CHAPTER 10 — THE TEDDY BEAR'S SECRET

Victor's pistol never wavered.
Its black barrel pointed directly at Noah's chest.
The room froze.
No one breathed.
No one dared move.
Only the distant sound of helicopter blades echoed above the mansion.
Noah clutched his faded brown teddy bear tighter against his small body.
The stuffed toy was worn with age.
One button eye had been replaced years ago.
Its fur had faded from golden brown to pale tan after countless nights tucked beneath his arm.
Emily had sewn it herself before Noah was born.
He had never slept without it.
Victor smiled.
"There it is."
Grace instinctively stepped in front of Noah.
"You'll have to kill me first."
Victor shrugged.
"I don't mind."
Thomas slowly shifted his weight.
Waiting.
Calculating.
Looking for an opening.
There wasn't one.
Eight Blackstone rifles remained trained on us.
My father suddenly spoke.
"Victor."
Victor didn't look away from Noah.
"What?"
"If you kill the boy..."
"...the Board will never forgive you."
Victor laughed.
"The Board already knows where the key is."
Richard frowned.
"Then why is he still alive?"
Victor's smile widened.
"Because I don't need the boy."
"I need what he's carrying."
I slowly crouched beside Noah.
"It's okay."
His tiny hands trembled violently.
"Dad..."
"I'm scared."
"I know."
He buried his face against my shoulder.
"I don't want Mommy's bear to get hurt."
The words broke something inside me.
Even now...
He wasn't afraid for himself.
He was afraid of losing the last gift his mother had ever made for him.
Grace gently stroked his hair.
"Noah."
She smiled through her tears.
"Can I hold Teddy for just one second?"
He hesitated.
Then slowly nodded.
Grace accepted the bear with extraordinary care.
Almost reverently.
Victor took one step forward.
"Good."
"Now cut it open."
Grace looked directly into his eyes.
"No."
Victor sighed.
"You people never make things easy."
He nodded toward one of his operatives.
The soldier raised his rifle.
A laser dot settled on Grace's forehead.
Noah screamed.
"No!"
Before anyone could react—
Thomas moved.
With astonishing speed, he hurled a heavy brass desk lamp across the room.
The lamp smashed into the rifle barrel.
The shot fired harmlessly into the ceiling.
Chaos erupted again.
Gunfire exploded through the office.
Thomas tackled Grace and Noah behind the overturned desk.
I dragged Victoria with me as bullets shattered the bookshelves.
My father dove behind the fireplace.
Victor disappeared into the smoke.
The mansion became a battlefield.
Another explosion rocked the estate.
The ceiling cracked.
Chunks of plaster crashed onto the marble floor.
One of the chandeliers broke free.
It slammed into two Blackstone operatives.
The entire room filled with dust.
Visibility dropped to almost nothing.
Through the smoke...
I heard Noah crying.
"Dad!"
"I'm here!"
I crawled toward his voice.
My hands searched blindly through broken glass.
Finally...
I felt his tiny fingers.
I pulled him into my arms.
Grace was beside him.
Still holding the teddy bear.
Unharmed.
Thomas shouted from somewhere across the room.
"Daniel!"
"They're falling back!"
Victor's voice echoed through the smoke.
"Move!"
One by one, Blackstone operatives began retreating.
Not because they were losing.
Because something had changed.
Then we heard it.
Police sirens.
Dozens of them.
Growing louder.
Closer.
Thomas smiled for the first time all night.
"My message got through."
Victor cursed.
"You called federal authorities?"
Thomas nodded.
"Three hours ago."
Victor stared.
"You knew."
"I knew someone inside Blackstone would warn you."
"So I never called local police."
"I called Washington."
Within seconds...
Powerful spotlights illuminated the estate.
Helicopters circled overhead.
Not Blackstone helicopters.
Government helicopters.
The loudspeaker boomed across the grounds.
"Federal agents! Drop your weapons immediately!"
Victor looked toward Richard.
"This is your fault."
Richard slowly stood.
"No."
"It's yours."
Victor laughed bitterly.
"You finally found a conscience?"
"I finally found my grandson."
For the first time...
Richard looked at Noah.
Not as an heir.
Not as an Ashford.
As a frightened little boy.
Real regret filled his eyes.
Victor raised his pistol toward Richard.
"You've become useless."
Before he could fire—
A red laser sight appeared on Victor's chest.
Then another.
Then another.
More than twenty.
Every federal sniper had him covered.
Victor slowly smiled.
"So..."
"They finally came."
The front doors burst open.
FBI tactical agents flooded into the mansion.
Black uniforms.
Night-vision helmets.
Disciplined precision.
Within seconds they secured every entrance.
Blackstone operatives surrendered one after another.
Victor remained standing.
Perfectly calm.
An older FBI commander stepped forward.
"Victor Hale."
"You're under arrest."
Victor laughed.
"You think this ends tonight?"
The commander didn't answer.
He simply nodded toward two agents.
Victor was handcuffed.
But his smile never disappeared.
As agents searched the room, Grace finally examined the teddy bear.
She carefully turned it over.
Her fingers stopped on one seam near the back.
The stitching was different.
Newer.
Emily's careful hand.
Grace looked at me.
"Daniel..."
"I found it."
She slowly removed a tiny silver seam ripper from an evidence kit handed to her by an FBI technician.
With extraordinary care...
She opened only a few stitches.
Something metallic slid gently into her hand.
Not a key.
A tiny gold capsule.
No larger than a lipstick tube.
Thomas stared.
"A micro-storage capsule."
Grace twisted it open.
Inside...
Was an old-fashioned microSD memory card.
Victor's smile vanished.
For the first time that night...
He looked afraid.
"No..."
he whispered.
"She didn't..."
Thomas smiled quietly.
"Emily never trusted banks."
Grace looked at the tiny card resting in her palm.
"So the safe-deposit box..."
Thomas nodded.
"Was a decoy."
I suddenly understood.
Emily had anticipated everything.
She knew the bank would be searched.
She knew Blackstone would follow the paper trail.
So she hid the real evidence...
Inside the one thing no one would ever dare destroy.
Her little son's teddy bear.
An FBI forensic technician carefully inserted the memory card into a secure encrypted reader.
One folder appeared.
Only one.
Its title was simple.
FOR NOAH
I clicked it open.
Instead of financial records...
A new video filled the screen.
Emily appeared.
Alive.
Smiling gently.
As though she knew this day would eventually come.
She looked directly into the camera.
Then she spoke the words that changed everything.
"Daniel... if Noah is old enough to watch this with you... it means I failed to come home."
She paused, fighting back tears.
Then her expression became determined.
"Everything you've discovered so far is only the beginning."
She slowly lifted a photograph toward the camera.
My heart stopped.
It wasn't Victor.
It wasn't Marcus.
It wasn't my father.
It was someone I had never seen before.
An elegant elderly woman standing in front of the United States Capitol.
May you like
On the back of the photograph, Emily had written only three words:
She runs everything.
