Chapter 6 - The Father Who Disappeared

Charlotte Vale had spent three years searching for answers.
She searched through financial records.
Company documents.
Legal archives.
Private investigators.
Every path led back to one person.
Adrian Cross.
The man who betrayed her family.
The man who stole her inheritance.
The man who convinced the world that Charlotte Vale was nothing more than a broken daughter who could not accept reality.
But standing inside the abandoned Vale Estate...
Charlotte realized she had been looking at the wrong enemy.
Because the truth was much darker.
Adrian was not the beginning.
He was only a piece of the plan.
Charlotte stared at Daniel Reeves.
Her mother’s former security chief.
The man who disappeared the same night her family collapsed.
“Say it again.”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“Your father is alive.”
Charlotte laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was impossible.
“My father died eight years ago.”
“That is what everyone was told.”
Charlotte stepped closer.
“You were at the accident scene.”
Daniel nodded.
“I was.”
“You identified him.”
Daniel’s silence answered before his words did.
“I was told what to report.”
Charlotte felt a cold wave move through her.
“Who told you?”
Daniel looked around the mansion.
The fear in his eyes was real.
“Your father.”
The room became silent.
Charlotte stared at him.
“My father arranged his own disappearance?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Daniel walked toward the old fireplace.
“Because Richard Vale discovered something.”
“What?”
Daniel looked back.
“The Solmere Empire was never just a hotel company.”
Charlotte frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“Your family built something much bigger.”
He pointed toward the walls.
“Your mother and father created a private network of investments, foundations, and assets worth far more than the public knew.”
Charlotte slowly understood.
The Solmere Empire was only the visible part.
The real power was hidden.
Protected.
Unknown.
“And Adrian?”
Daniel answered.
“Adrian wanted access to it.”
Charlotte looked at the letter.
“But my mother knew.”
“Yes.”
“She knew Adrian betrayed us.”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t she stop him?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Because Adrian was not working alone.”
Charlotte remembered the final sentence.
The person responsible is not Adrian.
Her fingers tightened around the letter.
“Who was he working for?”
Daniel looked at her.
“I don’t know.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I know the person exists.”
“Then how?”
Daniel reached into his coat.
He removed a small black key.
Charlotte stared at it.
“What is that?”
“Something your mother left for you.”
She did not take it immediately.
“Why didn’t you give me this before?”
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Because I was afraid.”
Charlotte’s expression hardened.
“My mother trusted you.”
“I know.”
“And you disappeared.”
“I know.”
His voice broke slightly.
“I failed her.”
For a moment, Charlotte saw something she had not expected.
Regret.
Not guilt.
Real regret.
She took the key.
“What does it open?”
Daniel looked toward the mansion basement.
“The place nobody was supposed to find.”
Thirty minutes later, Charlotte stood beneath the Vale Estate.
The basement had been hidden behind a false wall.
A place that did not exist on any official blueprint.
The key opened an old steel door.
Inside was a room filled with files.
Thousands of documents.
Photographs.
Recordings.
Financial records.
Charlotte stared.
Her entire family history was hidden here.
Daniel walked behind her.
“Your mother created this room after she realized someone inside the company was betraying her.”
Charlotte opened the first file.
The name on the cover made her freeze.
Project Phoenix.
“What is this?”
Daniel answered quietly.
“The plan to protect the Vale legacy.”
Charlotte opened the document.
Inside was a list of names.
Executives.
Politicians.
Investors.
People connected to the Solmere Empire.
Then she saw one name circled in red.
Adrian Cross.
But underneath Adrian’s name...
was another.
A name Charlotte had never expected.
Richard Vale.
Her father.
Charlotte stared.
“That makes no sense.”
Daniel said nothing.
Because he knew.
Some truths were harder than lies.
Charlotte turned the page.
A photograph fell out.
A photograph of her father.
Alive.
Standing beside Adrian Cross.
And beside them...
was someone else.
Someone Charlotte recognized.
Victoria Laurent.
The socialite who humiliated her in the hotel lobby.
Charlotte’s eyes narrowed.

The enemy was closer than she thought.
Much closer.
