CHAPTER 12 — WHERE EMILY DIED

The note trembled in my hand.

"Meet me where Emily died. Come alone if you want the truth."

Below the message, the familiar Blackstone symbol seemed almost alive beneath the emergency lights.

Thomas immediately reached for it.

"It's a trap."

"I know."

"Then don't go."

I looked toward Noah.

He was asleep against Grace's shoulder, exhausted after the longest night of his young life.

"I've spent three years wondering how Emily died."

I folded the note carefully.

"If there's even a chance of learning the truth..."

"I have to go."

Colonel James Sullivan removed his earpiece.

"My team can surround the location."

I shook my head.

"If they see your men..."

"...they'll disappear."

Thomas agreed.

"They've survived for decades by detecting surveillance."

The Colonel sighed.

"So what do you suggest?"

"I go alone."

"No."

Three voices answered at once.

Grace.

Thomas.

The Colonel.

Before anyone could argue further—

Victoria spoke quietly from the ambulance parked outside the mansion.

"I know where."

Everyone turned.

Her wounded shoulder had been bandaged, but her face remained pale.

"The place Emily died."

"You know it?"

She nodded.

"It wasn't the hospital."

Silence.

"What?"

Victoria looked directly at me.

"Emily never died in the emergency room."

My heartbeat stopped.

"Explain."

Victoria swallowed.

"Your father moved her."

Thomas frowned.

"Moved her where?"

Victoria closed her eyes.

"Blackstone's medical facility."

Colonel Sullivan's expression changed instantly.

"Which one?"

She looked surprised.

"You know about them?"

He answered softly.

"We've been trying to find one for twelve years."

Victoria nodded toward the west.

"Thirty miles outside the city."

"An abandoned naval rehabilitation hospital."

Thomas immediately recognized it.

"Fort Sterling."

Victoria nodded.

"It closed twenty years ago."

Grace whispered,

"I thought it was abandoned."

"It is."

Victoria looked toward the dark horizon.

"Above ground."

Silence settled over the group.

The Colonel unfolded a satellite map.

His face tightened.

"No underground structures appear here."

Victoria gave a sad smile.

"They won't."

"Why?"

"Because they're beneath the original Cold War bunker."

Thomas looked at me.

"Emily was taken underground."

Victoria nodded.

"She was still alive."

Every muscle in my body locked.

"What?"

Victoria's voice shook.

"I heard the doctors arguing."

"They said she could survive."

I could barely breathe.

"Then why..."

Victoria couldn't finish.

Instead...

She started crying.

Richard Ashford's words echoed inside my head.

"Emily wasn't supposed to die."

For the first time...

I wondered if that had been true.

The Colonel pointed at the map.

"If Blackstone operated beneath Fort Sterling..."

"...there should still be emergency tunnels."

Thomas immediately traced one with his finger.

"Here."

"This tunnel connects to the old harbor."

"Perfect escape route."

Victoria slowly reached into her purse.

"I took this."

She handed me a small magnetic access card.

The faded words read:

LEVEL B4

Grace frowned.

"What is B4?"

Victoria whispered,

"The Archive."

Thomas looked at her sharply.

"What archive?"

"The room where Blackstone keeps everything."

"Financial records?"

She shook her head.

"People."

Silence.

"What do you mean?"

Victoria's voice almost disappeared.

"Children."

Grace covered her mouth.

"No..."

Victoria nodded.

"Every child targeted by Project Guardian."

"Their photographs."

"Their medical files."

"Their psychological profiles."

"Everything."

The Colonel slowly lowered the map.

"My God..."

Victoria looked directly at him.

"It isn't hundreds."

She paused.

"It's thousands."

Noah stirred in his sleep.

He murmured softly,

"Mom..."

Grace gently kissed his forehead.

"We'll bring her justice."

I looked toward the rising sun outside the shattered mansion.

Emily had spent years fighting alone.

She had hidden evidence.

Recorded videos.

Left clues inside baby blankets, teddy bears, and locked drawers.

She hadn't been preparing for revenge.

She had been preparing for survival.

Thomas suddenly remembered something.

"The microSD card."

"What about it?"

"There was another folder."

Everyone turned.

He inserted the card back into the encrypted reader.

Hidden beneath FOR NOAH...

A second encrypted folder appeared.

Its title contained only one word.

DANIEL

The password prompt appeared.

None of us knew it.

Grace quietly smiled.

"Try Noah's birthday."

I entered it.

Access denied.

Thomas tried Emily's birthday.

Denied.

Then Noah, half asleep in Grace's arms, whispered without opening his eyes,

"Butterflies..."

We all looked at him.

"What?"

He smiled faintly.

"Mommy always said..."

"...butterflies always find their way home."

I typed:

Butterflies

The folder opened.

Inside was a single document.

Not a video.

A scanned architectural blueprint.

Across the top...

FORT STERLING — SUBLEVEL B4

The blueprint showed dozens of underground corridors.

Laboratories.

Holding rooms.

Operating theaters.

Data vaults.

At the very center...

One room outlined in red.

PROJECT GUARDIAN ARCHIVE

Thomas slowly exhaled.

"This is enough to bring them down."

The Colonel shook his head.

"No."

He pointed to another room.

Buried beneath the archive.

Far below every other level.

One final chamber.

Its label made everyone in the room fall silent.

SUBLEVEL OMEGA

Grace frowned.

"What does Omega mean?"

Victoria's face turned completely white.

"No one was allowed there."

"Who went inside?"

She whispered,

"Only Eleanor Whitmore."

A sudden vibration interrupted the silence.

The encrypted laptop turned on by itself.

No one touched it.

The screen flashed black.

Then a single live video feed appeared.

Not a recording.

A live camera.

Richard Ashford stood inside a dimly lit underground corridor.

Bruised.

His hands bound behind his back.

Someone stepped into frame behind him.

Elegant.

Silver-haired.

Calm.

The woman from Emily's photograph.

She smiled directly into the camera.

Then spoke with chilling composure.

"Daniel..."

"I've been waiting for you."

The screen went black.

One sentence appeared.
