CHAPTER 14 — THE WOMAN WHO WORE EMILY'S FACE

Lightning split the sky.
For a brief instant, the lighthouse stood illuminated against the raging sea.
The woman holding the lantern remained perfectly still.
She looked exactly like Emily.
The same dark hair.
The same gentle eyes.
The same calm expression that had greeted me every morning for ten years.
My heart stopped.
"Emily..."
The word escaped before I realized I had spoken.
Beside me, Grace gasped.
Thomas lowered his rifle.
Even Colonel Sullivan seemed frozen.
Only Victoria whispered,
"No..."
The fishing boat drifted silently toward the rocky pier.
The woman never waved.
Never smiled.
She simply watched us approach.
The closer we came...
The more impossible it became.
Every feature.
Every movement.
Every tiny habit.
She even tilted her head the way Emily always did when she was worried.
For one impossible second...
Hope overwhelmed reason.
As soon as the boat touched the dock, I jumped ashore.
Rain soaked my clothes instantly.
I walked toward her.
Slowly.
Afraid that moving too quickly would shatter the illusion.
She watched me without fear.
Without recognition.
When I stopped only a few feet away...
She quietly spoke.
"I'm sorry."
The voice...
Wasn't Emily's.
Close.
Painfully close.
But different.
Older.
More guarded.
My chest tightened.
"Who are you?"
She lowered the lantern.
"My name..."
She hesitated.
"I don't know anymore."
Silence filled the lighthouse.
Colonel Sullivan stepped forward.
"Identify yourself."
She looked at him.
"They called me Subject Twelve."
Victoria's face turned white.
"No..."
She stumbled backward.
"They're real."
Thomas frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
Victoria looked at me with tears in her eyes.
"The Mirrors."
The woman nodded.
"That's what Blackstone called us."
Thomas slowly lowered his weapon.
"Explain."
The woman took a deep breath.
"Whenever the Board targeted someone important..."
"They created a replacement."
Grace stared.
"A replacement?"
The woman nodded.
"They studied photographs."
"Voice recordings."
"Medical files."
"Behavior."
"They trained us..."
"...to become someone else."
No one spoke.
The storm outside pounded against the lighthouse windows.
The woman looked at me with quiet sadness.
"I spent three years learning how to become Emily Ashford."
Every word struck like a hammer.
"What?"
"They wanted me ready..."
"...in case Emily disappeared."
Victoria quietly finished the sentence.
"So Daniel would never know."
The woman nodded.
Colonel Sullivan whispered,
"My God..."
I struggled to breathe.
"So..."
"You aren't Emily."
"No."
"You never met her?"
"I did."
"When?"
"Twice."
Her eyes became distant.
"The second time..."
"...she saved my life."
Thomas looked confused.
"Emily knew about you?"
The woman nodded.
"She found the Mirror Program."
"Instead of exposing us..."
"She tried to rescue us."
Victoria began crying again.
"Just like me."
The woman smiled sadly.
"Emily believed nobody was born evil."
"Only broken."
She reached into the pocket of her raincoat.
Everyone instinctively tensed.
Instead of a weapon...
She produced a small silver pendant.
I recognized it instantly.
Emily's butterfly necklace.
The one she wore every anniversary.
The one never found after her death.
My hands trembled.
"Where did you get that?"
The woman's eyes filled with tears.
"Emily gave it to me."
Flashback...
"It was cold underground."
"They had locked me inside Observation Room Seven."
"I hadn't seen sunlight for almost eleven months."
"Then..."
"Emily opened the door."
The woman's voice grew steadier as she remembered.
"I thought she worked for Blackstone."
"Instead..."
"She handed me a sandwich."
"And this necklace."
Emily's voice echoed through her memory.
"If you ever escape..."
"Find Daniel."
"He'll believe you."
The woman carefully placed the butterfly pendant into my hand.
"I promised her."
I couldn't speak.
I simply closed my fingers around the necklace.
It was warm.
As though Emily had only just taken it off.
Colonel Sullivan interrupted quietly.
"Did Emily survive?"
The woman looked toward the storm.
For a long time...
She didn't answer.
Finally...
She whispered,
"When I saw her last..."
"...she was alive."
Hope exploded inside me.
"What?"
Thomas grabbed her shoulders.
"Tell us."
She nodded slowly.
"Eleanor ordered Emily transferred to Omega."
"Not executed."
"Why?"
"Because Emily refused to tell them where Ledger Thirteen was hidden."
Grace stepped closer.
"So she survived the hospital."
"Yes."
"She survived Fort Sterling."
"Yes."
"Then what happened?"
The woman's eyes filled with guilt.
"I don't know."
"I escaped that night."
"Emily stayed behind..."
"...so I could get out."
Silence.
Victoria covered her mouth.
"She sacrificed herself."
The woman nodded.
"Again."
Colonel Sullivan unfolded the blueprint.
"If Emily reached Omega..."
"She may have left another clue."
The woman stepped toward the table.
Her finger landed on one forgotten corridor.
Nobody had noticed it before.
"This tunnel."
Thomas frowned.
"It isn't on our blueprint."
"It wouldn't be."
"Why?"
"Emily drew it herself."
The woman removed another folded page from inside her jacket.
A hand-drawn map.
Old.
Water damaged.
Signed in the corner.
Emily Ashford.
She had mapped an escape tunnel beneath Omega.
A tunnel leading...
Not out of Fort Sterling.
But deeper beneath it.
Toward a chamber marked only with one handwritten word.
VAULT.
Suddenly—
The lighthouse lights went dark.
Every bulb exploded simultaneously.
The room fell into complete darkness.
Outside...
Engines echoed across the water.
Not one.
Not two.
At least six.
Colonel Sullivan rushed to the window.
Black tactical boats were cutting through the storm at full speed.
No lights.
No identification.
Only black flags bearing a silver aster flower.
The Board had found them.
Then the lighthouse radio crackled to life.
A calm female voice echoed through the darkness.
Elegant.
Cold.
Completely composed.
"Daniel..."
"I hoped you would bring the Mirror."
The woman beside me froze.
The voice continued.
"You've made my work much easier."
A pause.
Then the final sentence chilled everyone in the room.
"Kill Subject Twelve."
"And I'll allow your wife to live."
Silence.
My heart nearly stopped.
May you like
Did that mean—
Emily was still alive?
