CHAPTER 5 — THE SAFE-DEPOSIT BOX

The explosion rattled every window in the mansion.

Glass shattered across the marble floor.

Noah screamed.

Without thinking, I pulled him into my arms while Grace covered both of us with her body.

Thomas was already moving.

"Everyone away from the windows!"

Another blast echoed from the front gate.

The security monitors flickered back to life.

Smoke billowed through the entrance as flames swallowed one of the guard booths.

Three black SUVs smashed through the twisted iron gates.

Their headlights cut through the smoke like hunting predators.

Every vehicle carried the same silver emblem.

A black serpent wrapped around a sword.

Blackstone.

"They're here," Thomas said quietly.

"They're not hiding anymore."

The radio exploded with frantic voices.

"North team down!"

"They have military weapons!"

"Need backup!"

Static swallowed the rest.

Thomas turned to his guards.

"Protect Mr. Ashford and the child."

One guard hesitated.

"What about you?"

Thomas calmly loaded another magazine into his pistol.

"I'll slow them down."

Grace grabbed my sleeve.

"We have to leave."

"No."

I looked at Emily's note in my hand.

"The safe-deposit box."

Thomas nodded immediately.

"They know about it."

"How?"

"Because someone inside this family told them."

Victoria lowered her head.

"My father."

Everyone looked at her.

She corrected herself.

"I mean..."

"Victor."

She swallowed hard.

"He always believed Emily hid evidence."

"What kind of evidence?"

"I never knew."

"You expect us to believe that?"

She looked at Noah.

"I wasn't important enough."

The estate shook again.

This time much closer.

Thomas looked toward the security cameras.

"They're not attacking the house."

"What?"

"They're surrounding it."

He enlarged one monitor.

Sixteen armed men.

Perfect formation.

Military discipline.

Not criminals.

Professionals.

"They're waiting."

"For what?"

Thomas didn't answer immediately.

Then he whispered,

"Their commander."

Almost on cue...

A seventeenth vehicle rolled through the burning gates.

Unlike the others...

It wasn't an SUV.

It was a black Rolls-Royce.

Every armed operative stepped aside as it slowly approached the mansion.

The driver's door opened.

Victor Hale stepped out.

Tailored black suit.

Silver tie.

The serpent tattoo curled beneath his collar.

He wasn't carrying a weapon.

He didn't need one.

Victor looked directly into the security camera.

Then...

He smiled.

It wasn't arrogance.

It was certainty.

He knew exactly where we were watching from.

He slowly raised one hand.

Three fingers.

Then two.

Then one.

Thomas immediately understood.

"He's counting down."

"To what?"

The mansion lights went out again.

This time permanently.

The backup generators died.

The monitors turned black.

Silence.

Only the distant crackle of fire remained.

A heavy knocking echoed through the front door.

Three slow knocks.

No more.

No less.

No one moved.

Then Victor's voice came through the estate's intercom.

Calm.

Almost friendly.

"Daniel."

The sound echoed through every hallway.

"I know you're listening."

I clenched my fists.

"Open the door."

"I'd rather not."

Victor chuckled.

"Emily always was stubborn."

Grace's face hardened.

"Don't answer him."

But Victor continued.

"I don't want the boy."

I froze.

"I don't want your money."

Thomas looked at me.

"He's lying."

Victor spoke again.

"I only want one thing."

Silence filled the mansion.

Then...

"The key."

Noah looked up at me.

"Dad..."

"What is it?"

He hesitated.

"I've seen him before."

"I know."

"No..."

His little face turned pale.

"Not here."

My heart skipped.

"Where?"

"The hospital."

Every adult in the room froze.

Grace slowly knelt beside him.

"Honey..."

"Mommy was sleeping."

He pointed toward the front door.

"He was standing outside."

"When?"

"The day..."

His tiny voice broke.

"...before Mommy never came home."

I felt the world tilt beneath me.

Emily hadn't imagined the danger.

Victor had been there.

Watching.

Waiting.

Thomas suddenly opened another hidden compartment inside the security desk.

He removed a faded leather folder.

"I hoped we'd never need this."

"What is it?"

"Your father gave it to me."

I stared at him.

"When?"

"The day after Emily's funeral."

He handed it to me.

"For emergencies only."

I slowly opened it.

Inside...

A photograph.

My father.

Victor Hale.

Marcus.

Standing beside another man.

Older.

Elegant.

White hair.

Expensive suit.

The four men were shaking hands inside a corporate boardroom.

Across the bottom of the photograph...

One handwritten caption.

Founding Partners — Blackstone Risk Management.

The date...

Twenty-two years earlier.

My hands began trembling.

"My father..."

Thomas nodded.

"He helped create Blackstone."

Victoria gasped.

"No..."

She stared at the photograph.

"My brother told me Blackstone worked for your father."

Thomas slowly shook his head.

"No."

"They worked together."

My entire childhood flashed before my eyes.

Every business trip.

Every mysterious phone call.

Every time Father disappeared for weeks claiming he was negotiating overseas.

None of it made sense then.

Now...

Everything did.

The intercom clicked again.

Victor's voice returned.

"I've been very patient, Daniel."

He sounded almost disappointed.

"But patience has limits."

Then something unexpected happened.

A second voice came over the intercom.

Deep.

Older.

A voice I had heard my entire life.

"Daniel."

Every muscle in my body locked.

It couldn't be.

No.

Not possible.

My father's voice.

Perfectly calm.

"My son."

The room fell silent.

"I warned Emily not to interfere."

My blood turned cold.

"You should have listened to me instead of her."

Noah buried his face against Grace.

Victoria began crying again.

Thomas closed his eyes.

He had known.

At least part of it.

Then my father spoke the words that shattered the last piece of the life I thought I understood.

"Open the door."

"Or I'll tell Noah..."

"...who really caused his mother's death."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

I looked down at my son.

His tiny fingers clung tightly to my jacket.

Then he whispered something so softly that only I could hear.

"Dad..."

"I remember the night Mommy died."

My heart stopped.

"What do you remember?"

Noah slowly looked into my eyes.

May you like

Tears rolled down his cheeks.

"I saw Grandpa."
