upstairs.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Careful.
Someone was inside.
Charlotte looked toward the hallway.
Then she heard a voice.
“Charlotte.”
Her entire body froze.
Because she knew that voice.
It was impossible.
A voice she had not heard in eight years.
“Dad?”
The footsteps stopped.
The figure stepped into the moonlight.
An older man.
Tired.
Changed.
But unmistakably familiar.
Richard Vale.
May you like
Charlotte stared.
Her father was alive.
