CHAPTER 16 — THE FATHER WHO NEVER KNEW HIS DAUGHTER

The birth certificate slipped from Emma Torres' hands.

It landed on the cold basement floor.

But she barely heard the sound.

Because the world around her had changed again.

Not a granddaughter.

Not just an heir.

Not simply someone connected to the Sterling family.

A daughter.

William Sterling's daughter.

The billionaire she had worked for.

The man whose mansion she cleaned.

The man who looked at her every day without knowing the truth.

Her father.

"No..."

Emma shook her head.

"This is another lie."

Jonathan Pierce smiled faintly.

"Of course you would say that."

He stepped closer.

"After everything you've discovered, you still want to believe the truth is simple."

Emma stared at him.

"Why should I believe anything from you?"

"Because unlike Richard, unlike Victoria, unlike William..."

He paused.

"I have nothing left to lose."

The words frightened her.

Because desperate people were often the most dangerous.

Emma picked up the document.

She examined every detail.

The hospital.

The date.

The signatures.

Everything looked real.

But something bothered her.

"If this is true..."

She looked at Jonathan.

"Why reveal it now?"

A small smile appeared.

"Because now William is vulnerable."

Emma's expression hardened.

"So this is another game."

Jonathan didn't deny it.

"Everything in the Sterling family has always been a game."

He looked around the basement.

"Your mother learned that too late."

Emma's eyes narrowed.

"You knew my mother."

Jonathan became quiet.

"Yes."

"What happened to her?"

For the first time, his expression changed.

Not guilt.

Not sadness.

Regret.

"She was brilliant."

Emma waited.

"Clara Torres discovered something she was never supposed to find."

"The Phoenix Circle."

Jonathan nodded.

"Yes."

"And you?"

Silence.

The answer was obvious.

"You were part of it."

Jonathan looked away.

"I was."

Emma felt anger rise.

"You helped destroy her."

Jonathan looked back.

"No."

His voice became serious.

"I helped keep her alive."

Emma froze.

"What?"

Jonathan walked toward an old shelf.

He pulled out a small box.

Inside was a collection of photographs.

Not stolen.

Not hidden.

Preserved.

He handed one to Emma.

It showed Clara Torres.

Holding baby Emma.

Beside her...

Was William Sterling.

Younger.

Smiling.

Happy.

Emma stared.

"Why is he there?"

Jonathan sighed.

"Because twenty-five years ago, before William became the man everyone feared..."

"He was different."

Twenty-five years earlier.

William Sterling was not yet the billionaire everyone knew.

He was a young businessman.

Ambitious.

Determined.

But still human.

He met Clara Torres when she was working as a financial analyst for Sterling Holdings.

She wasn't impressed by his wealth.

She challenged him.

She questioned decisions.

She saw the person beneath the name.

And William fell in love.

But Richard Sterling hated the relationship.

To Richard, Clara was not a partner.

She was a threat.

Because she was intelligent.

Because she noticed things.

Because she discovered the Phoenix Circle.

When Clara became pregnant...

Richard saw the child as a weakness.

A weakness he could use.

Emma looked at Jonathan.

"So what happened?"

Jonathan's voice became quiet.

"Richard gave William an ultimatum."

"What?"

"Choose the company..."

A pause.

"Or choose Clara."

Emma already knew the answer.

"He chose the company."

Jonathan nodded.

"But he didn't know what Richard did afterward."

"What did he do?"

"Richard made Clara disappear."

Emma felt tears forming.

"And my mother?"

Jonathan looked down.

"She survived long enough to hide you."

Suddenly, footsteps echoed above them.

Emma turned.

Jonathan looked toward the stairs.

"Someone is coming."

"Who?"

Before he answered...

William appeared.

His face was filled with confusion.

And fear.

Because he had heard everything.

Every word.

Every truth.

Every secret.

"Emma..."

She looked at him.

Neither of them spoke.

Because there were no words big enough.

William slowly walked down the stairs.

His eyes moved toward the birth certificate.

Then toward the photograph.

Then back to Emma.

"Is it true?"

Emma couldn't answer.

Jonathan did.

"Yes."

William's face changed.

A man who had negotiated billion-dollar deals.

A man who faced powerful enemies.

A man who never showed weakness.

Broke.

"I had a daughter."

His voice was barely audible.

"And she was here."

His eyes filled.

"Every day."

Emma looked away.

She didn't know what to feel.

Anger?

Pain?

Relief?

Twenty-five years of questions had finally been answered.

But the answer hurt.

William stepped closer.

"I should have known."

Emma looked at him.

"How?"

"You looked like her."

A tear moved down his face.

"Evelyn knew."

He looked toward the ceiling.

"She knew and protected you."

Emma's voice was quiet.

"Why didn't she tell you?"

William closed his eyes.

"Because she knew I would choose you."

A pause.

"And she knew Richard would destroy you if he found out."

Jonathan watched them silently.

For a moment, it seemed like the truth had finally brought the family together.

But then...

A gunshot echoed through the mansion.

Everyone froze.

Another shot.

Closer.

William immediately moved toward Emma.

"Stay behind me."

Security alarms began screaming.

Jonathan looked toward the basement entrance.

His face changed.

"They found us."

Emma looked at him.

"Who?"

Jonathan whispered:

"The people who are still loyal to Richard."

Upstairs, chaos erupted.

Security guards rushed through the halls.

Windows shattered.

The mansion lights flickered.

Someone had attacked Sterling Manor.

Not with threats.

Not with lawsuits.

With force.

Alexander rushed into the basement.

"William!"

He stopped when he saw Emma.

Then Jonathan.

His expression changed.

"What happened?"

William looked at him.

"Everything."

A pause.

"Emma is my daughter."

Alexander froze.

But there was no time for questions.

Because the basement door exploded open.

A group of armed men entered.

At the front stood a familiar face.

Victoria Sterling.

Everyone froze.

William stared.

"Victoria?"

She looked exhausted.

Not victorious.

Afraid.

"You need to listen to me."

Alexander stepped forward.

"You brought them here."

Victoria shook her head.

"No."

She looked toward the attackers.

"They are not mine."

A pause.

"They belong to Richard."

Silence.

Victoria looked at Emma.

"He knows the truth now."

Emma tightened her fists.

"What truth?"

Victoria's eyes filled with fear.

"The truth that you are not just William's daughter."

Everyone became silent.

"What does that mean?"

Victoria whispered:

"Richard didn't hide you because you were his enemy."

A pause.

"He hid you because you were the only person who could destroy him."

The attackers moved closer.

Victoria continued:

"Emma..."

"You are the only legal owner of the original Sterling empire."

William looked shocked.

"What?"

Victoria nodded.

"Richard created the company using stolen assets."

She looked at Emma.

"But Clara discovered the original ownership documents."

A pause.

"Those documents are tied to your identity."

Emma stared.

"Where are they?"

Victoria looked toward the old basement.

"They were hidden here."

Everyone looked around.

"But not in this archive."

Victoria whispered:

"The real secret is beneath the first secret."

Then the lights went out.

Complete darkness.

And in the silence...

A voice came through the mansion speakers.

An old man's voice.

Calm.

Powerful.

Familiar.

"Hello, Emma."

Everyone froze.

Richard Sterling.

Alive.

Watching.

"I have waited twenty-five years to meet my daughter."

A pause.

"And now..."

The voice became colder.

"She will finally choose who deserves to survive."

The speakers went silent.

May you like

Emma looked around the darkness.

Because the final battle had begun.
