CHAPTER 12 — ETHAN FINALLY SPEAKS

The name remained hanging in the air.

The founder of Sterling Holdings.

William Sterling's father.

A man everyone believed had died twenty-five years ago.

A man whose portrait hung proudly above the entrance hall.

A man whose legacy built the empire William inherited.

But according to Clara Torres...

He was alive.

And he was the person who started everything.

Emma stared at the letter in her hands.

Her fingers trembled.

She had spent her entire life believing her past was simple.

A loving family.

A tragic loss.

A quiet life.

Now she discovered everything had been carefully hidden from her.

Her mother had been murdered.

Her father was alive.

Her identity had been erased.

And the family she worked for was connected to all of it.

"How is this possible?"

Emma whispered.

William didn't answer.

Because he was asking himself the same question.

The founder of Sterling Holdings was named Richard Sterling.

To the public, Richard was a visionary.

A brilliant businessman.

The man who transformed a small construction company into one of the largest real-estate empires in America.

But inside the Sterling family...

Richard was something else.

A man who believed power mattered more than people.

A man who taught William one lesson:

"A Sterling never loses."

William remembered those words.

He remembered his father's cold eyes.

The endless pressure.

The impossible expectations.

But he never imagined Richard was capable of destroying lives.

"He's dead."

William finally said.

Everyone looked at him.

"Richard died twenty-five years ago."

Alexander shook his head.

"That's what everyone was told."

William looked at him.

"You think my father faked his death?"

"I know he did."

The room went silent.

Alexander walked toward the archive shelves.

He pulled out another file.

"This is what I found before I disappeared."

He opened it.

Inside were medical records.

Travel documents.

Photographs.

Richard Sterling.

In different countries.

Different names.

Different identities.

But always the same person.

Emma looked at William.

"Your father was alive this entire time?"

William stared at the documents.

His world was collapsing.

"My entire life..."

His voice broke.

"I built everything believing I was carrying on his legacy."

Alexander looked at him.

"You were."

A pause.

"You just didn't know what kind of legacy it was."

Suddenly, Ethan spoke.

"Grandfather."

Everyone turned.

The boy was standing near the table.

His face was pale.

But his voice was stronger than before.

William immediately moved toward him.

"Ethan?"

The child looked at the old documents.

"I saw him."

Everyone froze.

"Who?"

Ethan swallowed.

"Grandfather."

Emma knelt beside him.

"When?"

The boy looked afraid.

"In the basement."

William's expression changed.

"That man wasn't Alexander?"

Ethan shook his head.

"No."

Silence.

"The man who came to see me..."

He looked toward Alexander.

"...was not him."

Alexander frowned.

"What?"

Ethan looked at the photograph.

"The man who came downstairs wore this symbol."

He pointed at the black circle with three lines.

"But he was older."

Emma felt cold.

The person Ethan saw wasn't Alexander.

It was Richard Sterling.

Five days earlier.

Ethan remembered.

He had been in his room after Isabella told him he needed to "rest."

He remembered the argument.

He remembered being taken downstairs.

But later that night...

The hidden door opened.

A man entered.

Older.

Tall.

Walking with a cane.

The man sat beside Ethan.

And said something strange.

"Your father built an empire that was never his."

Ethan had been scared.

But he remembered one thing.

The man's voice.

"Tell Emma Torres that Evelyn kept her promise."

Emma froze.

"Me?"

Ethan nodded.

"He knew your name."

Everyone looked at each other.

Because there was no way Richard should have known Emma.

Unless...

He had been watching her.

For years.

Meanwhile, across the city...

Victoria Sterling stood in an empty office.

Her phone rang.

She answered immediately.

"Yes?"

A deep voice responded.

"You failed."

Victoria closed her eyes.

"William found the archive."

Silence.

"You allowed that?"

"I didn't expect Alexander to return."

The voice became colder.

"You underestimated the housekeeper."

Victoria's expression changed.

"She is more important than we thought."

A pause.

"Bring her to me."

Victoria hesitated.

"She knows too much."

The voice replied:

"That is exactly why she cannot remain free."

Back at Sterling Manor, William made a decision.

A decision that surprised everyone.

"I am going public."

Everyone looked at him.

Isabella frowned.

"What?"

William looked at the documents.

"For twenty-five years, I protected the Sterling name."

His voice became firm.

"I protected the company."

He looked at Emma.

"I protected the wrong people."

A pause.

"Not anymore."

Alexander nodded.

"Then we need to find Richard."

William looked at him.

"And stop him."

Later that night, Emma returned to the guest room at Sterling Manor.

She couldn't sleep.

Too many questions.

Too many secrets.

She looked at the letter from her mother again.

Her biological mother.

The woman she never knew.

Then she noticed something.

A second piece of paper had been hidden inside.

A small note.

Not from Clara.

From Evelyn.

Emma unfolded it.

Only one sentence was written.

"Emma, if you discover who you truly are, remember this: your blood does not define you. Your choices do."

Tears filled her eyes.

Evelyn had known.

She had known Emma would one day discover everything.

A knock came at the door.

Emma quickly hid the papers.

"Come in."

The door opened.

Ethan stood there.

Holding something.

"Miss Emma."

She smiled.

"What happened?"

The boy walked inside.

"I found this in the basement before they closed it."

He handed her a small object.

A USB drive.

Emma frowned.

"What is this?"

Ethan whispered:

"Grandfather told me to give it to you."

Emma froze.

"Richard?"

The boy nodded.

"He said..."

Ethan looked nervous.

"He said only you could open it."

Emma stared at the USB drive.

Why her?

Why did Richard Sterling want her to have it?

She connected it to her laptop.

A single video file appeared.

Recorded twenty-five years ago.

She clicked play.

The screen showed a younger Richard Sterling.

Sitting in an office.

Speaking directly to the camera.

His voice was calm.

Controlled.

And his first words made Emma's blood run cold.

"If you are watching this..."

Richard Sterling looked into the camera.

"...then my son William has finally discovered the truth."

He paused.

Then smiled.

"But there is one thing William does not know."

The screen flickered.

Richard leaned closer.

"Emma Torres..."

Everyone watching froze.

Because he knew her name.

Long before she ever entered Sterling Manor.

His final sentence was a warning.

"You are not the daughter of the woman who raised you."

A pause.

"You are the last surviving heir of Sterling Holdings."

The video stopped.

Emma sat frozen.

Because the mystery had just become even bigger.

She wasn't just connected to the Sterling family.

She was connected to its future.

And somewhere in the city...

Richard Sterling was still alive.

May you like

Watching.

Waiting.
