CHAPTER 2 — THE CHILD NOBODY WAS LOOKING FOR

The staircase seemed endless.
Every step Emma Torres took deeper into the darkness felt heavier than the last.
The elegant Sterling Manor above her represented wealth, power, and perfection.
But this hidden place beneath the house felt like something else entirely.
Forgotten.
Abandoned.
A place where someone had tried to erase the truth.
Emma held her phone tightly, using the weak flashlight to guide her way down.
The air became colder.
The walls became narrower.
And the silence became unbearable.
Except for one thing.
A small sound coming from somewhere ahead.
A child breathing.
Alive.
Emma swallowed hard.
"Ethan?"
This time, her voice was louder.
"Is that you?"
For several seconds, there was no response.
Then—
"Miss Emma..."
The voice was weak.
Barely more than a whisper.
But she knew it.
It was Ethan Sterling.
Emma hurried down the remaining steps.
At the bottom of the staircase was a small underground room.
Not a prison.
Not exactly.
But it was impossible to mistake what it was.
A hidden room.
The walls were covered with old wooden panels.
A small bed sat against one corner.
A blanket lay crumpled on the floor.
There was a table with untouched food.
A glass of water.
A few children's books.
And sitting in the corner, wrapped in a gray blanket, was Ethan.
Emma's heart broke.
The nine-year-old boy looked smaller than she remembered.
His normally neat brown hair was messy.
His face was pale.
His eyes were filled with exhaustion.
But he was alive.
"Oh my God..."
Emma rushed toward him.
"Ethan."
The boy looked up.
For a moment, he didn't move.
Then his eyes filled with tears.
"Miss Emma..."
She knelt beside him.
"It's okay. I'm here."
Ethan grabbed her hand.
His fingers were freezing.
"I knew you would find me."
Those five words nearly destroyed her.
Emma looked around the room.
"Who did this to you?"
Ethan looked away.
The fear returned immediately.
A fear deeper than any child should carry.
"Don't tell them."
Emma frowned.
"Tell who?"
The boy's lips trembled.
"Her."
Emma already knew the answer.
"Isabella?"
Ethan nodded slowly.
Emma felt anger rising inside her.
"What happened, Ethan?"
The boy didn't answer.
Instead, he looked toward the ceiling.
Like he was afraid someone could hear.
"She said Daddy didn't need me anymore."
Emma felt a sharp pain in her chest.
"What?"
Ethan hugged the blanket tighter.
"She said I was making him remember Mom."
A silence filled the room.
Emma closed her eyes.
Evelyn.
Even after death, Isabella was trying to erase every trace of her.
"How long have you been here?"
Ethan looked down.
"I don't know."
"Try to remember."
"Five days."
Emma froze.
Exactly five days.
The same day everyone was told he had gone to Maine.
"Who brought you here?"
The boy hesitated.
Then whispered:
"Mrs. Isabella."
Emma's hands tightened.
"Why?"
Ethan shook his head.
"I don't know."
His voice became smaller.
"But she wasn't alone."
Emma looked at him.
"What do you mean?"
"There was another person."
"Who?"
Ethan stared at the floor.
"I couldn't see his face."
A chill went through Emma.
"What did you hear?"
The boy closed his eyes.
"She said..."
He stopped.
"She said Daddy could never know."
Emma's heart raced.
"Know what?"
Ethan didn't answer.
Instead, he reached under the pillow.
Slowly, he pulled out something hidden.
A small envelope.
Old.
Yellowed.
Emma recognized the handwriting immediately.
She had seen it many times before.
Evelyn Sterling's handwriting.
Her breath caught.
"Where did you get that?"
Ethan looked at the envelope.
"Mom gave it to me before she died."
Emma stared.
"What?"
The boy hugged it.
"She told me if something bad ever happened, I should give it to someone I trusted."
"And you kept it all this time?"
Ethan nodded.
"Because I thought Daddy would protect me."
Emma's eyes softened.
"But he didn't know."
Ethan looked up.
"Because Isabella told him I was away."
The realization hit Emma.
William Sterling wasn't just a careless father.
He had been manipulated.
But why?
What was Isabella hiding?
Emma reached for the envelope.
"Can I see it?"
Ethan hesitated.
Then handed it to her.
The envelope had one sentence written on the front:
"To my son Ethan. Open only when the truth is being buried."
Emma felt a shiver.
Evelyn knew.
Somehow, she knew something would happen.
Her fingers moved toward the seal.
But before she could open it—
A sound came from above.
Footsteps.
Emma and Ethan both froze.
Someone was on the staircase.
Slow.
Controlled.
Coming closer.
Ethan's face turned white.
"She's here."
Emma immediately turned off her phone flashlight.
The basement became completely dark.
The footsteps continued.
One step.
Two steps.
Three.
Emma moved Ethan behind her.
Her heart was pounding.
The person reached the bottom of the stairs.
A shadow appeared.
Then a familiar voice spoke.
"Emma."
Isabella.
The billionaire's wife stood at the entrance.
Still wearing her ivory wedding gown.
Still perfectly composed.
But now there was no fake kindness.
No public smile.
Only anger.
"You disappoint me."
Emma said nothing.
Isabella slowly entered the room.
"I gave you a chance to walk away."
Emma stared at her.
"You locked a child underground."
Isabella looked at Ethan.
Almost annoyed.
"You don't understand what you're seeing."
Ethan moved closer to Emma.
"Stay away from me."
The words were quiet.
But powerful.
Isabella stopped.
For a moment, something strange crossed her face.
Not anger.
Something closer to fear.
Because Ethan wasn't supposed to remember.
He wasn't supposed to speak.
Emma noticed.
"What are you afraid of, Isabella?"
The woman looked at her.
"You think this is about a child?"
She smiled coldly.
"You have no idea what you just uncovered."
Emma stepped forward.
"Then tell me."
Isabella laughed.
"The truth?"
She looked around the hidden room.
"The truth is that William Sterling built an empire on lies."
Emma frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Isabella moved closer.
"Ask yourself something, Emma."
"Why did Evelyn leave this house?"
Emma froze.
Everyone had been told Evelyn died.
But Isabella continued.
"Why did William's perfect first wife hide secrets from her own husband?"
Emma felt the ground shift beneath her.
"You know something about Evelyn's death."
Isabella smiled.
"Everyone thinks I stole William from Evelyn."
She leaned closer.
"But nobody asks the real question."
Her voice dropped.
"Who was Evelyn Sterling really running from?"
Before Emma could respond—
A loud alarm suddenly echoed through the basement.
Red lights flashed.
The hidden room door began closing.
Emma grabbed Ethan.
"What is happening?"
Isabella stepped backward.
Her expression changed.
For the first time...
She looked worried.
Then another voice came through the speakers.
A man's voice.
Calm.
Powerful.
"Isabella."
She froze.
Emma recognized the voice immediately.
William Sterling.
The billionaire himself.
But he wasn't speaking to Isabella like a husband.
He was speaking like someone who had just discovered betrayal.
"Why is my son locked beneath my house?"
The color drained from Isabella's face.
Emma stared at the ceiling.
William knew.
He had found them.
May you like
And somewhere above them...
The billionaire who trusted the wrong woman for five months was finally seeing the truth.
