CHAPTER 17 — OBSIDIAN

"Danny..."
The voice was barely louder than a whisper.
Weak.
Broken.
Yet unmistakable.
Every memory I had spent three years trying to preserve came rushing back at once.
Emily.
Not a recording.
Not a Mirror.
Not another deception.
She was alive.
For one impossible heartbeat, the world around me disappeared.
The alarms.
The flashing red lights.
The collapsing bunker.
None of it mattered.
She had called my name.
The way only she ever had.
The entire chamber shook violently.
Dust rained from the concrete ceiling.
The computerized warning echoed again.
Phoenix Protocol active.
Facility self-destruction in twenty-two minutes.
Colonel Sullivan grabbed my shoulder.
"Daniel!"
His voice snapped me back.
"We're running out of time."
Hannah hurried to the control terminal.
"I know where Obsidian is."
Thomas's absence suddenly felt heavier than ever.
He should have been here.
He would have already found another entrance.
Instead...
It was up to us.
Hannah enlarged the underground map.
Beneath Omega appeared a circular structure unlike anything else.
No hallways.
No laboratories.
Only one enormous chamber connected by a single elevator shaft.
Its name glowed crimson.
OBSIDIAN CORE
Grace frowned.
"Only one entrance?"
Hannah nodded.
"And one exit."
Victoria whispered,
"It's a trap."
Colonel Sullivan studied the blueprint.
"No."
He pointed toward an old maintenance conduit running beside the elevator.
"There's another way."
Hannah looked surprised.
"I never knew about that."
"It wasn't designed for people."
The Colonel smiled faintly.
"It was designed for engineers."
Another explosion echoed somewhere above.
The lights flickered.
The ventilation system shut down.
Smoke slowly drifted through the corridors.
Grace instinctively pulled Noah closer.
The little boy buried his face against her shoulder.
"Dad..."
His tiny voice trembled.
"Is Mommy really here?"
I knelt beside him.
I placed both hands gently on his shoulders.
"Yes."
He searched my face.
"You promise?"
This time...
There was no hesitation.
"I promise."
Noah slowly unzipped his little jacket.
From inside, he carefully removed Emily's butterfly necklace.
The one Hannah had returned.
"Dad..."
"Mom told me butterflies always find their way home."
I smiled through tears.
"They do."
He carefully placed the necklace into my hand.
"So she knows we're coming."
We moved quickly.
The maintenance tunnel was narrow.
Barely wide enough to crawl through.
Ancient pipes surrounded us.
Saltwater leaked through cracked walls.
The deeper we descended...
The warmer the air became.
Machines.
Power generators.
Life-support systems.
Obsidian was still operating.
Suddenly—
Hannah stopped.
She raised one trembling hand.
"Listen."
Everyone froze.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
Coming toward us.
Not one person.
Several.
The Colonel quietly switched off his flashlight.
Darkness swallowed the tunnel.
The footsteps grew closer.
Voices echoed.
"We've secured Level Omega."
Another answered,
"Eleanor wants the Ashford boy alive."
My blood froze.
"They know Noah is here."
The soldiers passed only a few feet away on the opposite side of a ventilation grate.
Black tactical uniforms.
Silver Aster insignia.
Advanced rifles.
Night-vision goggles.
Not Blackstone.
Not mercenaries.
Private military.
One operative paused.
"I heard something."
Everyone held their breath.
Noah squeezed my hand.
Grace silently covered his mouth to stop even the sound of breathing.
The soldier slowly raised his rifle toward the ventilation grate.
Then—
A violent explosion rocked the bunker.
The lights failed completely.
Emergency power activated.
The soldiers rushed away.
We were safe.
For now.
Fifteen minutes remained.
The maintenance tunnel finally ended beneath a massive steel platform.
Above us stood the Obsidian elevator.
Its armored doors were nearly twelve inches thick.
Impossible to breach.
Unless...
The Colonel examined the hydraulic system.
Then smiled.
"They forgot one thing."
"What?"
"Maintenance access."
He removed a small explosive charge from his vest.
"This won't destroy the elevator."
"It'll stop it."
Thirty seconds later—
The shaped charge detonated.
A muffled blast echoed through the shaft.
The elevator shuddered.
Then stopped halfway between levels.
Exactly as Sullivan had planned.
He pointed upward.
"Ladder."
A narrow emergency ladder became visible inside the shaft.
"We climb."
One by one...
We ascended.
The heat intensified.
Steam filled the shaft.
Below us, seawater had begun flooding the lower tunnels.
Phoenix Protocol wasn't simply destroying evidence.
It was drowning the entire facility.
At the top...
A maintenance hatch opened silently.
We emerged inside Obsidian.
No one spoke.
The room before us stole every breath.
It wasn't a laboratory.
It was a cathedral of technology.
Towering glass cylinders lined both walls.
Each contained a sleeping human.
Men.
Women.
Teenagers.
Children.
Hundreds of them.
Floating peacefully inside preservation fluid.
Every capsule bore a photograph.
Every photograph belonged to someone powerful.
Politicians.
Judges.
Military officers.
Scientists.
Business leaders.
Grace stared in horror.
"They're replacing people..."
Hannah nodded.
"These are the next generation of Mirrors."
Victoria quietly whispered,
"My God..."
At the center of the chamber stood one capsule elevated above all the others.
Protected by bulletproof glass.
Connected to a complex life-support system.
The butterfly necklace rested against the woman inside.
Emily.
Her eyes were closed.
Her heartbeat pulsed softly across a nearby monitor.
Heart Rate: 42
Status: Stable
She was alive.
"Danny..."
The whisper came again.
This time...
Not through a speaker.
Emily's fingers moved.
Only slightly.
But enough.
She was conscious.
Barely.
I ran toward the capsule.
"Emily!"
Before I reached her—
A calm voice echoed throughout Obsidian.
"So predictable."
Every screen in the chamber illuminated simultaneously.
Eleanor Whitmore appeared.
Not on video.
She stepped from the shadows above the control platform.
Elegant.
Composed.
Wearing a white suit untouched by dust or smoke.
She applauded slowly.
"Congratulations."
"You found her."
Twenty armed guards emerged from hidden doors surrounding the chamber.
Every rifle pointed directly at us.
Eleanor smiled warmly.
"As promised..."
"Your wife is alive."
She looked down at Emily's capsule.
Then back at me.
"But now..."
She gently pressed a small silver remote in her hand.
A timer appeared above Emily's life-support system.
05:00
Grace gasped.
"What did you do?"
Eleanor answered without emotion.
"I disconnected the primary oxygen system."
The countdown began.
04:59
She smiled.
"You may save your wife..."
"...or save your son."
Only then did I notice another glass chamber slowly rising behind her.
Inside...
Noah.
Somehow.
No—
It wasn't Noah.
It was another little boy.
The same face.
The same eyes.
The same age.
Another Mirror.
Eleanor looked directly at me.
"Tell me, Daniel..."
May you like
"If you can only save one..."
"How will you know which child is truly yours?"
