CHAPTER 18 — A FATHER ALWAYS KNOWS

The countdown echoed through Obsidian.

04:58

04:57

Every second struck like a hammer against my chest.

Emily floated inside the medical capsule.

Her heartbeat remained steady.

But the oxygen monitor was dropping.

Slowly.

Relentlessly.

Across the chamber...

Another glass pod slowly rotated toward us.

Inside stood a little boy.

Five years old.

Dark brown hair.

Hazel eyes.

The same blue sweater Noah wore.

Even the tiny scar on his left knee matched perfectly.

He looked exactly like my son.

Grace whispered,

"No..."

Victoria covered her mouth.

"They cloned him..."

Hannah shook her head.

"Not cloned."

"Conditioned."

Eleanor smiled from the elevated platform.

"The Mirror Program evolved."

"We stopped replacing adults."

"Children are far easier."

She folded her hands behind her back.

"They grow into the lives we choose."

The second little boy looked terrified.

Tears rolled silently down his cheeks.

He pressed both tiny hands against the glass.

"Daddy..."

The word echoed through the chamber.

Grace closed her eyes.

"My God..."

The real Noah tightened his grip on my hand.

He looked at the other child.

Then quietly asked,

"Dad..."

"Why does he look like me?"

I knelt beside him.

"I don't know."

But deep inside...

I already suspected.

Colonel Sullivan aimed his rifle toward Eleanor.

"This ends now."

Before he could fire—

Red laser sights appeared across his chest.

More than twenty.

Hidden snipers.

Every balcony.

Every catwalk.

Every shadow.

Eleanor smiled.

"I expected that."

The Colonel slowly lowered his weapon.

The countdown continued.

04:11

Eleanor looked directly at me.

"Choose."

"Save Emily..."

"...or identify your son."

"If you're wrong..."

"You lose both."

Silence.

Everyone looked at me.

Waiting.

I slowly stood.

Then...

I smiled.

Eleanor frowned.

"You think this is amusing?"

"No."

"I think you've spent your whole life misunderstanding family."

She tilted her head.

"Explain."

I looked toward both boys.

"They look identical."

"You copied his DNA."

"His voice."

"His face."

"You even copied the scar on his knee."

I nodded slowly.

"You copied everything..."

"...except one thing."

The room fell silent.

Eleanor's smile faded.

I walked toward both children.

Neither moved.

I crouched until I was eye level with them.

Then I softly asked,

"Noah..."

"Can you tell me the last story Mommy ever told you?"

The boy inside the glass chamber answered immediately.

"The butterfly."

"She said butterflies always find their way home."

Perfect.

Word for word.

Exactly what Emily's recordings had said.

Too perfect.

I turned toward my Noah.

He frowned.

Thinking.

Then quietly smiled.

"No..."

He looked embarrassed.

"I fell asleep."

"I never heard the ending."

Grace suddenly began crying.

I remembered.

Three years ago.

Emily had been reading Noah a bedtime story.

Halfway through...

He had fallen asleep in her lap.

She laughed softly and carried him to bed.

He had never heard the ending.

No recording.

No surveillance camera.

No file.

No psychologist could have known that.

Only our family.

I stood.

Without hesitation...

I walked to my son.

Placed my hands on his shoulders.

And kissed his forehead.

"I found you."

Noah smiled through tears.

"I knew you would."

The other little boy lowered his head.

He whispered,

"I'm sorry."

My heart broke.

He wasn't my son.

He was another victim.

Eleanor stared at us.

For the first time...

She looked genuinely shocked.

"Impossible."

I looked directly into her eyes.

"You can duplicate memories."

"You can train behavior."

"But you can't recreate love."

The countdown reached—

02:59

Thomas's voice suddenly echoed through the chamber.

"Daniel!"

Everyone turned.

The maintenance blast doors exploded inward.

Thomas staggered inside covered in dust and blood.

Behind him...

More than thirty FBI tactical operators stormed Obsidian.

Colonel Sullivan smiled.

"I knew you'd survive."

Thomas grinned weakly.

"Told you..."

"...not to leave without me."

Gunfire erupted.

Federal agents exchanged fire with Eleanor's private guards.

The underground chamber became chaos.

Glass shattered.

Alarms screamed.

Emergency sprinklers activated.

Water poured from the ceiling.

Grace rushed toward Emily's life-support controls.

"I can disconnect her!"

Hannah grabbed her arm.

"No!"

"Why?"

"If you remove her incorrectly..."

"...she'll die."

Thomas threw me a compact electronic device.

"What is this?"

"Victor gave it to me."

"He what?"

"He wanted Eleanor stopped."

I looked down.

A biometric override key.

Stamped with one word.

OBSIDIAN

The countdown.

02:07

Colonel Sullivan covered us with rifle fire.

"Daniel!"

"Use it!"

I sprinted toward Emily's capsule.

Bullets shattered glass around me.

Eleanor calmly watched from above.

"You still don't understand."

She pressed another button.

Every capsule inside Obsidian unlocked simultaneously.

Hundreds of sleeping Mirrors slowly opened their eyes.

One after another.

Children.

Adults.

Teenagers.

Conditioned soldiers.

They stepped silently from their chambers.

Not confused.

Not frightened.

Waiting.

Eleanor smiled.

"My family..."

"...is much larger than yours."

The first Mirror began walking toward Noah.

Then another.

Then dozens more.

Emily's oxygen timer reached—
