CHAPTER 9 — THE BILLIONAIRE STARTS INVESTIGATING

The photograph lay on the library table.

Everyone stared at it.

Emma Torres.

Standing beside Evelyn Sterling.

One day before Evelyn's death.

A photograph that should not exist.

A photograph that made no sense.

Because Emma had never remembered being there.

"I've never seen this picture before."

Her voice was quiet.

But nobody answered immediately.

That silence hurt more than an accusation.

Because for the first time, Emma felt the room looking at her differently.

Not as the woman who rescued Ethan.

Not as the person Evelyn trusted.

But as a possible piece of the mystery.

William picked up the photograph.

His expression was unreadable.

"Where was this found?"

The security guard cleared his throat.

"In the garden house."

"The abandoned one?"

"Yes, Mr. Sterling."

William looked toward Alexander.

"Who had access to that building?"

Alexander answered immediately.

"Only family members and senior staff."

Everyone became silent.

Because that list was small.

Very small.

Emma looked at Isabella.

Then at William.

Then at Alexander.

She suddenly understood.

Someone wanted them divided.

Someone wanted the people searching for the truth to start suspecting each other.

And it was working.

"I need everyone to leave."

William's voice was cold.

The security guards exchanged looks.

"Mr. Sterling?"

"I said everyone."

Slowly, the room emptied.

Within minutes, only William, Emma, Ethan, Alexander, and Isabella remained.

William placed the photograph face down.

Then he looked at Emma.

"I believe you."

The words surprised her.

"You do?"

William nodded.

"Because whoever created this wanted me to see it."

He tapped the photograph.

"If they wanted to expose you, they would have released it publicly."

Alexander nodded.

"They want something else."

Emma frowned.

"What?"

"Control."

Alexander looked at William.

"Someone is trying to make you doubt everyone around you."

William didn't answer.

Because he knew exactly what that meant.

For years, he had trusted the wrong people.

And now someone was using that weakness against him.

Emma looked at the photograph again.

"There is something strange."

Everyone turned.

"What?"

She pointed at the image.

"Look at Evelyn."

William leaned closer.

Emma continued.

"She looks worried."

Alexander studied the picture.

"And?"

"She isn't looking at the camera."

Emma pointed.

"She's looking at something behind me."

The room went quiet.

William took the photograph.

He examined it carefully.

Then he noticed.

In the background, near the trees...

A shadow.

A person standing there.

Almost hidden.

Alexander grabbed the photograph.

"Zoom in."

William's security team enhanced the image.

The quality was poor.

But enough.

A figure appeared.

A woman.

Standing near the garden.

Watching Emma and Evelyn.

William stared.

"No..."

Emma looked at him.

"Who is it?"

William didn't answer.

Because he recognized her.

The woman in the background was Victoria Sterling.

Victoria sat in her private office across Manhattan.

She watched the news reports spreading online.

Rumors.

Questions.

The Sterling family was beginning to crack.

Exactly as she expected.

Her assistant placed a coffee on the desk.

"Everything is prepared."

Victoria didn't look up.

"Good."

"What about Emma Torres?"

A small smile appeared.

"She is the easiest piece to remove."

The assistant hesitated.

"She seems loyal."

Victoria laughed softly.

"That's why she's dangerous."

She looked at an old photograph on her desk.

A photograph of Evelyn.

"People like Emma believe kindness protects them."

She touched the picture.

"They never understand that kindness is the first thing powerful people destroy."

Back at Sterling Manor, William finally opened the full investigation.

For the first time in eighteen years, he stopped protecting the Sterling name.

He started searching for the truth.

He called his private legal team.

He reopened old financial records.

He demanded every file connected to Project Phoenix.

And most importantly...

He ordered a complete investigation into Evelyn's death.

The decision shocked everyone.

Especially Isabella.

"You're reopening the case?"

William looked at her.

"Yes."

"After eighteen years?"

"Yes."

She studied him.

"You know what happens if the truth comes out."

William's expression didn't change.

"Then let it come out."

For the first time, Emma saw something different in William.

Not a billionaire.

Not a businessman.

A man who had finally decided he would rather lose everything than continue living a lie.

That evening, Emma returned to her small apartment.

Or what remained of it.

The police had already secured the area.

Her belongings were scattered.

Drawers opened.

Books thrown everywhere.

Someone had searched every corner.

But they missed something.

Behind an old framed picture of her mother...

Was the silver key.

The key Evelyn had given her.

Emma picked it up.

Her fingers trembled.

Why had Evelyn trusted her?

Why had she chosen a housekeeper?

She turned the key over.

For the first time, she noticed something engraved on the back.

A tiny symbol.

The same symbol from the basement wall.

The black circle.

Three lines.

Emma immediately called Alexander.

When he answered, his voice was serious.

"Did you find something?"

"Yes."

She sent him a picture.

Seconds passed.

Then silence.

"Alexander?"

His voice changed.

"Emma..."

"What?"

"Where did you get that key?"

"Evelyn gave it to me."

Another pause.

"Do you know what that symbol means?"

"No."

Alexander took a breath.

"It was created by a secret division inside Sterling Holdings."

Emma frowned.

"A division?"

"A group of people who controlled the company's darkest operations."

Her stomach tightened.

"Who belonged to it?"

Alexander answered quietly.

"Three people."

"Who?"

"Your employer."

A pause.

"William Sterling."

"His sister."

"Victoria Sterling."

Emma waited.

"And the third?"

Alexander's voice became lower.

"The person nobody ever suspected."

Before Emma could ask who, she heard a sound behind her.

A floorboard creaking.

Someone was inside her apartment.

Emma froze.

"Alexander..."

"Emma?"

"Someone is here."

The call remained open.

She slowly turned.

The apartment was dark.

Empty.

Or so it seemed.

Then a voice came from the hallway.

"You really should have listened."

Emma's blood went cold.

A figure stepped into the light.

Not Victoria.

Not Isabella.

Not a stranger.

Someone she knew.

Someone who had worked beside her for years.

Someone who had been invisible just like her.

The person smiled.

"After all this time..."

"You still don't understand why Evelyn chose you."

Emma couldn't speak.

Because standing in front of her was the last person she expected.

May you like

Her fellow housekeeper.

Maria Collins.
