CHAPTER 8 — THE SECRET THOMAS BURIED

The photograph slipped from my trembling fingers.

It landed face-up on the marble floor.

Three young men.

Three broad smiles.

Three futures they could never have imagined.

My father.

Victor Hale.

Thomas Reynolds.

Standing shoulder to shoulder in military academy uniforms.

Not business partners.

Not strangers.

Brothers.

For a long moment...

No one spoke.

Even the gunfire outside seemed impossibly distant.

Thomas stared at the photograph as though it had crawled out of his worst nightmare.

Victor smiled.

"I wondered how long you'd keep pretending."

Thomas's voice was barely audible.

"I buried that life."

Victor took another slow step forward despite the blood soaking through his shoulder.

"No."

"You buried the truth."

I looked at Thomas.

"You knew him."

He didn't answer.

"You knew my father."

Silence.

"You knew Blackstone."

His eyes remained fixed on the photograph.

Finally...

He whispered,

"I helped build it."

The words hit harder than any bullet.

Grace gasped.

Noah looked back and forth between us, confused.

"You... what?"

Thomas slowly removed his security badge.

"I was one of the original founders."

The room fell silent.

Even Victor stopped smiling.

Thomas looked twenty years older than he had only minutes before.

"I left."

His voice cracked.

"Twenty-three years ago."

"Why?"

He closed his eyes.

"Because I finally understood what Blackstone had become."

My father folded his hands behind his back.

"Thomas always was weak."

Thomas looked directly at him.

"No."

"I was the only one who still had a conscience."

Victor laughed.

"You tell yourself that every night."

"I have to."

"Because otherwise..."

Victor spread his arms.

"...you'd have to admit Emily died because of you."

The words echoed through the mansion.

My blood turned cold.

"What did you say?"

Thomas's breathing stopped.

Victor nodded toward him.

"Go ahead."

"Tell Daniel."

"You owe him that much."

Thomas couldn't meet my eyes.

My stomach twisted.

"What happened?"

He remained silent.

I stepped closer.

"What happened?"

Finally...

He looked at me.

"Emily came to me."

"When?"

"Three days before she died."

The room vanished around me.

"She knew Blackstone existed."

My heartbeat thundered.

"She had found documents."

"What documents?"

"The original partnership agreement."

Between...

My father.

Victor.

And Thomas.

Thomas reached into his jacket.

From a hidden pocket...

He removed an old envelope sealed with faded wax.

"I've carried this every day for twenty-three years."

He handed it to me.

"I prayed I'd never have to open it."

Inside was a single handwritten letter.

The paper had yellowed with age.

The signature at the bottom made my hands tremble.

William Carter.

The missing businessman.

The man whose disappearance had built the Ashford fortune.

I began reading.

"If anyone finds this letter..."

"It means they finally came for me."

"Richard Ashford has agreed to sell more than my company."

"He has agreed to sell every family that trusts him."

"Blackstone was never created for security."

"It was created to identify wealthy families with vulnerable heirs."

"Once inside..."

"They remove the parents."

"Control the children."

"Control the inheritance."

"Then repeat."

Grace covered her mouth.

Victoria began crying again.

My entire body shook.

"This..."

I whispered.

"This isn't about us."

Thomas nodded.

"No."

"It never was."

William Carter's letter continued.

"If Richard succeeds..."

"Thousands of fortunes will belong to Blackstone within one generation."

I looked at my father.

"You've been stealing children."

He answered without emotion.

"I've been protecting legacies."

"You murdered families."

"I preserved wealth."

Noah suddenly stepped away from Grace.

His tiny face filled with confusion.

He looked at his grandfather.

"You hurt my mommy?"

The room froze.

For the first time...

My father's expression changed.

Real pain crossed his face.

"I never wanted Emily to die."

Noah's little voice trembled.

"Then why didn't you save her?"

No answer came.

Victor finally broke the silence.

"Because she refused to sign."

My father closed his eyes.

"Enough."

Victor ignored him.

"Emily discovered the Guardianship Program."

Grace frowned.

"What program?"

Thomas answered quietly.

"Project Guardian."

Victor nodded.

"We targeted wealthy widowers."

My stomach twisted.

"They're lonely."

"They're vulnerable."

"They're raising children."

"So..."

He smiled.

"...we provide them with the perfect partner."

I slowly turned toward Victoria.

She lowered her head.

"I was recruited at twenty-two."

She whispered.

"They changed my name."

"They changed my past."

"They taught me everything Daniel loved."

Her tears fell silently.

"I wasn't supposed to fall in love with Noah."

Grace looked stunned.

"You loved him?"

Victoria nodded.

"He reminded me..."

"...of my little brother."

Victor laughed.

"Your brother died years ago."

Victoria looked directly at him.

"No."

"You killed him."

Victor's smile disappeared.

For the first time...

He looked genuinely angry.

Before anyone could speak—

The emergency radio crackled.

One of the outside guards screamed.

"They've got helicopters!"

Thomas rushed toward the remaining monitor.

Three black helicopters appeared above the estate.

Fast.

Low.

Military-grade.

Each carrying the Blackstone insignia.

Thomas whispered,

"This isn't a retrieval team."

"What is it?"

He stared at the screen.

"They're eliminating everyone."

My father suddenly stepped forward.

"No."

Victor looked surprised.

"They've gone too far."

Victor laughed.

"You taught us never to leave witnesses."

"I changed my mind."

"No."

Victor shook his head.

"You became sentimental."

A Blackstone operative handed Victor a secure satellite phone.

Victor answered.

Listened.

Then smiled.

"Understood."

He disconnected the call.

My father frowned.

"Who was that?"

Victor looked directly at him.

"The Board."

Silence.

"What board?"

Victor's smile returned.

"The people who replaced you."

For the first time in my life...

I watched my father lose control.

His face turned pale.

"They..."

Victor nodded.

"They retired you years ago."

"You've just been too arrogant to notice."

My father slowly stepped backward.

"You work for me."

Victor laughed.

"I used to."

He raised his pistol.

Pointing it directly...

At my father.

"You served your purpose."

The room froze.

Victor's finger tightened on the trigger.

May you like

Then he whispered,

"Goodbye, Richard."
