CHAPTER 4 — THE BASEMENT ROOM THAT WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO EXIST

The photograph slipped from Ethan's fingers.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The entire Sterling Manor seemed frozen in time.

The billionaire family that had built an empire on wealth, influence, and carefully controlled appearances had just been confronted by something impossible.

A man who was supposed to be dead.

Standing in an old photograph.

Alive.

Emma Torres looked down at the picture again.

The edges were worn.

The paper was yellow with age.

But the faces were clear.

William Sterling stood in the center, much younger than he was now.

Beside him was Evelyn.

Her smile was genuine.

The kind of smile Emma remembered.

Warm.

Peaceful.

Happy.

But the third person in the photograph was the one who changed everything.

A tall man with dark hair.

A sharp jawline.

A familiar symbol on his watch.

The same black circle with three lines through it that Emma had seen carved into the hidden basement door.

The man Ethan claimed had visited him.

The man William believed was dead.

"Who is he?"

Emma finally asked.

Her voice broke the silence.

William didn't answer.

He just stared at the photograph.

His hands trembled slightly.

A reaction Emma had never seen from him before.

William Sterling was a man who faced hostile investors, lawsuits, and business wars without showing emotion.

But this photograph terrified him.

"William."

Isabella's voice came softly.

Almost like she was warning him.

He looked at her.

And for a moment, Emma saw something strange.

Not husband and wife.

Not lovers.

Enemies.

"You knew," William whispered.

Isabella's face remained calm.

"I knew something was wrong."

"No."

William stepped closer.

"You knew about him."

Silence.

That was the answer.

Emma felt a chill.

Isabella had known.

She had known about the hidden room.

She had known about Ethan.

And now it appeared she had known about this mysterious man too.

"Who is he?" Emma asked again.

William closed his eyes.

For a moment, he looked exhausted.

Then he finally spoke.

"His name was Alexander Vale."

Ethan looked up.

"Was?"

William stared at the photograph.

"Alexander was my best friend."

Emma frowned.

"Then why does Ethan say he saw him?"

William didn't answer.

Because the answer was written all over his face.

He didn't know.

Twenty years earlier.

Before the billions.

Before the skyscrapers.

Before the Sterling name became one of the most powerful in New York.

William Sterling was just a young businessman trying to build his first company.

And Alexander Vale was the person who helped him.

They were brothers in everything except blood.

They built their first real-estate project together.

They trusted each other.

Until the night everything changed.

The official story was simple.

Alexander betrayed William.

He stole company funds.

He disappeared.

Weeks later, his car was found at the bottom of a mountain road.

The police concluded he had died.

William buried his friend.

And moved on.

But there was one thing nobody knew.

Evelyn never believed Alexander was guilty.

"Your mother thought Alexander was innocent."

William's voice became quieter.

Ethan looked confused.

"My mom knew him?"

William nodded.

"She did."

Emma noticed something.

William wasn't just remembering the past.

He was reliving it.

"What happened between them?"

William looked away.

"That's complicated."

Isabella suddenly interrupted.

"William, maybe this isn't the conversation to have right now."

Emma looked at her.

"Why not?"

Isabella smiled coldly.

"Because some truths destroy families."

Emma looked around the room.

"Funny."

She held up the photograph.

"I thought lies did that."

Isabella's expression hardened.

For the first time, she looked at Emma like an enemy.

Not a servant.

Not someone beneath her.

A threat.

Later that night.

The Sterling family gathered in the private study.

The same room where William made billion-dollar decisions.

But tonight, business didn't matter.

His son sat beside him.

The letter from Evelyn rested on the desk.

Nobody had opened it yet.

Emma stood near the door.

She wasn't supposed to be part of this conversation.

She was just a housekeeper.

At least, that was what people believed.

But William looked at her.

"Stay."

Emma was surprised.

"Mr. Sterling?"

"You found my son."

He looked at Ethan.

"You protected him when I didn't."

His voice cracked slightly.

"You deserve to hear the truth."

Emma nodded.

William slowly picked up the envelope.

The handwriting immediately brought pain to his face.

"Evelyn wrote this three weeks before she died."

Ethan whispered:

"Why didn't you have it?"

William looked at his son.

"Because she hid it."

"From you?"

A painful silence.

"Yes."

Emma watched him carefully.

Why would a wife hide something from her husband before her death?

Unless...

She was afraid.

William opened the envelope.

Inside was a single folded letter.

He began reading.

At first, his expression was confused.

Then shocked.

Then devastated.

"What does it say?" Isabella asked.

William ignored her.

His eyes moved across the page.

Finally, he whispered:

"She knew."

Emma stepped closer.

"Knew what?"

William looked up.

His face was pale.

"She knew Alexander was alive."

Everyone froze.

Isabella looked away.

Emma noticed.

She wasn't surprised.

She already knew.

William continued reading.

"There is more."

His voice became weaker.

"Evelyn wrote that the person responsible for Alexander's disappearance was someone inside this house."

The room went silent.

Everyone looked around.

At each other.

The person who destroyed Alexander's life wasn't a stranger.

It was someone close.

Someone who had access to Sterling Manor.

Someone who knew the family.

Someone who had something to gain.

William turned the page.

Then stopped.

His eyes widened.

"What?"

Emma asked.

William slowly lowered the letter.

"There is a second page missing."

A cold feeling filled the room.

"Evelyn wrote that the evidence was hidden somewhere in the house."

Emma immediately thought about the basement.

The hidden room.

The sealed wall.

The symbol.

Then Ethan suddenly spoke.

Quietly.

"Mom knew."

Everyone turned.

"What did she know, Ethan?"

The boy looked terrified.

"Before she died..."

He swallowed.

"She told me never to trust the person who smiles the most."

Nobody breathed.

Because everyone knew who that described.

Isabella.

The woman who had smiled through everything.

The woman who had appeared perfect.

The woman who now stood silently in the corner.

But before anyone could accuse her—

The security alarm suddenly activated.

A loud siren echoed through the mansion.

William stood.

"What now?"

A security guard rushed into the room.

"Mr. Sterling."

He looked nervous.

"There has been an intrusion."

William's face darkened.

"Where?"

The guard hesitated.

Then answered:

"The basement."

Emma's heart stopped.

"The hidden basement?"

The guard nodded.

"Yes."

Everyone looked at each other.

Then the guard added:

"But that's not the worst part."

William stepped forward.

"What happened?"

The guard swallowed.

"The room was empty."

Emma felt confused.

"Empty?"

The guard nodded.

"Someone removed everything."

The hidden room.

The bed.

The food.

The evidence.

Everything.

Except one thing.

"What was left?" William asked.

The guard looked at Emma.

Then said:

"A message."

William's expression changed.

"What message?"

The guard handed him a small piece of paper.

William unfolded it.

And read the words written in black ink.

His face turned completely pale.

Because the message was not for him.

It was for Emma.

May you like

Three words.

"YOU ARE NEXT."
