Chapter 2 - The First Crack in the Empire

The Solmere Hotel lobby remained frozen.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Everyone was waiting for Charlotte Vale to break.
They expected anger.
They expected tears.
They expected the embarrassed woman in cheap clothes to finally realize she had made a mistake and walk away.
But Charlotte did none of those things.
She simply stood there.
Calm.
Silent.
Watching the people around her reveal exactly who they were.
Because power did not always reveal itself through money.
Sometimes, it revealed itself through patience.
Victoria Laurent still held the confidence of someone who believed she had already won.
She released Charlotte’s arm and adjusted her white silk sleeve as if she had just removed a stain.
“Security.”
Her voice echoed through the lobby.
Two guards immediately approached.
Charlotte looked at them.
Neither man recognized her.
Neither man knew that their salaries were paid by the company she legally owned.
“Escort her out,” Victoria ordered.
The taller guard hesitated.
“Miss Laurent, should we contact management first?”
Victoria’s expression changed.
She hated hesitation.
“Do you know who I am?”
The guard lowered his eyes.
“Yes, Miss Laurent.”
“Then do what I said.”
The guards stepped toward Charlotte.
The crowd watched.
Phones began appearing.
Guests secretly recorded the scene.
A wealthy socialite humiliating a stranger inside the famous Solmere Hotel.
It was exactly the kind of scandal people loved.
But Charlotte noticed something else.
A man standing near the elevator.
Watching.
Not shocked.
Not confused.
Afraid.
His name was Marcus Bell.
The former legal director of the Solmere Empire.
And the moment Charlotte saw him...
she knew.
Someone inside the company still knew the truth.
Marcus looked away quickly.
But it was too late.
Charlotte had seen him.
“Marcus.”
The entire lobby went quiet.
The man froze.
Slowly, he turned.
Victoria frowned.
“You know him?”
Charlotte stared directly at Marcus.
“Three years ago, you were the person who reviewed my mother’s final ownership agreement.”
Marcus’s face lost color.
Nobody understood why.
But Charlotte did.
Because Marcus knew exactly who she was.
He had seen the original documents.
The ones Adrian Cross tried to hide.
The ones proving Charlotte Vale was the sole controlling heir of the Solmere Empire.
Victoria looked between them.
“Marcus?”
Her voice became suspicious.
“What is she talking about?”
Marcus opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because fear had trapped him.
Charlotte understood.
She knew why.
Adrian Cross had destroyed everyone who tried to expose him.
Employees who questioned him were fired.
Executives who resisted disappeared from the company.
Lawyers who investigated the financial records suddenly changed careers.
Marcus was not a coward.
He was someone who had watched what happened to people who stood against Adrian.
Charlotte stepped closer.
“You know who I am.”
Marcus looked at her.
His eyes filled with regret.
“Yes.”
A whisper moved through the crowd.
Victoria’s smile disappeared.
“What did you say?”
Marcus swallowed.
“I said…”
He looked at Charlotte.
“I know who she is.”
The lobby went silent.
Charlotte waited.
Then Marcus finally said the words nobody expected.
“Charlotte Vale.”
The name hit the room like an explosion.
Some guests gasped.
Others immediately searched their phones.
Charlotte Vale.
The missing heiress.
The daughter of billionaire businessman Richard Vale.
The woman who disappeared from public life after her mother’s mysterious death.
Victoria stared at Charlotte.
“No.”
Her voice became smaller.
“That’s impossible.”
Charlotte looked at her.
“Why?”
Victoria stepped backward.
“Because Charlotte Vale is not like this.”
A bitter smile appeared on Charlotte’s face.
“You mean she doesn’t look poor enough to humiliate?”
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew.
Victoria had judged her.
Everyone had.
Charlotte turned toward the elevator.
“I need to speak with the board.”
Victoria recovered.
“No.”
Charlotte stopped.
Victoria’s confidence slowly returned.
“You cannot just walk upstairs and claim ownership.”
Charlotte looked back.
“You’re right.”
A pause.
“I don’t need to claim something that already belongs to me.”
The elevator doors opened.
But before Charlotte could enter...
another voice came from behind.
“Charlotte.”
Everyone turned.
Adrian Cross stood at the entrance.
Perfectly dressed.
Calm.
Controlled.
The man who had spent three years pretending to protect her family.
He smiled.
But Charlotte saw through it.
Because she knew Adrian.
He only smiled when he was planning something.
“After all this time,” Adrian said.
“You finally came home.”
Charlotte stared at him.
“This was never your home, Adrian.”
The smile remained.
But his eyes changed.
“You look different.”
“So do you.”
Adrian walked closer.
“Less trusting.”
Charlotte answered quietly.
“More dangerous.”
For the first time...
Adrian looked uncomfortable.
Only for a second.
Then it disappeared.
“Come upstairs.”
Charlotte stepped into the elevator.
The doors closed.
And as they separated...
Adrian whispered something only he could hear.
“Welcome back, Charlotte.”
May you like
Then his expression became cold.
“Let’s see how long you survive.”
