CHAPTER 18 — THE SECRET RICHARD STERLING FEARED

The countdown continued.

23 HOURS.

14 MINUTES.

08 SECONDS.

The numbers burned across every screen inside Sterling Manor.

A reminder.

A threat.

A final game created by Richard Sterling.

Emma Torres stood in the center of the old garden, staring at the mansion.

The place that had once been her workplace.

The place where she had cleaned floors, carried trays, and walked silently through rooms filled with people who never noticed her.

Now everyone inside that mansion was waiting for her decision.

The future of Sterling Holdings.

The future of the Sterling family.

Her own future.

All depended on her.

But something kept bothering her.

Richard wanted her to choose.

He wanted her to fight.

He wanted her to inherit.

Why?

Why would the man who spent twenty-five years hiding her suddenly reveal everything?

There had to be another reason.

Inside the library, Alexander studied the documents from Clara's chest.

Something wasn't right.

He had spent his life uncovering secrets.

Reading contracts.

Finding hidden meanings.

And now he saw something everyone else missed.

"This isn't about inheritance."

Everyone turned.

William looked up.

"What are you talking about?"

Alexander pointed at the succession agreement.

"Richard wants us to believe the company is the prize."

Emma stepped closer.

"But it's not?"

Alexander shook his head.

"No."

He looked at the document.

"The company is the distraction."

Silence.

"Then what is the real prize?"

Alexander looked toward Emma.

"You."

Emma frowned.

"Me?"

Alexander nodded.

"Richard didn't spend twenty-five years hiding you because he wanted to protect the company."

A pause.

"He hid you because you possess something he doesn't."

William looked confused.

"What?"

Alexander turned the document over.

On the back was a symbol.

Not the Phoenix Circle.

A different one.

A small tree surrounded by three circles.

"I've seen this before."

Jonathan stepped closer.

"Where?"

Alexander answered:

"In Clara Torres' files."

Emma's heart stopped.

"My mother?"

Alexander nodded.

"Your mother wasn't just investigating Sterling Holdings."

"She was searching for something older."

Twenty-five years earlier...

Before the Phoenix Circle.

Before Sterling Holdings became a global empire.

There was another organization.

A group of investors and founders who created the original foundation of the company.

They called themselves:

The Legacy Council.

Unlike Richard's Phoenix Circle, they didn't believe in control.

They believed in responsibility.

The company was not created to make one family powerful.

It was created to build something that could help thousands of people.

But Richard changed everything.

He removed the original founders.

He rewrote history.

And he buried the truth.

Until Clara discovered it.

Emma looked at Jonathan.

"You knew about this."

Jonathan was silent.

That was enough.

William's expression hardened.

"Jonathan."

The attorney sighed.

"I knew pieces."

"Pieces?"

"I knew Richard was hiding something."

A pause.

"But I didn't know the entire truth."

Emma looked at him.

"Why help him?"

Jonathan looked down.

"Because I believed Richard was protecting the company."

Alexander shook his head.

"You were protecting a lie."

Jonathan accepted the accusation.

"Yes."

Suddenly, Ethan entered the room.

Everyone turned.

The boy looked different.

Stronger.

More confident.

"Miss Emma."

She smiled.

"What's wrong?"

Ethan held a small notebook.

"I found this."

William immediately stood.

"Where?"

"In Mom's old room."

Everyone froze.

Evelyn's room had been searched many times.

Nothing was supposed to remain.

Emma took the notebook.

The cover was old.

Inside were drawings.

Notes.

Numbers.

And one sentence repeated over and over:

"The truth is hidden where the first promise was made."

Emma looked confused.

"The first promise?"

Alexander's eyes widened.

"The garden."

William looked at him.

"What?"

Alexander pointed outside.

"Your parents built the original garden before Sterling Manor existed."

Emma looked toward the window.

"Evelyn loved that place."

William nodded slowly.

"She said it was the only honest place in this house."

They rushed to the garden.

At first, nothing seemed unusual.

Flowers.

Trees.

Stone paths.

Then Ethan stopped.

"Here."

Everyone looked at him.

He pointed toward an old tree.

"The man who took me downstairs..."

"He talked about this tree."

William approached.

"What did he say?"

Ethan whispered:

"He said..."

"Everything begins where the first promise was broken."

Emma touched the tree.

And felt something.

A small metal edge beneath the roots.

They cleared the soil carefully.

Underneath was a hidden metal box.

Not old.

Not damaged.

Protected.

Emma opened it.

Inside was a single object.

A small recording device.

And a letter.

The name on it made everyone freeze.

RICHARD STERLING.

William stared.

"My father left this?"

Alexander nodded.

"Apparently."

Emma pressed play.

Static.

Then Richard's voice.

But this recording was different.

Not arrogant.

Not cold.

He sounded tired.

Almost afraid.

"If you are hearing this, then I failed."

Everyone became silent.

"I spent my life building an empire because I was afraid."

Emma looked surprised.

"Afraid of losing control."

"Afraid of becoming like my father."

William's expression changed.

Because nobody had ever heard Richard speak like this.

The recording continued.

"The Phoenix Circle was my greatest mistake."

A pause.

"But the greatest mistake was believing power could replace family."

Emma listened carefully.

"Clara discovered the truth before anyone else."

"She discovered that Sterling Holdings was never the most valuable thing."

The recording paused.

Then Richard whispered:

"The real inheritance is not money."

A click.

A hidden file appeared.

Everyone looked at the device.

A second recording.

Richard continued:

"Emma..."

She froze.

"If you are listening, then you are old enough to know what I could never admit."

A long silence.

"You are not just William's daughter."

Everyone looked at William.

"You are not just Clara's child."

Richard's voice became emotional.

"You are the last person who can stop what I created."

The screen displayed a file name.

PHOENIX FINAL PROTOCOL

Emma opened it.

Inside was a list.

Names.

Companies.

Government officials.

Judges.

Powerful people across the world.

Alexander's face changed.

"This..."

William looked at him.

"What?"

Alexander whispered:

"Richard didn't create the Phoenix Circle alone."

A pause.

"He was working for someone."

Emma scrolled further.

At the bottom of the list was one final name.

The person who controlled everything.

The person even Richard feared.

The name appeared.

Everyone froze.

Because it was impossible.

The person responsible for decades of manipulation...

Was someone they knew.

Someone they trusted.

Someone who had been helping them uncover the truth.

ALEXANDER VALE.

The room went silent.

Emma slowly looked at Alexander.

"No."

Alexander didn't move.

William stepped between them.

"Explain."

Alexander stared at the screen.

His face had lost all emotion.

Because he knew what this meant.

Someone had planned this.

Someone had forged the evidence.

Someone wanted them to believe Alexander was the enemy.

But before he could speak...

Every phone inside Sterling Manor received the same message.

One sentence.

From an unknown number.

"Congratulations. You finally found the traitor."

Emma looked at Alexander.

And for the first time...

May you like

She wondered if the man who helped uncover the truth...

Was actually the person who buried it.
