CHAPTER 1 — THE BROTHER'S CALL

The phone was still warm in my hand.
Marcus had never sounded nervous before.
Not once.
As children, he'd been the brother who climbed onto frozen lakes without checking the ice.
The teenager who laughed after totaling Dad's Porsche.
The man who somehow convinced investors to hand him millions while smiling like the world belonged to him.
Fear wasn't part of Marcus.
Yet now...
His breathing was uneven.
"Daniel," he said quietly. "Whatever Grace showed you... it isn't what it looks like."
I looked across my late wife's bedroom.
Victoria stood between two security guards, mascara streaking down her cheeks. For the first time since I'd met her, she looked less like the sophisticated woman I'd planned to marry and more like someone desperately calculating the fastest escape.
Grace remained beside Noah, one protective hand resting gently on his shoulder.
The laptop continued playing.
Emily's face—my wife—was frozen on the screen after the recording ended.
She looked alive.
Painfully alive.
Three years vanished in an instant.
Three years of believing I had failed to protect her.
Three years of believing her death had been nothing more than a cruel accident.
Now...
Nothing felt real anymore.
Marcus spoke again.
"Daniel?"
"I've got one question."
Silence.
"Did you know Emily recorded that video?"
Another pause.
Too long.
When Marcus finally answered, his voice had lost its confidence.
"...No."
He lied.
I had known Marcus my entire life.
I could hear his lies before he even finished speaking.
"You should stop listening to Grace."
My jaw tightened.
"You forged my signature."
"It wasn't—"
"You stole my medical records."
"Daniel, calm down."
The words ignited something inside me.
Calm down.
The same phrase everyone had repeated after Emily died.
When I couldn't sleep.
When I stopped eating.
When Noah cried himself to sleep asking where Mommy had gone.
When I sat alone in therapy trying to convince myself life still had meaning.
Calm down.
My brother had used my grief as a weapon.
"You have exactly one opportunity," I said quietly.
"Tell me the truth."
Marcus exhaled.
"You don't understand the entire picture."
"I understand enough."
"No..."
His voice became harder.
"You understand what someone wanted you to see."
Before I could answer, another voice entered the call.
Male.
Older.
"Hang up."
I froze.
Marcus wasn't alone.
"Who's with you?"
The line went silent.
Then...
Click.
The call ended.
The room became unbearably quiet.
Even Victoria had stopped crying.
I slowly lowered the phone.
Grace looked toward me.
"Someone was with him."
"I heard."
"It wasn't on speaker."
"No."
"Which means..."
"He wanted me to hear that voice."
Grace frowned.
"Why?"
I looked back at Emily's laptop.
"Because someone else is involved."
The estate security chief arrived moments later.
Thomas Reynolds had worked for my family for twenty-seven years.
Former Secret Service.
Gray hair.
Military posture.
The kind of man who noticed everything.
He stepped into the bedroom, immediately taking in the guards, Victoria, the open drawer, and the frightened child standing beside Grace.
"Mr. Ashford."
His voice remained steady.
"You requested every security recording."
"I want everything."
"Already being copied."
"No one leaves this property."
Thomas nodded.
"I've also disabled every gate."
Victoria suddenly laughed.
It wasn't happiness.
It was desperation.
"You think cameras will save you?"
Thomas looked at her.
"They usually do."
She shook her head.
"They only recorded today."
My eyes narrowed.
"What do you mean?"
Victoria smiled.
For the first time since I'd exposed her, confidence returned to her face.
"You'll see."
Thirty minutes later...
We gathered inside the estate's security office.
Six monitors covered the wall.
Thomas inserted the storage drive.
The footage from today appeared immediately.
I watched myself walking through the side entrance.
Hidden.
Silent.
Exactly as I'd remembered.
Then...
The system skipped.
Three minutes vanished.
Thomas frowned.
"That's impossible."
He rewound.
The same thing happened.
A gap.
Exactly three minutes.
The three minutes before I entered the hallway.
The three minutes when Victoria had grabbed Noah.
The three minutes that proved everything.
Gone.
Thomas checked another camera.
Same gap.
Another angle.
Missing.
Every hallway camera had lost exactly three minutes.
His face darkened.
"This wasn't an accident."
My stomach tightened.
"Can someone erase footage remotely?"
Thomas nodded slowly.
"If they have administrator access."
I stared at him.
"Who has administrator access?"
He hesitated.
Then answered.
"You."
"I never use it."
"I know."
"Who else?"
He swallowed.
"...Marcus."
The room fell silent.
Thomas looked genuinely ashamed.
"He asked for emergency credentials six months ago."
"For what reason?"
"He said you approved it."
"I never did."
"I know that now."
Noah squeezed Grace's hand tighter.
Victoria looked toward the floor.
She hadn't expected this.
Neither had I.
Marcus hadn't simply planned the wedding.
He had been preparing the estate itself.
"Sir..."
Thomas opened another file.
"This may interest you."
He enlarged the access log.
Dozens of entries appeared.
Late-night logins.
Camera maintenance.
Door access changes.
Alarm overrides.
Every single one authorized...
By Marcus.
Some occurred while I was traveling.
Others while I slept upstairs.
One login...
Occurred yesterday.
At 2:13 a.m.
"What happened yesterday?"
Thomas clicked.
A digital blueprint of the estate appeared.
Highlighted in red...
Emily's bedroom.
Someone had unlocked the electronic alarm protecting that room.
Grace stared at the screen.
"I never touched the alarm."
Thomas nodded.
"You couldn't."
"Only administrators can."
I slowly turned toward Victoria.
She refused to meet my eyes.
"You already knew the drawer had been opened."
She remained silent.
"You were looking for the key."
Still nothing.
"The baby blanket."
Her breathing quickened.
"You searched Noah's room."
Silence.
"You searched Emily's room."
Silence.
"You couldn't find the key."
Finally...
Victoria whispered,
"It wasn't supposed to happen like this."
Noah suddenly tugged my sleeve.
"Dad..."
I knelt beside him.
"What is it?"
He looked around the room before whispering.
"I know the man on Uncle Marcus's phone."
Every adult froze.
I gently held his shoulders.
"You've seen him before?"
Noah nodded.
"He came here."
"When?"
"The night before Miss Victoria moved into the guest house."
My pulse quickened.
"What did he look like?"
The little boy frowned as he tried to remember.
"He had..."
Noah slowly raised one hand.
"...a snake."
Grace blinked.
"A tattoo?"
Noah nodded.
"On his neck."
Thomas immediately turned toward his computer.
"I know exactly who that is."
I looked at him.
His expression had completely changed.
"It can't be."
"What?"
Thomas swallowed hard.
"If Noah is right..."
He looked directly at me.
"...your brother isn't working alone."
The room became deathly still.
May you like
Then Thomas whispered four words that made everyone's blood run cold.
"He's working with Blackstone."
