CHAPTER 10 — THE EVIDENCE BURIED UNDER STERLING MANOR

The apartment became completely silent.
Emma Torres stared at the woman standing in front of her.
Maria Collins.
Her coworker.
Her friend.
The person who had brought her coffee during long nights cleaning Sterling Manor.
The woman who had listened when Emma talked about Ethan.
The woman who had cried with her when Evelyn died.
Maria.
The same woman who was now standing in the darkness of her apartment.
Knowing about the key.
Knowing about Evelyn.
Knowing more than she ever admitted.
"Maria..."
Emma's voice trembled.
"Why are you here?"
Maria didn't answer immediately.
She looked around the apartment.
At the broken furniture.
The scattered books.
The evidence of the search.
Then she looked back at Emma.
"Because they are getting closer."
Emma stepped backward.
"Who?"
Maria's expression changed.
"Everyone."
The answer made no sense.
"Everyone?"
Maria nodded.
"You think this is about Victoria."
A pause.
"You think this is about Isabella."
Another pause.
"But you still haven't realized the biggest secret."
Emma tightened her grip around the phone.
Alexander was still listening.
"Maria, what are you talking about?"
The woman looked at the key.
"Evelyn didn't choose you because you were trustworthy."
Emma frowned.
"Then why?"
Maria whispered:
"Because you were already connected to the Sterling family."
The room stopped spinning.
"What?"
Maria walked closer.
"Eight years ago, Evelyn found something."
Emma stared.
"What?"
"A file."
Maria's eyes became filled with sadness.
"A file that proved someone had been hiding the truth about your past."
Emma felt confused.
"My past?"
Maria nodded.
"You weren't just a housekeeper, Emma."
A long silence.
"You were the reason Evelyn started investigating."
Back at Sterling Manor, William Sterling sat alone in his office.
The same office that had been destroyed hours earlier.
The same room where someone had stolen Project Phoenix.
But now William wasn't looking at the missing files.
He was looking at the one thing left behind.
A small piece of paper hidden inside the drawer.
A message written eighteen years ago.
One he had never seen.
One that had been placed there by Evelyn.
His hands shook as he unfolded it.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
William,
If you are reading this, then I failed to protect our family.
His eyes filled.
He continued.
But before you blame Alexander, before you blame yourself, remember this: the person who destroyed us is not the person you think.
William stopped.
A tear fell onto the paper.
Then he read the final sentence.
The truth is buried beneath the place where our family began.
William immediately stood.
"The foundation..."
Alexander entered the office.
"What?"
William looked at him.
"Evelyn hid something beneath the original Sterling property."
Alexander's expression changed.
"The old basement."
William nodded.
"The first house."
Emma had found the hidden room.
But they had never found the real secret.
The one beneath it.
Two hours later.
Sterling Manor's oldest basement was opened.
Not the hidden room where Ethan had been kept.
Another basement.
One nobody had entered in decades.
The original foundation beneath the mansion.
William, Alexander, Emma, and Isabella stood at the entrance.
Even Isabella looked nervous.
The air smelled ancient.
Dust.
Stone.
History.
"This place was sealed after the first renovation."
William explained.
"Why?"
Emma asked.
William looked down.
"Because my father said some things were better forgotten."
Alexander gave a bitter smile.
"Your family has always been good at that."
They walked deeper.
The walls were covered with old markings.
Dates.
Names.
Records from the beginning of Sterling Holdings.
Then Emma noticed something.
A symbol.
The black circle.
Three lines.
Everywhere.
"That symbol..."
Alexander nodded.
"The Phoenix Circle."
Emma looked at him.
"What is it?"
"The organization behind the hidden accounts."
William stopped.
"Not organization."
Everyone looked at him.
"Family."
The words were heavy.
"The Phoenix Circle wasn't created to steal from Sterling Holdings."
Emma frowned.
"Then what was it created for?"
William looked around the basement.
"To protect the Sterling empire."
Alexander shook his head.
"That's what they told themselves."
At the end of the basement was a massive steel door.
Old.
Rusty.
Locked.
But the silver key in Emma's hand reacted immediately.
The moment she brought it close...
The lock clicked.
Everyone froze.
Emma slowly inserted the key.
The door opened.
Inside was a hidden archive.
Not money.
Not weapons.
Documents.
Thousands of documents.
Photos.
Recordings.
Contracts.
Evidence.
A secret history of the Sterling family.
William walked inside.
His face changed with every step.
"This..."
He picked up a file.
"This is everything."
Emma opened another folder.
Inside were reports.
Private investigations.
Names.
Dates.
One document caught her attention.
She picked it up.
Her hands immediately froze.
Because the name written at the top was hers.
EMMA TORRES — CONFIDENTIAL FILE
She couldn't breathe.
"Why is my name here?"
Everyone turned.
William took the file.
His expression changed.
"This can't be."
Emma opened it.
Inside was information about her childhood.
Her parents.
Her life.
Things nobody should know.
Then she saw a photograph.
A photograph of herself as a little girl.
Standing outside Sterling Manor.
Beside Evelyn.
But Emma had no memory of that day.
"Why don't I remember this?"
Alexander looked at the picture carefully.
Then whispered:
"Because someone wanted you to forget."
Emma looked at him.
"What does that mean?"
Before he could answer—
A sound echoed through the basement.
A door closing.
Everyone turned.
Someone had entered.
William reached for the security alarm.
Too late.
A voice came from the darkness.
"You finally found it."
The group froze.
A woman stepped into the light.
Victoria Sterling.
She smiled.
But this time...
There was no kindness.
No charity.
No mask.
"You spent years searching for the truth."
She looked at the archive.
"Now you finally found it."
William stepped forward.
"Victoria."
She smiled.
"Brother."
Emma stared.
"You knew about this place."
Victoria laughed softly.
"Of course I did."
She walked closer.
"I built half of it."
Alexander's expression hardened.
"Why?"
Victoria looked at him.
"Because someone had to protect the family."
William shook his head.
"No."
His voice became cold.
"You destroyed it."
Victoria looked at him.
"You still don't understand."
She pointed toward Emma.
"The girl you are protecting..."
Everyone looked at Emma.
Victoria continued:
"...is the reason Evelyn died."
The basement went silent.
Emma felt the world disappear.
"What?"
Victoria smiled.
"Ask yourself why Evelyn spent her final days protecting you."
A pause.
"Ask yourself why she left you the key."
Then Victoria revealed the final piece of evidence.
A document.
Old.
Signed by Evelyn.
She placed it on the table.
And said:
"The truth is..."
"Emma Torres is not a stranger to the Sterling family."
William picked up the document.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then his face turned pale.
Because the signature at the bottom belonged to Evelyn.
And the final line said:
"I leave my daughter in the care of William Sterling."
Nobody spoke.
Emma stared.
"Daughter?"
The word barely escaped her mouth.
May you like
Victoria smiled.
"Welcome home, Emma Sterling."
