CHAPTER 15 — THE PRICE OF ONE LIFE

The lighthouse fell silent.
Only the crashing waves and the howl of the wind filled the darkness.
No one moved.
No one dared breathe.
Eleanor Whitmore's final words echoed through the old radio.
"Kill Subject Twelve... and I'll allow your wife to live."
The transmission ended with a burst of static.
Then...
Nothing.
Subject Twelve slowly stepped backward.
She didn't look surprised.
She looked resigned.
"They always do this."
Grace frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"They never force the victim to choose."
"They force the people who love them."
She lowered her eyes.
"It's how they break families."
I looked at her.
"No one is killing you."
She gave me a sad smile.
"You don't understand."
"If Emily is alive..."
"She'll die because of me."
I shook my head.
"No."
"Because of Eleanor."
Colonel Sullivan immediately activated a secure satellite radio.
"Falcon Command."
No response.
He tried another encrypted frequency.
Only static.
Thomas checked his phone.
"No signal."
Grace frowned.
"They're jamming us."
The Colonel nodded.
"Military-grade signal suppression."
"We're completely isolated."
Outside...
The engines grew louder.
Black tactical boats emerged from the storm one after another.
Not six.
Nine.
Each carried heavily armed operatives dressed entirely in black.
No insignia.
No lights.
No voices.
Only discipline.
Thomas counted quickly.
"Forty..."
"Maybe fifty."
The Colonel quietly corrected him.
"More."
He pointed toward the cliffs.
Dark figures appeared on the rocks above the lighthouse.
Snipers.
The escape routes were gone.
Victoria looked toward the hidden tunnel beneath the lighthouse.
"They've surrounded every entrance."
Subject Twelve shook her head.
"Not every entrance."
She knelt beside the stone fireplace.
Running her fingers across the ancient brickwork.
After a moment...
She pressed one loose stone.
A deep metallic click echoed beneath the floor.
The fireplace slowly rotated.
Revealing a narrow spiral staircase descending into darkness.
Thomas stared.
"This wasn't on Emily's map."
Subject Twelve nodded.
"Because Emily never found it."
"My trainer did."
Colonel Sullivan raised an eyebrow.
"You've known about this all along?"
"I wasn't sure it still existed."
She looked down the staircase.
"It leads beneath the harbor."
"Eventually..."
"...to Omega."
The first gunshots shattered the lighthouse windows.
Glass exploded inward.
Everyone instinctively dropped to the floor.
Blackstone wasn't attacking.
Neither was the FBI.
These shooters were different.
Professional.
Silent.
Precise.
The Board had sent its own execution team.
Thomas returned fire.
Two sharp shots.
One sniper disappeared from the cliff.
The Colonel covered the rear entrance.
"Move!"
Grace picked up Noah, who had finally awakened.
The frightened boy clung tightly to his teddy bear.
"Dad..."
His tiny voice shook.
"Where are we going?"
I knelt beside him.
"To bring Mommy home."
He looked into my eyes.
"Really?"
For the first time in three years...
I answered without hesitation.
"Yes."
Subject Twelve disappeared into the hidden passage first.
Victoria followed.
Grace carried Noah behind her.
The Colonel entered next.
Thomas motioned for me to go.
"I'll cover the entrance."
"No."
"We stay together."
He smiled faintly.
"You sound like your mother."
Before I could answer—
He slammed the emergency release.
The stone fireplace rotated shut between us.
I lunged forward.
"Thomas!"
His voice echoed faintly through the stone.
"Get Noah to Emily."
Three gunshots rang out above us.
Then...
Silence.
The hidden tunnel was ancient.
Moisture dripped from the ceiling.
Saltwater seeped through cracked stone walls.
Old naval pipes lined the corridor.
The air smelled of rust and seawater.
Victoria whispered,
"This place is older than Blackstone."
Subject Twelve nodded.
"It was built during World War II."
After nearly fifteen minutes...
The tunnel widened into an abandoned underground railway.
Old steel tracks disappeared into darkness.
A single rusted maintenance cart rested beside the platform.
The Colonel examined it.
"It still works."
Subject Twelve nodded.
"Battery powered."
"We'll reach Omega in ten minutes."
As the cart rolled deeper underground...
Noah quietly reached into his pocket.
"Dad."
"What is it?"
He handed me a tiny folded piece of paper.
"I found this inside Teddy."
Everyone stared.
"I thought we already checked."
"So did I."
The paper was no larger than a postage stamp.
Folded dozens of times.
Emily's handwriting.
Only one sentence.
Never trust the first reunion.
Silence.
Grace frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Before anyone answered—
Subject Twelve suddenly froze.
Her breathing stopped.
"No..."
She whispered.
Victoria looked at her.
"What?"
"The woman."
"What woman?"
"The one Eleanor promised."
The maintenance cart rounded a sharp bend.
A huge steel blast door stood ahead.
Marked in faded white letters:
SUBLEVEL OMEGA
The door was already open.
Fresh footprints covered the dusty floor.
Someone had entered only minutes earlier.
The Colonel slowly raised his rifle.
"They're waiting."
Subject Twelve shook her head.
"No."
"They've already begun."
They stepped through the massive doorway.
Beyond it stretched an enormous underground chamber.
Rows of abandoned hospital beds.
Medical laboratories.
Glass observation rooms.
Hundreds of empty file cabinets.
It looked less like a prison...
And more like a city hidden beneath the earth.
At the center stood one illuminated operating room.
Inside...
A woman sat quietly in a chair.
Her hands folded in her lap.
Long dark hair.
Pale skin.
Butterfly necklace around her neck.
She slowly turned as they entered.
My heart nearly stopped.
"Emily..."
She smiled.
Exactly the way Emily always had.
Every instinct in my body screamed to run to her.
Then I remembered the note hidden inside Noah's teddy bear.
Never trust the first reunion.
I stopped.
The woman tilted her head.
Her smile never changed.
Then she spoke.
"Daniel..."
"I knew you'd come."
But one tiny detail betrayed her.
Emily always called me Danny when we were alone.
She had never—
Not once—
Called me Daniel.
The smile on the woman's face slowly widened.
May you like
She realized...
I had noticed.
