CHAPTER 17 — THE LAST WILL OF CLARA TORRES

Darkness covered Sterling Manor.
Not the peaceful darkness of night.
The kind of darkness that came before a storm.
The mansion that once represented wealth and power had become a prison of secrets.
Everyone stood frozen.
Waiting.
Listening.
Because Richard Sterling had finally spoken.
After twenty-five years of hiding...
The founder of the empire had returned.
And he wanted something.
Emma Torres stood in the center of the basement.
Surrounded by the people who had shaped her entire life.
William.
Alexander.
Isabella.
Victoria.
Jonathan.
All of them connected by the same history.
All of them damaged by the same man.
Richard Sterling.
The emergency lights finally turned on.
William immediately looked toward the speakers.
"Richard!"
No answer.
Only silence.
Alexander checked his phone.
"No signal."
Jonathan looked toward the entrance.
"The security system has been compromised."
William turned sharply.
"You knew this would happen."
Jonathan looked at him.
"I suspected."
"Suspected?"
William's anger exploded.
"You knew my father was alive."
Jonathan didn't deny it.
"Yes."
The room became tense.
Emma looked at him.
"You knew everything."
Jonathan nodded.
"Not everything."
A pause.
"But enough."
William stepped closer.
"Then explain."
Jonathan looked exhausted.
"Because every person who knew the truth ended up hurt."
He looked at Emma.
"Your mother."
"Evelyn."
"Alexander."
"And now you."
Suddenly, a sound came from the old archive room.
A hidden door opening.
Everyone turned.
Victoria's face changed.
"No."
William looked at her.
"What?"
She whispered:
"He found it."
"What?"
Victoria walked toward the door.
"The real archive."
Emma followed.
"What do you mean?"
Victoria looked at her.
"The room Richard never wanted anyone to find."
Behind the hidden door was another passage.
Older.
Narrower.
Built before Sterling Manor became a symbol of wealth.
The walls were covered with handwritten notes.
Not business records.
Personal messages.
Letters.
Memories.
At the end of the passage was a small room.
Inside:
A desk.
A chair.
A locked wooden chest.
And on the wall...
A photograph.
Clara Torres.
Holding baby Emma.
Beside her stood Evelyn.
And William.
A family that never got the chance to exist.
Emma touched the photograph.
Tears filled her eyes.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?"
William stood behind her.
"Because we were afraid."
She turned.
"Afraid of what?"
William looked at the picture.
"That knowing the truth would put a target on your back."
Emma's voice became emotional.
"But not knowing meant I lived a lie."
William had no answer.
Because she was right.
Jonathan opened the wooden chest.
Inside was a single envelope.
Old.
Sealed.
The name written on it made everyone stop.
EMMA TORRES.
Emma stared.
"My mother?"
Jonathan nodded.
"Clara left it for you."
Her hands shook as she opened it.
Inside was a letter.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
But the love behind it was obvious.
She began reading.
"My beautiful daughter Emma,"
"If you are reading this, then I am no longer there to protect you."
Emma's eyes filled.
"I know you will have questions."
"Why did I leave?"
"Why did I hide you?"
"Why did I allow you to grow up without knowing your true family?"
A tear fell onto the paper.
"Because your life mattered more than my own."
Emma covered her mouth.
The letter continued.
"Your father loves you."
She looked up at William.
He froze.
"But he was trapped by the same people who trapped me."
"Richard Sterling believed power was everything."
"He believed family existed only to serve the empire."
"But I discovered the truth."
A pause.
"Sterling Holdings was never built by Richard alone."
Emma read the next sentence slowly.
"The original company belonged to my family."
Everyone froze.
"What?"
Alexander stepped closer.
Emma continued.
"My grandfather created the first foundation of Sterling Holdings before Richard took control."
Jonathan looked shocked.
Victoria whispered:
"Impossible."
The letter continued.
"Richard stole the company through legal manipulation."
"But I kept proof."
Emma looked at the chest.
Inside was another document.
"The rightful owner of Sterling Holdings is the person carrying the Torres bloodline."
Emma's hands trembled.
"Me."
Suddenly, the mansion speakers turned on again.
Richard's voice filled the room.
"Beautiful."
Everyone froze.
"You finally found your mother's gift."
Emma looked around.
"Where are you?"
Richard laughed softly.
"Still asking the wrong question."
"What question should I ask?"
His voice became colder.
"Not where I am."
A pause.
"Why I did it."
The screens around the room activated.
Richard appeared.
Older.
Tired.
But still powerful.
He looked directly at Emma.
"I watched you grow."
William stepped forward.
"You stayed away from your own granddaughter?"
Richard ignored him.
"Do you know why I never destroyed you?"
Emma stared.
"Why?"
"Because I knew you would become stronger."
A pause.
"People like William need power."
"People like Victoria need control."
"But people like you..."
He smiled.
"People like you survive."
Emma felt disgust.
"You ruined my mother's life."
Richard's expression didn't change.
"Your mother was weak."
William's anger exploded.
"Don't talk about her."
Richard smiled.
"Still protecting the dead."
He looked at Emma.
"That is your problem."
"You inherited their emotions."
Then Richard revealed something unexpected.
"I didn't create the Phoenix Circle to destroy the Sterling family."
Everyone listened.
"I created it because I knew one day someone would try to take everything from us."
Emma frowned.
"You stole a company and called it protection?"
Richard smiled.
"History is written by winners."
Alexander stepped forward.
"You murdered people."
Richard looked at him.
"And you survived."
A pause.
"That makes you part of my story too."
Then Richard showed a document.
A legal contract.
Everyone recognized it.
William's face changed.
"No..."
Richard smiled.
"The original succession agreement."
Emma looked confused.
"What is it?"
Richard answered:
"The document that decides who controls Sterling Holdings."
He lifted it.
"And according to this..."
A pause.
"Emma cannot inherit anything."
Everyone froze.
William stepped forward.
"Why?"
Richard smiled.
"Because the heir must choose."
"Choose what?"
Richard looked directly at Emma.
"Family."
A pause.
"Or power."
The screen changed.
A countdown appeared.
24 HOURS REMAINING
Richard continued:
"Tomorrow, the board will vote."
"If Emma chooses the company, William loses everything."
"If Emma chooses her family..."
He smiled.
"The Sterling empire disappears."
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
Because Richard had created the ultimate trap.
No matter what Emma chose...
Someone would lose.
Later that night, Emma stood alone in Evelyn's old garden.
The same garden where everything started.
William approached quietly.
"You don't have to carry this."
Emma looked at him.
"I spent my whole life believing I had nothing."
A pause.
"Now I have everything."
She looked at the mansion.
"And somehow it feels heavier."
William stood beside her.
"I should have protected you."
Emma looked at him.
"You didn't know."
"But I should have."
Silence.
Then William said something she never expected.
"I don't care about Sterling Holdings."
Emma looked at him.
"I care about you."
The words were simple.
But they changed everything.
Because for the first time...
Emma wasn't fighting for an empire.
She was fighting for a family.
But somewhere hidden beneath New York...
Richard Sterling watched the security footage.
He smiled.
"Good."
His assistant looked confused.
"Good?"
Richard nodded.
"She finally understands."
"What?"
Richard looked at Emma's image.
"The girl who wanted nothing..."
"Is now willing to fight for everything."
A pause.
"Exactly as I planned."
The assistant hesitated.
"Then you wanted her to find the truth?"
Richard smiled.
"Of course."
"Why?"
Richard looked at an old photograph of Clara.
"Because only my granddaughter can unlock the final secret."
The assistant frowned.
"What secret?"
May you like
Richard whispered:
"The one even I was afraid to discover."
