CHAPTER 8 — THE MISSING MOTHER’S FINAL MESSAGE

The name echoed through Emma’s mind.

William Sterling’s own sister.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The person controlling the chaos surrounding Sterling Manor wasn't a stranger.

Not an outsider.

Not a business enemy.

It was family.

The very people William had trusted for decades.

Emma looked at William.

"Your sister?"

William didn't answer immediately.

His eyes remained fixed on the security footage.

The woman on the screen.

The woman watching them.

The woman who knew about the hidden basement.

The woman who knew about the key.

Finally, William whispered:

"Victoria."

The name carried weight.

Pain.

Regret.

A history nobody in the room understood.

"Victoria Sterling."

Alexander looked at him.

"You never told me she was involved."

William's expression hardened.

"Because she wasn't supposed to be."

Alexander gave a bitter laugh.

"That's what you said about everyone."

The words hit William.

Because they were true.

Everyone he trusted had betrayed him.

Victoria Sterling.

William's older sister.

The woman who had helped raise him after their parents died.

The woman who taught him everything about business.

The woman who stood beside him when he created Sterling Holdings.

To the public, Victoria was a philanthropist.

A respected woman who funded children's hospitals, donated millions to education programs, and appeared on magazine covers as one of New York's most influential women.

She had built a reputation around kindness.

But behind closed doors...

She was something else.

A strategist.

A manipulator.

A person who believed emotions were weaknesses.

Emma looked at the photograph again.

"How could she be connected to Alexander's disappearance?"

William walked toward the fireplace.

"Because Victoria knew everything."

"Everything about what?"

"The company."

He paused.

"And the secrets behind it."

Twenty years earlier.

When William and Alexander founded Sterling Holdings, Victoria controlled the financial side.

She managed investments.

Contracts.

Private accounts.

At first, nobody questioned her.

She was family.

But Alexander eventually discovered something strange.

Millions of dollars were being transferred through hidden accounts.

Money that belonged to the company.

Money that was disappearing.

He confronted Victoria.

And according to Alexander...

That was the last mistake he made.

"I found proof."

Alexander's voice was quiet.

"Victoria was moving money through offshore companies."

William looked at him.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Alexander stared.

"I tried."

A painful pause.

"But every time I tried to reach you, someone stopped me."

Emma frowned.

"Someone?"

Alexander nodded.

"Someone inside Sterling Manor."

The room became silent.

"Who?"

Alexander looked at William.

"That's the question you should have asked eighteen years ago."

William looked away.

Because deep down...

He already knew.

Meanwhile, Isabella Sterling stood alone in the east hallway.

For the first time since Emma met her, Isabella looked completely defeated.

No perfect smile.

No elegant confidence.

No carefully prepared words.

Just a woman carrying years of fear.

Emma found her there.

"You knew about Victoria."

Isabella didn't turn around.

"Yes."

"How long?"

A pause.

"Before I married William."

Emma was surprised.

"Then why marry him?"

Isabella looked at the old family portraits on the wall.

"Because I needed access."

The answer was brutally honest.

Emma stared.

"Access to what?"

"The truth."

Silence.

"I knew Evelyn was investigating something."

Isabella continued.

"I knew she was close to discovering who was stealing from Sterling Holdings."

Emma crossed her arms.

"And you thought marrying William would help you find answers?"

"No."

Isabella looked at her.

"I married William because Evelyn asked me to."

Emma froze.

"What?"

Isabella reached into her purse.

She removed a small envelope.

Old.

Worn.

Similar to Evelyn's letter.

"Evelyn gave me this two weeks before she died."

Emma stared.

"Why didn't you show William?"

Isabella looked away.

"Because the letter contained something dangerous."

"What?"

Isabella slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of Victoria Sterling.

Standing beside a man.

A man Emma recognized.

The same man from the basement.

Alexander.

But they weren't fighting.

They weren't enemies.

They were meeting secretly.

Emma's eyes widened.

"Victoria knew Alexander."

Isabella nodded.

"But that's not the worst part."

She handed Emma the photograph.

On the back was a handwritten message.

Emma read it.

And felt her blood turn cold.

"If anything happens to me, remember this: Alexander was not my enemy. He was my witness."

Back in the library, William listened as Isabella finally revealed everything.

The room felt like a courtroom.

Every secret was being dragged into the light.

"I never loved your money."

Isabella said quietly.

William looked at her.

"I know that now."

"I came into this family because Evelyn needed someone close enough to watch."

Emma looked surprised.

"She trusted you?"

Isabella gave a small, sad smile.

"She didn't trust me."

A pause.

"She trusted that I hated Victoria more."

William's expression changed.

"Why?"

Isabella looked down.

"Because Victoria destroyed my family too."

Nobody spoke.

"What do you mean?"

Isabella took a deep breath.

"My father worked for Sterling Holdings."

She looked at William.

"He discovered the hidden accounts."

Emma understood.

"Your father knew."

Isabella nodded.

"And Victoria made sure he stayed silent."

William closed his eyes.

Another victim.

Another life destroyed.

Another secret buried beneath the Sterling name.

Then Ethan spoke.

Everyone turned.

The boy was holding Evelyn's letter.

"I remember something."

Emma moved closer.

"What?"

Ethan looked scared.

"But I think it's important."

William knelt beside him.

"What do you remember, son?"

Ethan looked at his father.

"The night Mom died."

William froze.

"Ethan..."

"I was awake."

The room became silent.

"I heard Mom arguing with someone."

Emma felt a chill.

"Who?"

Ethan shook his head.

"I couldn't see."

"What did they say?"

The boy closed his eyes.

Trying to remember.

"Mom said..."

He swallowed.

"You can't take everything from us, Victoria."

Nobody moved.

Because Ethan had just confirmed the impossible.

Evelyn knew.

Evelyn confronted Victoria.

And that confrontation happened the night she died.

Suddenly, the library doors burst open.

A security guard rushed inside.

"Mr. Sterling!"

Everyone turned.

"We found something."

William stood.

"What?"

The guard looked nervous.

"Inside the old garden house."

Emma frowned.

"The garden house?"

The guard nodded.

"Someone was living there."

A pause.

"For months."

William's face changed.

"Who?"

The guard looked toward Emma.

"We don't know."

"Why are you looking at her?"

The guard swallowed.

"Because we found something belonging to Miss Torres."

Emma froze.

"My things?"

The guard nodded.

"A photograph."

"What photograph?"

The guard hesitated.

Then answered:

"A picture of you..."

He looked at William.

"...standing with Evelyn Sterling the day before she died."

Emma felt the room disappear around her.

Because she had never taken such a photograph.

She had never seen it before.

And yet...

Someone had created proof that she was involved.

Someone was trying to make the entire Sterling family believe one thing:

May you like

Emma Torres wasn't the person uncovering the secret.

She was part of it.
