CHAPTER 13 — ISABELLA’S LAST ATTEMPT TO ESCAPE

The video screen went black.
But Richard Sterling’s words remained.
"You are the last surviving heir of Sterling Holdings."
Nobody in the room moved.
The silence was heavier than any accusation.
Emma Torres stared at the frozen screen.
She felt like she was watching someone else's life.
A stranger's story.
A stranger's secrets.
But the name on the screen was hers.
Her entire life had been a carefully constructed lie.
The woman she believed was her mother wasn't her biological mother.
The family she thought she lost had hidden the truth.
The billionaire mansion she cleaned every day was connected to her bloodline.
And the man responsible for everything...
Was still alive.
William Sterling slowly sat down.
For the first time, Emma saw him look old.
Not powerful.
Not untouchable.
Just a father who had spent his entire life chasing success while losing the people who mattered.
"All these years..."
His voice cracked.
"My father knew."
Alexander nodded.
"Yes."
"He knew about Emma?"
"Yes."
William looked at Emma.
"Then why didn't he take her?"
Nobody answered.
Because the answer was terrifying.
Richard Sterling didn't want Emma protected.
He wanted her hidden.
Ethan sat beside Emma.
"Miss Emma..."
She looked at him.
"Yes?"
"Does this mean you're leaving?"
The question surprised her.
"No."
"But you're rich now."
Emma smiled sadly.
"Ethan, money doesn't change who someone is."
The boy looked at her.
"Good."
A small smile appeared.
"Because you're still Miss Emma."
For the first time that night, Emma laughed softly.
A real laugh.
And everyone noticed.
The girl who had been treated as invisible had become the person holding the entire Sterling family's future.
But someone else was running out of time.
Isabella Sterling.
She stood alone in her bedroom.
A suitcase was open on the bed.
Inside were documents.
Cash.
A passport.
She had spent months preparing for this possibility.
Because Isabella always had an escape plan.
She wasn't naive.
She knew powerful families didn't forgive betrayal.
Especially when secrets were exposed.
She looked at herself in the mirror.
The woman staring back was different.
Not the glamorous wife from magazine covers.
Not the woman smiling beside William at charity events.
Just Isabella.
A woman who had made terrible choices.
A woman who had spent years trying to survive.
Her phone rang.
She answered.
"Where are you?"
Victoria's voice came through.
Isabella's face hardened.
"I should ask you the same question."
"You need to leave."
Isabella froze.
"Why?"
"Because William knows too much."
A pause.
"And when Richard returns, everyone connected to this will become a target."
Isabella looked toward the door.
"You knew Richard was alive."
Silence.
That was the answer.
Isabella closed her eyes.
"You knew."
Victoria said nothing.
"You let me marry William while you were protecting him."
"No."
Victoria's voice became cold.
"I was protecting myself."
Isabella laughed bitterly.
"Of course."
A pause.
"You never cared about anyone."
Victoria replied:
"That is why I survived."
Before Isabella could leave...
A voice came from behind her.
"Leaving already?"
She turned.
William stood in the doorway.
Her face changed.
"William."
He looked at the suitcase.
"Where were you planning to go?"
Isabella didn't answer.
The billionaire stepped inside.
"I spent months believing you were my second chance."
His voice was quiet.
"But you were a mission."
Isabella looked down.
"At first."
William stared.
"At first?"
She swallowed.
"Things changed."
"When?"
She looked at him.
"When Ethan called me Mom."
The confession surprised him.
Isabella continued.
"I never expected to care about him."
Her voice became emotional.
"I never expected to care about you."
William looked away.
Pain.
Anger.
Confusion.
All mixed together.
"Then why did you lock him away?"
Isabella closed her eyes.
"Because Richard found out."
William froze.
"What?"
"He knew Ethan had found Evelyn's letter."
She looked at him.
"He threatened me."
"With what?"
Isabella whispered:
"Your son's life."
The room went silent.
William stared.
"You're saying Richard ordered this?"
Isabella nodded.
"He told me if Ethan spoke, he would expose everything."
William's expression changed.
The anger remained.
But something else appeared.
Understanding.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Isabella laughed sadly.
"Because every person who tried to tell you the truth ended up destroyed."
Meanwhile...
Emma, Alexander, and William were analyzing Richard's video.
Something bothered Alexander.
"The recording."
Emma looked at him.
"What about it?"
"Richard wanted us to find it."
William frowned.
"Why?"
Alexander pointed at the screen.
"He mentioned Emma specifically."
A pause.
"That means this wasn't hidden from him."
Emma looked confused.
"Then what was it?"
"A message."
William stood.
"A trap?"
Alexander nodded.
"Maybe."
Suddenly, the mansion's security system activated.
Again.
Everyone froze.
A security guard rushed in.
"Mr. Sterling!"
William turned.
"What happened?"
The guard looked terrified.
"We lost contact with the east wing."
"Why?"
"Because someone disabled the cameras."
Alexander immediately stood.
"Richard."
William looked toward the hallway.
"No."
Emma noticed something.
"What?"
William looked at her.
"That is where my father's old private office was."
Everyone moved.
They reached the east wing.
The door was open.
Inside, everything had been untouched.
Except one thing.
A chair.
Placed in the center of the room.
And sitting on the chair...
Was a small wooden box.
Emma recognized it immediately.
The same symbol was carved into the lid.
The Phoenix Circle.
William slowly opened it.
Inside was a stack of old photographs.
The first showed Richard Sterling.
The second showed Victoria.
The third showed Alexander.
The fourth showed Evelyn.
Then Emma saw the last photograph.
Her breath stopped.
It was a picture of her as a baby.
Held by a man.
A man she had never seen.
On the back of the photo was a handwritten message.
"The daughter belongs to the family that survives."
Emma felt sick.
Then another note fell out.
Only four words.
"COME FIND YOUR FATHER."
Alexander looked at William.
"He wants her to go."
William shook his head.
"Absolutely not."
But Emma looked at the photograph.
At the man holding her.
Her father.
The person she had spent her entire life believing was gone.
She whispered:
"I need answers."
William looked at her.
"Emma, this is exactly what he wants."
She looked back.
"I know."
A pause.
"But if I don't go..."
Her eyes hardened.
"He will keep controlling everyone."
At that moment, every screen inside Sterling Manor turned on.
A video appeared.
Richard Sterling.
Older now.
Sitting somewhere unknown.
Smiling.
Everyone froze.
"Hello, William."
The old man's voice filled the mansion.
"I see you finally found my granddaughter."
Emma's heart stopped.
Granddaughter.
Richard continued:
"You spent years protecting a family secret."
A smile.
"Now she knows."
He looked directly into the camera.
"Emma."
She stepped closer.
"You want to know who you are?"
A pause.
"Come alone."
William immediately shouted:
"No."
Richard ignored him.
"Come alone..."
"Or the truth about your father's death will disappear forever."
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
Because Richard Sterling had just made his move.
May you like
And this time...
He wasn't hiding.
