CHAPTER 19 — THE MAN WHO SACRIFICED EVERYTHING

The message remained on every screen.

"Congratulations. You finally found the traitor."

Nobody spoke.

The accusation against Alexander Vale hung over Sterling Manor like a storm cloud.

The man who had returned from the dead.

The man who helped Emma uncover the basement.

The man who exposed Richard Sterling.

The man who claimed he was betrayed.

Was he actually the person behind everything?

Emma looked at Alexander.

And for the first time since meeting him...

She didn't know what to believe.

William stood between them.

"Alexander."

His voice was controlled.

But everyone could hear the anger underneath.

"Explain."

Alexander didn't answer.

His eyes remained fixed on the screen.

On his own name.

On evidence designed to destroy him.

Finally, he whispered:

"It's not real."

William's expression hardened.

"That's what every guilty person says."

The words hurt.

Because they came from someone who had once been his closest friend.

Alexander looked at him.

"You think I wanted this?"

"You disappeared for twenty-five years."

"Because I was trying to survive."

William stepped closer.

"Or because you were hiding."

Silence.

Emma watched both men.

Two people carrying decades of pain.

Two people who had spent years blaming each other.

But something felt wrong.

Too easy.

The evidence appeared exactly when they were about to uncover the final secret.

Someone wanted them to turn against Alexander.

Someone wanted them divided.

Then Jonathan Pierce spoke.

"Wait."

Everyone looked at him.

The former attorney studied the document carefully.

"This is fake."

William turned.

"You can tell?"

Jonathan nodded.

"Yes."

He pointed at the screen.

"The formatting."

"The encryption style."

"The authorization code."

He looked at Alexander.

"This wasn't created by the Phoenix Circle."

A pause.

"It was created by someone who wants us to believe it was."

Emma looked relieved.

"So someone framed him."

Jonathan nodded.

"Yes."

William looked around.

"But who?"

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew the terrifying truth.

The person responsible was still close.

Still watching.

Still controlling the game.

Alexander finally spoke.

"I know who."

Everyone turned.

His face was filled with exhaustion.

Not fear.

Not guilt.

Pain.

"The reason Richard trusted me..."

A pause.

"Was because I was never his enemy."

William stared.

"What are you saying?"

Alexander walked toward the window.

"Twenty-five years ago, when Richard tried to destroy Clara..."

"I wasn't investigating him."

"I was working with him."

Everyone froze.

Emma felt her heart drop.

"You were?"

Alexander nodded.

"But not the way you think."

Twenty-five years earlier...

Alexander Vale was not Richard's partner.

He was his spy.

After discovering the Phoenix Circle, Alexander realized fighting Richard directly would be impossible.

Richard controlled everyone.

Judges.

Lawyers.

Executives.

Even the police.

So Alexander made a choice.

He pretended to join Richard.

He became someone Richard trusted.

Someone close enough to see everything.

His mission was simple:

Find evidence.

Expose the truth.

Bring Richard down.

But there was one thing Alexander never expected.

Richard discovered his plan.

And before Alexander could escape...

Richard destroyed his identity.

He made the world believe Alexander was a criminal.

A traitor.

A man who vanished.

Emma stared at him.

"Then why didn't you come back?"

Alexander looked at her.

"Because I couldn't."

"What do you mean?"

He reached into his jacket.

He removed an old photograph.

It showed Alexander.

Clara.

And Evelyn.

Together.

"They helped me disappear."

Emma looked shocked.

"My mother knew you?"

Alexander nodded.

"Clara was the bravest person I ever met."

He looked at the photograph.

"She knew if Richard found me, he would kill me."

A pause.

"So she created a plan."

"What plan?"

Alexander looked at Emma.

"The plan that created you."

William frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Alexander turned.

"Clara knew Richard would eventually search for the heir."

He looked at Emma.

"So she hid the one person who could legally destroy him."

Emma understood.

"Me."

Alexander nodded.

"Yes."

"You and your identity were the final weapon."

Suddenly, the lights flickered.

Everyone froze.

Then a voice came from the mansion speakers.

Richard.

Again.

But this time...

He sounded angry.

"You always were dramatic, Alexander."

Everyone turned toward the speakers.

Richard laughed.

"Twenty-five years later, and you still believe you won."

William shouted:

"Where are you?"

Richard ignored him.

"Emma."

She looked up.

"Do you know why everyone around you keeps protecting you?"

Silence.

"Because they know what you are."

Emma frowned.

"What?"

Richard's voice became colder.

"A mistake."

William immediately stepped forward.

"Don't listen to him."

But Richard continued.

"Your mother believed love could defeat power."

A pause.

"She was wrong."

Emma clenched her fists.

"You killed her."

Richard answered calmly:

"No."

Everyone froze.

"I saved her."

The room became silent.

"What?"

Richard continued:

"Your mother was going to expose everything."

"She was going to destroy Sterling Holdings."

"Destroy thousands of jobs."

"Destroy everything we built."

Emma's eyes filled with anger.

"You destroyed her because she threatened your empire."

Richard's voice softened.

"No."

A pause.

"I destroyed her because she threatened the truth."

The speakers suddenly went silent.

Then every screen changed.

A live video appeared.

Richard Sterling sitting in a dark room.

But beside him...

Was someone unexpected.

Someone Emma knew.

Someone she trusted.

Her face went pale.

"No..."

William looked at the screen.

"Isabella."

Isabella stood beside Richard.

But she wasn't smiling.

She wasn't calm.

She looked terrified.

Richard placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Your stepmother has something to tell you."

Emma stared.

"Isabella?"

The woman looked at the camera.

Tears filled her eyes.

"Emma..."

Her voice shook.

"I'm sorry."

William stepped forward.

"Isabella, what is happening?"

She looked at him.

"I tried to stop him."

Richard smiled.

"But she failed."

Emma felt sick.

"What did you do?"

Isabella closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

"The night Evelyn died..."

Everyone froze.

"I was there."

William's face changed.

"What?"

Isabella looked devastated.

"I saw what happened."

Silence.

"And I lied."

Richard smiled.

"Now we're getting close to the truth."

Emma stared at Isabella.

"Why?"

Isabella cried silently.

"Because I was afraid."

"Afraid of what?"

Isabella looked at Richard.

"He threatened Ethan."

William's expression changed.

Richard laughed.

"But that's not the only reason."

He looked directly at Emma.

"The real reason Isabella stayed silent..."

A pause.

"Is because she knows who killed Evelyn."

Everyone stopped breathing.

Emma whispered:

"Who?"

Richard smiled.

"The person standing closest to her."

The video froze.

The screen went black.

And the mansion fell silent.

Because the final secret was about to be revealed.

May you like

The person who killed Evelyn Sterling...

Was someone who had spent eighteen years pretending to protect her.
