CHAPTER 16 — THE SECOND MIRROR

The woman smiled.

Perfectly.

Painfully.

She wore Emily's face.

Emily's dark hair rested gently over her shoulders.

The butterfly necklace shimmered beneath the operating room lights.

Even the tiny scar near her left eyebrow was exactly where it should have been.

To anyone else...

She was Emily.

But not to me.

She had called me Daniel.

Emily never did.

Not once in twelve years.

When we argued...

I was Danny.

When we laughed...

I was Danny.

When Noah was born...

She whispered,

"You did it, Danny."

Only strangers called me Daniel.

Only people who had learned my life from documents.

Not from love.

The woman noticed the change in my expression.

Her smile faded slightly.

"You know."

I nodded.

"You're not her."

Silence.

She slowly stood from the chair.

"I almost convinced you."

"No."

"You hesitated."

"I remembered something Emily left for me."

The woman's shoulders relaxed.

Almost with relief.

"Good."

Everyone stared at her.

"What?"

She quietly smiled.

"Then Emily was smarter than all of us."

Thomas wasn't there.

The realization struck me again like a knife.

He had stayed behind.

Holding the lighthouse.

Buying us time.

I forced myself to focus.

"We're wasting time."

"Where is Emily?"

The woman looked toward the floor.

"I've never met her."

My heart sank.

"But..."

She continued,

"I know where they took her."

Colonel Sullivan stepped forward.

"Talk."

The woman looked at each of us.

"My designation is Mirror Two."

"My real name..."

She hesitated.

"I think it was Hannah."

"I don't remember my last name."

Victoria quietly reached for her hand.

"You don't have to remember today."

Hannah smiled sadly.

"Thank you."

Grace studied her carefully.

"You don't act like the others."

Hannah shook her head.

"I failed."

"Failed?"

"They trained me for six years."

"To replace Emily."

"They said I lacked emotional discipline."

Victoria whispered,

"You cared too much."

Hannah nodded.

"I couldn't stop asking about Noah."

Silence settled over the underground laboratory.

Colonel Sullivan slowly searched the operating room.

Medical files.

DNA reports.

Voice analysis.

Behavioral studies.

Entire walls covered with photographs of Emily.

Every birthday.

Every family vacation.

Every anniversary.

Even private moments inside our own home.

Someone had watched us for years.

Grace covered her mouth.

"They recorded everything."

One file remained open on the operating table.

Across the top:

SUBJECT: EMILY ASHFORD

Status:

UNSUITABLE FOR REPLACEMENT

Reason:

ORIGINAL REMAINS ALIVE

No one spoke.

I read the sentence again.

And again.

Unable to believe it.

Original remains alive.

Emily...

Was officially listed as alive.

The Colonel immediately photographed the document.

"This is enough for a federal warrant."

Hannah quietly interrupted.

"It won't matter."

"Why?"

"Omega is already evacuating."

As if answering her—

A mechanical alarm echoed through the underground complex.

A calm computerized voice repeated:

Phoenix Protocol activated.

Facility destruction in twenty-five minutes.

All personnel evacuate immediately.

Red emergency lights flooded every corridor.

Victoria looked terrified.

"It's beginning."

Hannah rushed toward a wall-mounted terminal.

"They've started flooding the lower levels."

She rapidly typed several commands.

Nothing happened.

"Locked."

Colonel Sullivan inserted an encrypted military access device.

The terminal unlocked.

A facility map appeared.

Most of Omega flashed red.

Only one section remained green.

LEVEL O

Grace frowned.

"I thought Omega was the lowest level."

Hannah slowly shook her head.

"No."

"There's one more."

The screen zoomed deeper beneath the bunker.

A hidden structure appeared.

No blueprints.

No descriptions.

Only one label.

OBSIDIAN.

Victoria's face drained of color.

"I've heard that name."

"Where?"

"My brother..."

She struggled to breathe.

"He was afraid of it."

The Colonel frowned.

"What is Obsidian?"

Hannah whispered,

"No Mirrors were allowed there."

"No Guardians."

"No doctors."

"Only Eleanor."

Suddenly...

The operating room monitor turned on by itself.

Static flickered across the screen.

Then Eleanor Whitmore appeared.

Not live.

Pre-recorded.

She smiled warmly.

Almost kindly.

"If you're watching this..."

"...then you've reached Omega."

She folded her hands calmly.

"I expected Daniel."

"I did not expect Hannah."

Hannah froze.

Eleanor looked directly into the camera.

"Hannah."

"You always disappointed me."

"I gave you Emily's face."

"I gave you Emily's memories."

"I even gave you her handwriting."

"And still..."

"...you chose compassion."

Grace whispered,

"She brainwashed them."

Eleanor continued.

"Daniel."

"You've been asking where Emily is."

She smiled.

"The answer is simple."

"I kept my promise."

"I never killed her."

Hope surged through my chest.

Then Eleanor added:

"I simply buried her where no one would ever look."

The screen changed.

An underground chamber appeared.

Dark.

Circular.

Steel walls.

At its center...

A transparent medical capsule.

Inside...

A woman floated peacefully in clear preservation fluid.

Long dark hair drifted around her face.

Butterfly necklace resting against her collarbone.

This time...

There was no mistake.

It was Emily.

Older by three years.

Paler.

But unmistakably Emily.

Alive.

Motionless.

Connected to dozens of life-support tubes.

Grace burst into tears.

Victoria covered her mouth.

Even Colonel Sullivan stood frozen.

I stepped toward the screen.

"Emily..."

Eleanor's voice returned.

"Welcome to Obsidian."

She smiled one final time.

"If you want your wife back..."

"...you have exactly twenty-three minutes."

The screen went black.

At that exact moment...

The floor beneath them trembled violently.

Somewhere below Omega...

Massive steel doors began opening.

A deep mechanical voice echoed through the bunker.

OBSIDIAN ACCESS GRANTED.

Then another voice followed.

One I hadn't heard in years.

Weak.

Faint.

But unmistakable.

"Danny..."

It was Emily.

May you like

She was alive.

And she had just called my name.
